I checked an inflation calculator and a $5 footlong from 2010 would be $7.25 now. Their prices have risen way above inflation, as have everyone else's in the fast food and restaurant industry. Subway used to slap 10-20 years ago. Those $5 footlongs at the 24 hour Subway right next to the dorms got me through many a late night in college. The bread was always fresh baked daily in store too. One night I was so drunk and so ravenously hungry I wolfed down 2 footlong Italian BMTs after midnight. Good times good times. Nowadays notsumuch. I'd be pretty pissed to spend $26 on 2 stale ass 10.5 inch "footlongs" that used to cost $12-13 😐

I got a philly cheesesteak from subway a few months back and it was the worst sub I’ve ever had. They put barely any meat on it and loaded it with condiments to the point where that’s all I could taste when I bit into it. The bread was stale and the veggies were soggy. Basically dog food. I learned from a marketing class that it was because $5 footlongs was supposed to just be a short promotion, but it got way too iconic so they leaned into it. The problem was that selling them at 5 bucks was at a loss meaning that they didn't make any profit off of selling subs. Usually when you have a loss leader on a menu, you need something else on the menu to make up that money (i.e. Costco Hotdog). Since people only went in to buy subs and nothing else, they just ended up tanking a lot of profit loss. This led to them closing a lot of stores nationwide. They essentially marketed themselves into a corner. That's why now they are heavily marketing other items on the menu instead of the sub, like the "sidekicks"; because if those things are successful and people buy them regularly enough, they could potentially bring the price of normal subs back down.

You definitely need to take a road trip soon to the closest Publix. The deli there has a variety and the ingredients are fresh and tasty. And every week there is a discount on one of the full subs. I usually go on the app then go to the store and pick it up because there is usually a line. My top three subs are 1. Honey chicken cutlet, 2. Italian sub 3. Turkey & pork. Actually, there are so many options and I haven't tried them all (I usually get the discounted subs or one of my top 3). There are different sauces (I usually use 4 sauces) and veggies to go along with the proteins. You can have the sub toasted or pressed. There is also an option to make the sub into a salad and use spinach instead of bread for those that go Keto. It would be interesting if you took a trip to Charlotte and got an Italian sub from each place: Publix, Jersey Mike's, & Firehouse then compared each.

I remember like 20-25 years ago when Subway did two foot-longs on Sundays during football season for $6 or $7. Those were the days. I'd smash two of those while I'd watch the game - and life was pretty decent. Man, now that I think about it - I think I only weighed like a buck sixty-five back then, too. I had that high metabolism action going on though. Now I'd have to take out a loan, and never be happy with the return on my investment. Lol. Prices are supposed to double (on average) every twenty years with normal inflation. I think someone forgot to tell some of these restaurants that.

When they did the $5 footlongs it was at a financial loss to them, one reason why they've only gone back to that once and then abandoned it altogether. Another thing worth mentioning is Subway locations change your experience depending on who owns it. We have like five or so of them in town and there's only two I will go to (owned by the same person) because they always keep the quality control and cleanliness up to par. The other locations are more lax so you have a far worse experience. I don't mind Subway and there's usually some kind of coupon or deal. Right now they have a $7.99 deal here for a six inch sandwich, chips and a drink

The secret to a good subway sandwich: its toast time. You have to tell them: Toast until Black or the toast time of 90 seconds or less. It guarantees that the meat side of the sub is well cooked so that the veggies and condiments will balance the structure of sub. And trust me: it hits every time. Another advice to mobile users, make sure YOU are presently there before submitting an order and tell them about your special instructions while you sit and wait. Subway is the best in being the more efficient way of eating subs than other competitors who charge $10 or more. Plus the app rewards extensively the more you buy their subs so thats a plus. Just follow my advice and you'll never be disappointed. 😉
