Having a racial preference is fine but thinking people outside of that race are unattractive might be problematic. It becomes colorism if you put down others because they have dark skin, for example only dating asians that have light skin but not if they are darker, dating black people but only if they have lighter skin, and saying those with darker skin are somehow less than the other specifically because of their skin, same applies for the latin community and middle easterns, really almost every racial group. Personally, I think dating only one race is a bit weird outside of the compatible cultural aspects.

As a black woman MY definition of colorism is kinda the same as Christine ,like if we take the case of black women , colorism applies if you're like :''yeah I prefer light skins girls cause the dark skins are uglier/less pretty". so, it's called preference. But when you decide to compare or not date someone because of some shit like color ,and that the only reason for you to like them or not is by their color or race ,that becomes colorism. Having a racial preference isn't inherently bad by itself if it's isolated, but the problem is pretty much any reason you prefer a race can lead to racism, or is rooted in racism. If you find a specific race more physically attractive for instance, and the implication is you find other races less attractive, then you literally have a racial aesthetic hierarchy. You are subconsciously going to treat people of that race better, and even with Christine's example, more of her friends are likely East Asian, and she probably treats East Asian people better on average compared to other races. It is normal to prefer your own race due to how beauty standards form, but we statistically treat people we find more attractive better, and most times people's racial preferences align with the ethnicities of their friends/people they respect because it is almost impossible to abstract racial preferences from how we view race as race exists outside of just dating.

Theirs colorism when you find it more attractive to date a lighter more white passing POC in that case because POC come in different colors heights weight and facial features, etc. (Ex. Liking lighter skin latinas over afro-latinas). But on what Cristine said, it bad when you only like them because they are a specific race/ethnicity rather than the connection between you two, then I would see that as fetishizing over a specific group of women/man of color. You can like people and it just so happens they are a specific group but don’t be like “ I only date …”, that specifically is fetishizing them when you say that.

About the colorism and racism comments when it comes to dating, I think it’s crucial that when asking those questions, you should try to dissect why it is that you only find white and/or lighter POC women physically attractive rather than darker skin women. Our physical attraction is not an independent choice, it’s based on influential social constructs, like white supremacy, which are so heavily implemented in society, that ultimately effect the people we are attracted to. A majority of the media we consume and the social norms that we inherently adopt in society (especially in western countries) primarily exhibits white and lighter skin women and men as the beauty standard. Therefore, many heterosexual men and women say that they prefer or are more attracted to white and/or lighter skin people because we have internalized these social constructs, which excludes darker skin people. From personal experience, when I began to understand why I thought only white men were physically attractive, I realized that it is because of my internalized colorism and racism that I had subconsciously learned over the years that had formed this bias in my head. Retrospectively, it seems odd to me now that I used to be not attracted to an entire race of people. Every race is incredibly diverse physically, therefore negating an entire group of people solely because of physical traits that have been stereotypical deemed as “unattractive”, just doesn’t feel right to me and highlights the pervasiveness of racism and colorism in western societies. There can be other reasons an individual will chose to exclusively date a certain type of person, like for cultural reasons. Overall though, when it comes to having a “racial preference”, it is important for everyone to understand within themselves why they have a preference. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk lmao :)

it upset me how surface level they took it but most people think this way so I’m not surprised. Ppl view it as something “normal” or “just a preference” but when you look deeper it’s always so telling why you have those certain preferences. The reason why I complain about a guy texting me is partly wanting to see if he gets jealous and partly a shittest of seeing how controlling the guy is. If he tells me to block without listening to me, I see brown flags (not quite red flags but something to watch if it turns into a red flag).
@myewzek29132 жыл бұрын
I recommend reading the short story “Cat Person” (Kristen Roupenian) if you want a better idea of why women don’t block people most of the time. To summarize it without much nuance: they’re taught that their worth comes from how much others (especially men) desire them, so they’re conditioned to just take it. That’s not always going to be why, but a lot of the time women give men far too many chances for that reason. Even Christine mentioned it; she said a woman won’t block a man because if she does he’s going to call her a bitch. If you think about it, she’d never hear him call her a bitch because she blocked him. But the idea that he thinks she’s a bitch is enough to put her off blocking him. So she’d rather remain desirable to this man she doesn’t desire, because being desired is something women are taught gives them value.

addressing the race thing - people like to say that’s a preference but many people say their preference WHILE disrespecting/speaking down on other races to uplift their preference and that’s when it becomes racist/colorist. also i think if you wouldn’t date someone solely bc of their race which is something they can’t change that’s a lil iffy to me but that may just b me - dating based on race just has a lot of disrespect, stereotypes and colorism tied to it and it’s hard to detach one from the other

I don’t think finding a certain race attractive is racist or colorist. But it’s a thin line because I think it’s racist or colorist once you stop being open to other races or skin tones because you find them unattractive. my opinion on the colorism thing is, its okay to have a racial preference. certain people are just more attracted to the facial features of different races so its not bad to say youre mostly attracted to latina women or black women but when you decide that you like a race so much thats the only thing you look for in a partner or you say youd never date a certain race because theyre not what you like, i think thats when it becomes colorism or racist

mmm i usually agree with Christina but I definitely don't agree with her on it being preference instead of colorism. If your preference or attraction (or lack there of) is driven through the color of their skin then it definitely becomes problematic. However i think theres traits about other people that may attract you to another person for many reasons tho.
@serenitygoodman48412 жыл бұрын
I think one of the reasons I agree with her is because different races tend to be raised differently and have different customs and most people are attracted to someone with similar ways as them or like different customs to what they were raised with even though you can be a certain color without having those customs it does play a roll in who they are as a person which would affect how attractive someone is
@michellleana2 жыл бұрын
@@serenitygoodman4841 i think at that point you’re attracted to the cultural similarity that you and your partner share. similarity can breed attraction. you’re attracted to the similarity (customs, traditions) you both have, not because of the color of their skin.
@marissajovel33312 жыл бұрын
theres two different ways the topic can go tho. what christine was saying was correct bc preferring to date someone of ur same culture is not colorism/racism at all. if someone were to not date a certain race bc of the color of their skin thats when it becomes racist. christine prefers asians bc they were raised w same w the same culture/values thats not being racist for wanting to have a partner w the same way of thinking.
