Great video. Thank you for doing it. I really enjoyed listening to your thoughts on Carey's use of perspective.

Yes! Wise Counsellor kick-starts the discussion on Tolkien subversion! :) Well, you basically covered up all the No-Spoiler bases of that duology. Can't wait to have a Spoilers discussion of this. In my opinion, Carey's work is remarkable. It's not just subverting Tolkien, it's how she does it. The cultures she draws from, the way she keeps the emotional connection with the reader, the way she doesn't "demonize" the "good side", realizing that doing so would defeat the entire purpose of the subversion ( by just flipping sides with a new aesthetics). It's a seriously underrated work with so much to offer. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Now I know where you got that "Wise Counsellor" lol Normaly I would have preferred to do a spoilery discussion as well, but I figured almost nobody would be able to watch it anyway because it's so underrated. I think the ending might have similar vibes to Lotr...you know, Lotr doesn't exactly have a happy ending, and the theme of magical aspects of the world fading away as the world progresses is there as well.

This was a great video, Counsellor, thank you! I haven't read Carey's books, but seeing you discuss them, I think they will make an interesting read. Thank you! :)

I think you might enjoy this series! I have now put her Kushiel series onto my Tbr list as well. I've been hesitant about it because I usually don't read 'erotic fantasy' but I think I would like to give it a try now.

Bonus points if you can tell me from which literary character I borrowed the title-quote xD

This book sounds interesting! I heard before about Jacqueline Carey, but mostly the Kushiel saga. As you talked about it, I would have thought this was released in the 1970s or the 1980s but that's exactly much more recent (2004-2005 following Wikipedia). That could be enthralling as a good fantasy reading!

Yeah, it's still relatively new, but it has a very classic feel to it, which I enjoyed. Books like this always make me a little nostalgic. I hope you'll enjoy it if you decide to pick it up!

I am so tired of the subversion of everything we love....

The authors political and personal opinions are on every page - way too preachy for me
