In this video I show you everything you need to know about subsonic (a.k.a. infrasonic) filters. The subsonic filter is used to protect your subwoofer from damage due to playing low and loud. It is easy to set all you need are test tones and a multi-meter.

Since i have access to a SPL meter, I use that, along with test tones, and set on repeat, to set my subsonic filter. I recommend using a test tone 5Hz to 10Hz below port tuning, and reducing SPL output @ that freq., by 1 to 3Db depending on how much power you have, and how conservative you want to be. Example: If you have (2) -1,000 watt r.m.s. Subwoofers, and power them with recommended power, which is usually around 75% of r.m.s. power handling, so around 1,500 r.m.s for the pair, i would use a test tone 7Hz below port tune, and reduce output by 2Db. Make sure the subsonic is turned all the way down, before starting the test. Start selected test tone on repeat @ a conservative volume, example: If a system is capable of 140Db @ max, @ 45Hz, and the ported enclosure was tuned @ 37Hz, i would use a 30Hz test tone, and turn up the volume slowly to around 120Db (have SPL meter set to real time=Not peak hold), @30Hz, so its loud enough, but very sustainable, and wont heat up coils quickly, or drop voltage. Also listen to the speaker, if it makes bad noises, turn it down, or off. Then slowly adjust the subsonic filter, until it reduces the Db by 2, @ 30Hz, so 118Db. If you want to be more conservative/safe, set subsonic -3Db, @ 5Hz below port tuning, and if you want to be less conservative, set subsonic -1Db, @ 10Hz below port tuning. Hope this helps, have a great day, Audio fans.

Be mindful guys the -3dB at the Crossover Point only applies to Butterworth. (And 1st order Bessel) My Hifonics ZEUS ZRX1216.1D for example will not follow the .708 like this video. I found it to follow .58 which is exactly like a 2nd order Bessel filter. I found out my crossover type by leaving the infrasonic filter at the lowest it would go (10Hz in my case) and playing a sine wave at the highest mine would go (40Hz) and taking note of the voltage difference to figure out the filter type. In my case my sub almost doesn't need a infrasonic filter (Mines set to 13Hz now or something crazy) with how low I'm tuned, but these videos still helped me push to figure out some cool new things. Happy New Year everyone!

Im using a JL audio HD 1200/1 to run a 13W7 in a ported enclosure. The HD1200/1 has a infrasonic filter which is factory set at 30hz and can only be set to on or off. My ported enclosure is built to JL audio specifications and tuned to 34.6hz. I feel the 30hz infrasonic filter is a little too close to the box tuned frequency of 34 and may be losing/missing alot of bass. I've turned the infrasonic filter off and the sub plays alot better and sounds much smoother aswell. I can't help but be a little worried about damaging the sub.
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you don't want to damage that awesome subwoofer. I think your answer will depend on the type of music you play. If you are into re-bassed music, trap and bass-heavy stuff (techmaster peb etc etc) you will want the filter. For normal music just go easy on the volume knob and turn it down if you hear distortion. It will distort before it bottoms out.

English is not my first language, I can quite get the whole point but I'm missing out on some information, when you said about the cubic ft of the box the below octave thing, so if I have a 30hz tuned box and didn't used the software that you've said and unsure about anything I can just put it in 1/2 octave which is about 20hz right? (Cause yours are 40 to 30 if it's 1/2 octave) and about the -3 db thing, should I do that? Or I'm good with the tune of the box times .75? And is the 10v to 7.04v in general? (Depending on the outcome of the tune x .75 of course) So I have 30hz tuned box. 30 x .75 = 22.5 So maybe 23hz test tone right? Note: I've set the gain first of all. Then lower or increase the volume until you get 10v from the terminals? Then put it in 7.04v? Then that's it? Please help, I can't quite understand. Thank you.
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you have it figured out. You wan to set infrasonic filter at (tuning frequency) *.75. So play the appropriate test tone (with the filter off or set to the lowest possible setting) and adjust the volume knob until you get 10 volts (the 10 volts is just to make the math easy). Then turn on the filter and adjust the frequency until you get 7.04v on the DMM.

Should the tone be -3dB or 0dB?

I just ordered an American bass xr 10d4 and a rockville db15 amp. The sub is rated for 1,000 watts rms and the amp is rated for 1,500 watts cea rms. I was told it was better to have an amp that had more power than needed to avoid clipping. Is this true or did I make a bad decision?
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 3 жыл бұрын
No, you did not make a mistake. At the very least if you decide you want a slightly bigger sub you don't have to replace the amp. But, you need to understand the logic behind that advice. It's not unusual for someone to buy subwoofer and an amp, set everything up and then discover that it's not loud enough for their taste. So what do they do? They turn the gain up and the subwoofer fails. So this rule of thumb was developed to prevent that from happening. It is a psychological trick used to keep us from clipping. If you buy a 800 watt amp to go with your 1,000 watt subwoofer then you think that you can crank the gain up a bit because the sub should be able to handle the power. So you do, you clip the amp and you blow the sub. But if you hook a 1500 watt amp to your 1000 watt subwoofer then you know that you have more than enough power to blow the sub so you will take it a little bit easier on the gain and the volume.

@@DIYAudioGuy JL Audio manual clearly states that it is better to use an amp that is less than the continuous RMS rating so, for a 500 Watt speaker, use a 300 Watt amp. In fact, it states that the lower the amp wattage, the less change of damage, but that the performance may not be as good. I don't really understand how you can blow a subwoofer with a low wattage amp, even if you turn up the gain. A company like JL Audio would hardly give advice that may potentially cause failure on their speakers, so, I am not really sure where this myth of using higher wattage amps than the continuous RMS rating comes from, but many people believe it.

I'm not sure what you mean by two subs facing two others in a single box. But in general sealed enclosures don't really need an infrasonic filter. That's not an absolute truth, just the general trend. The air inside of the enclosure acts as a spring that makes it harder for the cone to move.

The KZbin copyright system is complicated. a lot of times you can't hear anything that sounds remotely like music when people are doing bass demos on KZbin, so the algorithm can't match it and the owner of the music can't really discern if it's theirs or somebody else's. Sometimes you get a copyright strike and KZbin will take the video down. Sometimes the owner of the copyrighted music will make a copyright claim, the video will stay up but any ad revenue from KZbin goes to the copyright owner. If you get three copyright strikes KZbin can take your channel down.

That is a lot to take in! I'm not sure if I can really answer it fully in KZbin comments. Let me start by saying that you've got an awesome ride. The downside is that it's very difficult to integrate into a new factory radio. I personally would have looked into an amp pro. I think they make them for Fiat Chryslers vehicles. The anmp pro does not look like much But if it is compatible it is the best way to get line outputs from your factory system. They come with a T harness you literally just clip them in and you get six channels of full range RCA output. As far as the distortion goes from your current speakers, you probably need a higher crossover frequency. I'm not a big fan of throwing three and a half inch coaxials in the dash. I think you would be a lot better off with a component system. If you hav seen my three-way installation videos you know that I have a wide band driver in the dash location and a tweeter's surface mounted on it on the dash. I honestly think I could get away without the tweeter. Having said all that, I don't recommend that you spend any more money. I'm just not a fan of throwing money at problems. Instead you should play with your settings, any equalization or crossover features on the amp and the LC7i. Tinker with it until you can get it to sound better, tinker some more and see if you can get it to sound great. If that doesn't work then you might want to consider switching out gear. I appreciate your kind words and the positive feedback on my videos. I have a lot of fun tinkering around with audio projects and I want to share the hobby with the world.

No worries bro I got you. Plug in your port tune number instead of my example one. 1. What's your port tuned to? Let's call it 32hz (change to your tune) 2. So, 32hz × .75 = 24hz (so you need to play a 24hz tone) 3. You want your dmm plugged into pos & neg speaker terminals 4. With the tone playing, adjust the volume on your head unit until it's reading 10v on the dmm 5. Now you can set the ssf, adjust the ssf on the amp until the dmm reads 7.08v (You wanna get it as close as possible to 7.08v, but it won't hurt the subs any if you can't get it exact & it's reading like 7.05 instead. After that you're good to go man ssf is set Side note: if you can't get the volume to read exactly 10v, he did it for easy math. The equation is 10v × .708 = 7.08v. So, you can replace 10v with whatever number you're closest to then multiply by .708. That becomes the number you adjust the ssf to on step 5. I'd try to get 10v tho it's a much easier number. On a Subsonic Filter 20hz - 50hz What would it be at 12:00 position? 35hz? 20+50=70hz 70/2= 35hz Thanks for anybody that can’t help me figure it out.. Also, LPF 20hz - 200hz Half way would be 110hz and 9:00 position being 55hz?

You can't really trust the markings on the potentiometers. Play a test tone equal to the frequency where you want to set the crossover and follow the instructions in the video.

If you really want to know what it looks and sounds like feel free to make those adjustments with your own amplifier. Just don't come crying to me when you damage your gear.
