Always stay alert (situational awareness) and make eye contact with people, especially those whse attention is on you.

Take karate or boxing or self defense lessons. I know karate and boxing but your best weapon is your brain. Use your brain when using the subway. Don’t sit in the back of the car or second car. Sit in the middle car where it’s crowded. The more people, the better it is for you. When exiting stay alert of surrounding and exit where large crowd is exiting. I take the train everyday and I do see some ish but I’m always alert and always prepared.

@@LifeisHardFightingiseasy I'm a native born and raised 41 years in NY spent most of my juvenile years on Rikers.. The level of lawlessness we've been living in for 4 years I've never seen.. As a 13 year old I never had to worry about if I would be murdered by another child... The problems these kids face today, no self defense class is gonna help you combat. Respectfully, This city has been purging since March of 2020 #LetsNotAvoidThat

We must start the Good Samaritans' urban self-defense network, where hand-combat self-defense is available for the public. Good Samaritans can cooperate with the police department with walkie-talkies while riding the subway to deal with any incident more efficiently. Some of us have streetwise self-defense experiences and need to share. Awareness is just the beginning. Just a thought.

As a former NYer i always pratice "what if" drills during my travels no matter where I am or what I'm doing. i.e. What if this random person walking by me were to get into my personal space or even make an unexpected move towards me? Answering these questions internally and formulating a defense on what you should do will raise your situational awareness and ability to react, and over time become habit. This costs you nothing, No formal training needed or fancy moves to learn but it could save your life. You would be surprised at how many people walk around without a clue that someone could actually just walk up and assault you for no rhyme or reason. I always hope for the best but EXPECT a person to do the worst in every situation / transaction.
