Subsequent 37 | Precision Audio Analysis

In this video, Grammy Award Winner Cory Henry visits the Moog Factory to put the new Subsequent 37 through its paces, and Moog Music's Chief Engineer compares the audio output from the Sub 37 Tribute Edition and the new Subsequent 37 using an audio precision analyzer and oscilloscope.
In the spirit of continuous improvement, the award-winning Sub 37 Tribute Edition has been discontinued from production to make way for a new standard: The Subsequent 37. Implementing upgraded sonic modifications and functional enhancements, the Subsequent 37 features increased headroom in the mixer, a modified filter section, re-tuned MultiDrive circuit, high-powered headphone amplifier and an upgraded keybed. The new Subsequent 37 will be the standard production model moving forward

Class. Simply brilliant and beautiful. Using Dr. Bob Moogs 1960s ladder filter in 2018 simply show the man’s genius. Moog just does it better all the time. Apple are you hearing this ? These guys treat customers like family. They don’t sell you a synth and make you buy the filters, Apple does that to their products which is a shame. Moog engineers personally talk to you and revert. Apple does not even bother to respond. They simply don’t care once you buy their product, and they avoid responsibility for faulty production. I don’t think Moog till date has a single unsatisfied customer. The sound of a Moog is like therapy. Thank you Bob.

Good thing about Moogs and other analogs is good resell value. As long as you didn't thrash your synth, it should fetch for a pretty high price still. Just think of the loss as rent and then you can upgrade to Subsequent 37.

New to the synth market and have been debating between cutting corners for a cheaper intro model (e.g., Minilogue), but after visiting a local shop here and watching this vid, I believe holding off to accommodate a major increase in quality will be my final verdict. This instrument is rowdy.

Without a doubt, this is the next Moog synth I want for songwriting. I demonstrate the Mother-32 as a songwriting tool on my channel (e.g. tracks "Twin Wing" and "Please Don't Come Home") but it was a major challenge to write and record on the Mother-32. The Sub-37 would give me a much smoother workflow and help write and record more songs faster :) Can't wait to get one. Thanks for this great demo!

Having now bought a Subsequent 37, after having a Sub37, I can some up the sonic differences: The subsequent 37 sounds very slightly cleaner and clearer due to the extra mixer headroom, so the oscillators now have a little more breathing room and don't get crushed so much. It's also a touch brighter since it sounds like the filter brings out the harmonics a tiny bit more, so the 24dB/8ve filter sounds a bit less muted than before. All these changes are very slight though and still sounds basically like a sub 37. However WARNING: if you simply transfer your patches from the sub37 to the subsequent then by default they will probably sound more gritty/less clean if there was any multidrive on it since the position saved will correspond to more drive now, since the range has been increased. Adjusting the knob down though will instantly correct it. The keyboard action - honestly I can't really notice any difference. Some people might though.

The pure sine wave is generated by the Audio Precision Analyzer and then sent into the external audio input of each instrument. This allows us to accurately evaluate the precise differences between the mixer and filter sections of each synth.

If there's more headroom on the mixer as advertised, wouldn't this mean you actually wouldn't be able to push the filter as hard. I get that more headroom can allow for a cleaner sound (I welcome this), but at the same time on the video it says on the subsequent 37 the mixer can push the filter harder than on the sub 37 allowing for richer harmonics/more distortion. Surely you can't have it both ways. I imagine it's the changes to the post-filter multidrive where the extra distortion is coming from, not pre-filter?

Aside from the CV Outputs, there are no functional or sonic differences between the Subsequent 37 and the Subsequent 37 CV. Beyond the color differences between the two, the Subsequent 37 CV also features wood inset solid aluminum sidepieces whereas the Subsequent 37 has the classic solid wood sides. The Subsequent 37 CV is limited to 2000 pieces. The Subsequent 37 is now a standard production model.

Like the first one it needs a better display that displays bpm in fine numbers so when working in a situation we're only a single synth is used ....and its time to add a lighting native connection so complex arrangements can be handled by a smartphone or tablet. Has anybody an idea how to delete Presets? I installed some Peter Dyer presets trough the Editor Software and everything went well but now I'd like to remove them from my subsequent (like it was delivered, factory state, so I want to init all the presets I made, except of them which the subsequent get delivered with, so the pre installed) Find no answer in the Manual, only how to reset the global menu, but the presets stay. If anybody has an idea please help! Thanks in advance.
