SUBWAY - Propaganda / The Murder of Love - A Secret Wish 1985 - Luc Besson film - Original Car Chase

This is the car chase’s original music reproduced by my memory. I don't think this is perfectly correct. Because I have no copy of the film. When the movie was opened at a theater in 1985, I saw the film “Subway”(original edition) just once. This original version had been shown on television in the Europe. During the car chase sequence in the alternative version, the music (titled "Speedway" by Éric Serra on the soundtrack album) had been replaced from the original song "The Murder of Love" by German band Propaganda. Since that, the standard of the release of Home Media (VHS video, LaserDisc, DVD, Blu-ray) were an alternate edition. I think maybe there were some problems about music use in the movie. It was only English version for a long time, but a French edition was released later. An original edition of this movie doesn't exist as media, so I edited a movie with CD and some additional sound effect, and made this version. However the opening car chase sequence is said to pay homage to the film “The French Connection” (1971), I think that's only partial. You will find out that the footage as if a City is Playing Music! I wish that an original edition will be released officially someday, so that “Luc Besson” and “Propaganda” may be benefited mutually.

Thanks for that. I have searched and searched for that version. I believe it was on the channel four version which myself and my brother video taped and watched over and over. I was so disappointed a few years ago when I got the dvd and it had some wierd track it's place. I love the bit when he's in the tunnel and the song hits the chorus as he drives along with the lights in the background. Pure eighties gold!! Stay safe

+Wil dolan Thank you! I had a hard time to synchronize the music on the CD with the video. It was difficult to adjust the speed of the music and I spent a lot of time. Sound effects such as the driving sound and crash of a car have various free sound sources. The breath of a man jogging is the breath sound I reproduced. :)

Same here, it's my favourite film but it badly needs to be viewed as I originally saw it on C4 with Murder of Love, cos Fred was far too cool to get excited over finding a cassette with the replacement muzak on it.

Bravo! I bought the VHS and then the DVD and was so disappointed that they had changed the intro track. You've solved a 36-year mystery for me! I think you've got the sync pretty much perfect with the key-change when Lambert drives down the ramp into the underpass. Bravo, bravo!

I have still have an original VHS recording of the Channel 4 broadcast with the Propaganda intro. This intro is off course far superior to what is available. When I have time I will upload but in the meantime this is pretty good and very close to that version.

Thanks for doing this. I ordered the film on Apple TV today and was completely bemused by the opening music. I had remembered the thumping, jarring impact of the Propaganda track. When it wasn't there I thought I had somehow misremembered the film! Shame on ZTT if they blocked usage of TMoL. Note above that the album which contains this track is actually called 'A Secret Wish'.

+relict hominin Thank you! You must have been disappointed with the official movie. I think that there are two possible reasons. 1st, as you say, the ZTT Records did not allow the use of the music. 2nd, after the movie was completed, Besson learned that PROPAGANDA was a German Rock band and replaced it because he didn't want to use the music. In Besson's movies like "TAXi", French cars always beat German cars. Perhaps Besson didn't realize that PROPAGANDA was a German Rock band then he was using their music. Because ZTT Records is a British label. He may have thought that German music wasn't right to power Fred. None of them are beyond my speculation. :)

@@commandtcommandv5462 Thanks for the theories. Makes sense. This film became one of my favourite movies, and introduced me to the Cinema du Look, ONLY because of the Propaganda music. I was channel hopping one evening and happened to catch The Murder of Love playing, as part of the intro to Subway, and stayed with the film. The two German writers for Propaganda (Ralph Dorpner and Michael Mertens from memory) had very little to do with the finished track, it was effectively created by producer Stephen Lipson in London. I don't think that the two guys even visited the studio. (I believe only the singer, Claudia Brucken, was present, possibly because she was dating Paul Morley of ZTT at the time - Morley lived in London). For me, the new music powering Fred is just not right. But I will not let that spoil my enjoyment! :-)

+relict hominin Thank you! I can understand your mention very well. I had a similar experience. This LP "A Secret Wish" released by ZTT Records was my favorite album. After a while, when I first watched Luc Besson's movie without knowing any details, the opening sequence played shocking music. That was "The Murder of Love" included in "A Secret Wish". I only watched the movie once. I wanted to see it again later, and when I searched for VHS, LaserDisc and DVD, but I couldn't find the song anywhere. I had no choice but to make it myself. :) In the near future I will be uploading a personal edit for "Dream within a Dream". Please look forward to it...

Brilliant. It certainly made the opening of the film cooler. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of Eric Serra’s music, but I felt Propaganda added a wonderful contemporary edge to start the industrial fires burning. As a young film student, fanatical about this period of French movies, I had the foresight to have a least taped in on a VHS cassette when Channel 4 first aired it. I still have the tape somewhere. I don't have a copy to refer to, so I had to go only from my memory. I am very excited to know that some people are recording the TV broadcasts of the time. If you find a VHS cassette tape, please upload it. I'd love to listen to the real soundtrack. For some reason, some of the engine sounds I made are actually Ferrari, not PEUGEOT or Mercedes-Benz. Even my mum would record anything interesting on British TV (a golden age of programming) and send me a box full of VHS tapes that I could watch when we lived in Paris at the time. I just wanted to recreate it, but it was very difficult, then it seemed like it would never be completed. So I had to do a lot of cheating of looking for similar sounds. Lol I hope that the recreated version of "SUBWAY" opening will be of some contribute to your good memories of this movie. :)
