If you’re asking yourself this question, give yourself a pat on the back. It means you’re watching stuff IN English. And as for the answer to the question, in my opinion, it depends on what is helping you to learn better. You might want to focus on increased comprehension and vocab acquisition, so you might choose to see the complete dialogue in the subtitles. Other times you might want to just rely on your listening comprehension, then you’ll turn off the subs. What matters is that you’re being INTENTIONAL and are willing to push a little outside of your COMFORT ZONE.

Yes, you're right. As for me, I watch video both with and without subtitles. It may be the same video. The first time without subtitles trying to decipher what it is said and the second time with subtitles accessing the possible mistakes and collecting new expressions. Nice lesson, short and sweet!

2:00 I am totally the opposite. If i use subtitles, my brain doesn't need to work really hard to focus on the audio, i only need to focus on the the subtitles, so it's easier for me to understand the overall meaning of the subtitles without translating to my native language because i feel like i am not trying to read the subtitles but only scan it and understand it, so it's happened really fast. In contrast , when i'm not using subtitles, i feel like my brain is working harder because need to focus on two things. First, trying to catch every single word and understand the language by translating per one word. So maybe it depends on your level in reading and listening. If you do more often in reading than listening, than using subtitles is easier. But if you rarely reading, you're not used to reading English, that's why you tend to translate it, because you cannot read quickly. Also, my listening skill is usually the lowest when i'm taking English test. So i think i have to start listening English without subtitles by now to improve my listening skill.

Same here. I get mediocre when i am at the moment of listening. But in another case, when the reading section, at least i feel like motivated to answer. 🥲

Yes, you are right. I use subtitles when the listen to music on KZbin and they use to many mixed words or slang also when I hear another accent . Also if you don't have enough vocabulary subtitles are very helpful because watching the movie and listening to ansbxhwjxjdjsjd will not help you with English if you have A2 lvl or less.

I searched this video with the intention to get a tip to how view the videos in KZbin and others, honestly I seen this video without caption and even so I understood all at you said, definitely this is better because I don't translate in my head with my native language the phrases in English, I recommend try. *I'm A2 level*

Yes, when we saw the subtitle, we will try to translate them. It makes us easy to understand every single words, adding the new words but make us slow to understand without thinking. Thank you Naila for your view.

I use subs because my vocabulary isn't good enough. If I find a new word while watching video, it'll make it easy to remember and memorize sentences. I always memorize sentences then words, but sometimes we find a new one, so we have to memorize them. That's how subs work for me. But when I watch a video without subtitles, I am still able to understand it, but of course I always find a word which I don't know what it's.

I think you are right Miss. Because like you said with subtitles l translate English to my native language. With subtitles I can't learn English better and it's truly difficult to me understand my target language correctly. My target language is English. So like you said I think without subtitles I can learn English better and more awesomely than with subtitles. Thank you for your explanation Miss.

Krashen considers the material comprehensive input when you can fully understand more than 95% of it. I would like to think this way - if I can already understand more than 95% of it, subtitles won't benefit me. If not, it can benefit me.

Kalau dipikir-pikir benar juga. Kalau pakai subtitle jadi harus diterjemahkan dulu. Kalau langsung dengar sebenarnya sudah paham.

You can actually simply say "Indonesian" rather than "Bahasa Indonesia" tho, just like any other languages, e.g. French, Chinese, German, Dutch, Portuguese, etc.

i had the same problem. in my opinion the best solve of it is have more practice in speaking. more practice and you start to feel confident in dialogue. quite obviously, but truly effective.
