Random Art Attack

Күн бұрын

In this tutorial, we are quickly creating a wood material in Substance Designer. I do a little shameless plugging for my Patreon for the first 30 seconds, but we get right into the tutorial afterward. This tutorial was made possible by my patrons, so I want to give them a shoutout.
As always check us out on a variety of different media:
Website: www.randomartat...
Twitter: / randomartattack
Facebook: / randomartattack
And of course, if you like what we do and want to support us, we have a Patreon: / randomartattack
Silver tier or higher patrons will get access to the wood material. :)

8:10 Nooooo... It's a roughness map. It doesn't NEED to be in color, it should be grayscale. 😮‍💨

Video looks great and well done. Sadly it doesnt seem too helpful as many things are pretty different. Maybe If I knew how to use designer this could still make a good reference. Hope you make a new Video as the quality is brilliant. Level of Detail on my end is much lower and looks a lot rougher even though im trying to follow along exactly.

the most well structured tutorial I've come across. Short, explained, properly guided too

I can't really follow your steps as it seems like SD has been changed a lot since you made this tutorial. I don't have the Perlin Noise 1 generator nor do I get the automaticaly added node between the Gradient Linear 2 and the Vector Warp, there I added a Gradient Map which seems to be the node that's been added in your tutorial but in my case the texture still doesn't look the same as in your video. So sadly I've to mention that the words "simple" and "fast" in the title of your tutorial won't fit anymore.

I am sorry that you are having difficulties. What version are you using? I just checked the most recent version and Perlin noise 1 exists. As to your other concerns I am not able to reproduce the same issues you are having. I am happy to help if I can.

@@RandomArtAttack I'm using vesion 2019.1.0 but I'm in trial phase and I don't know if maybe there are some differences between the trial version and the full version.

@@RandomArtAttack Okay, to get the automatically added node I just had to enable this option in the Preferences -> Graph menu but I still don't understand why I don't have the Perlin Noise 1 and Perlin Noise 2. I only have Perlin Noise, 3D Perlin Noise and 3D Perlin Noise Fractal. Edit: Okay again ^^ After doing a little research I found this thread forum.substance3d.com/index.php?topic=20223.0 (I think they're talking about your tutorial ^^) They're saying that Perlin Noise 1, 2 and Zoom have been replaced since version 2017.2. and that the Perlin Noise 1 maybe now is called Gaussian Noise. However, using the Gaussian Noise lets reproduce your steps a bit easier but not not completely 1:1 and I still had to do some tweaks in the node.

In 2019.1 Just use Perlin Noise and then change the scale. It will look just like Perlin 1. Hope this helps, and thanks for the comment I am sure others had similar questions so now they have an answer. :)

What was the Setup when you created a new substance? to get the 4 nodes. Ah PBR Roughness and you deleted the inputs on the left.

Can't use Vector Warp with Gradient Linear 2,is there any solution for this because it seems that it requires only color nodes for attachment? Maybe should try another node or another version of the Substance Designer? I'm currently using 2018 1.2 Any help aprreciated.

If something requires a color input but all you have is a black and white input run it through gradient linear and set it to color in the options. Gradient linear has both black and white and color. It sounds like it is defaulting to color.

4 months later OP may have figured out, but if confused by the green smaller node between gradient 2 and vector warp grayscale? (appx 2m in)> it's a Gradient Map node. Go under Edit > Preferences and in the Graph tab, check the box next to 'automatically insert color/grayscale conversion nodes' and try to connect again... Hope that helps :)

Thanks for this! Do you happen to know of a way to build a 3D material? (Separate but connecting appearances for X,Y, and Z surfaces) I would like to build a wood texture that represents the center of the trunk & rings at the front and back, but corresponding grain along the sides.

IMO, nice albedo, terrible roughness and normal.

Love any feedback, care to elaborate beyond "terrible roughness and normal".
@antonyj3D

Just to add my 2p worth; the only thing I might consider with the roughnesss is creating both a curvature and curvature smooth map from the normals, then blending them together, adding a levels node then blending that in with the roughness you have already. That way the bare wood spots might react a little better and appear more rough....especially if you're going with a gloss finish on the wood itself. Great tutorial though! :D

@RandomArtAttack 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, couldn't agree more. Been using curvature smooth a lot more as of late to good effect.
