Glad it was helpful! ...Get ready for Raglan Sleeve fit adjustments Part 2 this week on Subscriber Q & A! I'm excited to share these body specific pattern adjustments ... I'm working on pants for my daughter right now. I "knew" I should have adjusted her pattern for a body specific issue she has (The front of her body has significantly more depth than the back of her body)... I didn't balance the crotch extensions to agree with her shape and now I don't have enough crotch to wrap around her! ....The interesting thing is from the way her muslin looks, I would have added to her back crotch extension and inseam... But I think the issue is that the front is too short and it's pulling the back crotch forward causing the problem in the back.... Stay tuned for it body specific adjustment coming soon! Hi Jen. Another great video and perfect timing for me, as I'm trying to modify one of my most-used patterns (for fleece tunic with raglan sleeves). I really appreciate your wonderful fit series! Recently I noticed that my tunics were too tight under the arms, but when I started paying detailed attention, it was just the left side that was a problem. I now know my left arm and shoulder sit 1/2 inch lower than my right (after trying to fit overalls with straps and enlisting my husband to help me measure heights at the tips of both shoulders). My question is how to modify a raglan sleeve to accommodate this. For my regular-sleeve turtlenecks (worn under the fleece tunics), I just lowered the outside of the shoulder 1/2" to make a steeper shoulder seam slope and respositioned the entire armscythe to be 1/2" lower (with no change to the regular sleeve). Of course the jersey fabric is 4-way stretch and a lot of it, whereas the fleece is only 2-way stretch and a lot less than jersey stretch, so more of a challenge. For the raglan sleeve of my fleece tunic pattern, I lowered the left armhole and was trying to take out some from where the shoulder tip hits the raglan sleeve, but everything I tried made the neckline way bigger or way smaller. My main concern is not flaring up my neck (long-standing injury making any kind of pressure on neck or shoulders unbearable), so I didn't want to mess with the neckline. I eventually gave up and just lowered the armhole 1/2" on the left sleeve (both front and back) and on the left side of front and back bodice pieces. I know this makes the overall armhole and sleeve bigger on the left, but I don't try to closely fit anything these days because it ends up pulling on my neck. Can you think of a better way to do this alteration for the raglan sleeve for someone with one shoulder lower than the other like me? Thanks, Antonia

Always such good info Jen! My husband’s raglans tip up at the center hem, so I know it needs more ‘cap’ height. I don’t know how to do this with a raglan though….its about an inch. Fit is great everywhere else. Do you have a video on this? Thanks in advance!

Another excellent video, Jen. Is there any chance you could use a clip on microphone at all? I had my laptop speakers at 100% and youTube at 100% and I could still barely hear you at times. It was especially difficult when my husband rustled his chip packet ;)

Thank you for this information - is there a maximum amount you should take and replace when you are adjusting for a raglan top that pulls down at the back?

My pleasure... The amount you should take and replace really depends on how much you need to balance the front/back shoulder. To get a good idea of how much.. Start by pinning out the excess. Then remove that much an add a similar amount. Hope this helps! Thanks for fitting along with me

Hi Jen, I’ve just come back to review this video because I do have a fitting problem with a toile made up from a commercial pattern. I have narrow shoulders and back and on a standard set in sleeve bodice, often reduce the shoulder to shoulder width by about one inch plus sometimes add a centre back seam to take out bulk from just below my shoulders. I’ve not tried a raglan sleeve before and so am at a loss to know the equivalent way of tackling this issue - the toile just looks huge across the shoulders; fabric is pooling to about 1 to 11/2 inches on each side of upper arm. The back is too wide. The seam joining the sleeve to the body doesn’t run alongside or on the “body” side but across my arm, if that makes sense. How do I assess where the extra volume is coming from (I’ve already tried pinching out etc but I think there are too many issues for me to see the wood for the trees). I should say that I am generally a UK pattern size 14/16, often grading to 18 hip. On this pattern I have cut the toile to a 14 and it’s just about OK on the hip, so obviously I haven’t gone way off beam on my sizing overall. Apologies if this is just too much for one question but I so want to understand how I tackle this type of issue as I have pretty much got it sorted on set in sleeve patterns!,,

I'm wanting to do a raglan sleeve with a dart where the shoulder seam would be. If I take the dart out at the neckline, do I compensate by increasing the armscye at front and back neckline, or add to the sleeve width at the top sides or center?

Yes you can!...and actually one of the patterns that will be coming in the fall/winter is a woven raglan sleeve top with a gently gathered neckline and wrists! Thanks for catching the replay!!
