The net network of the suburban rail system of Hamburg - short presentation, scenes from December 10, 2023
With the new timetable from December 2023 the suburban rail network of Hamburg has been re-designed and simplified. There are now 4 lines instead of 6 - S1, S2, S3, and S5.
So far, S1 and S11 had the route from Poppenbüttel or Hamburg Airport to Wedel, drawn in green on the map. Brown was the colour of S21 and S2 between Aumühle and Elbgaustraße. Violet was the colour of S3 and S31 between Pinneberg and Neugraben or Stade. The lines with the additional 1 - S11, S21, and S31 - travelled along "Verbindungsbahn", via Dammtor, while S1, S2, S3 used the city tunnel via Jungfernstieg and Landungsbrücken. S11, S2, and S31 were additional lines.
S1 now is at first look just what it was before, going from Airport or Poppenbüttel to Wedel.
From Aumühle and Bergedorf S2 goes to Hamburg central station and on to Altona via Dammtor. During peak hours S1 and S2 trains run at shorter intervals.
Passengers from Bergedorf to Jungfernstieg always have to change trains now. The same applies to passengers from Poppenbüttel or Airport to Dammtor. At first sight this looks like a drawback. But before, you also had to change trains during most of the day. The old direct connections from Poppenbüttel to Dammtor or from Bergedorf to Jungfernstieg were only available during peak hours. S-Bahn Hamburg has announced that you can still change trains at both sides of the same platform.
S3 has the same route as before, from Pinneberg via Altona and Jungfernstieg to Harburg and Neugraben. It is drawn in violet on the map like before. In the new network all trains end at Neugraben, like in the years before the line was extended towards Stade.
From December 10, 2023, S5 travels from Elbgaustraße via Dammtor and central station to Neugraben, Buxtehude, and Stade. Only this line runs to Stade where the tracks have AC overhead wires. In some years the AKN route to Quickborn and Kaltenkirchen will be electrified with AC wires as well. S5 will then go to Kaltenkirchen instead of Elbgaustraße, and this will be a line for trains capable of DC and AC operation.
