Great video. Yeah the stations are quite nice and clean in design. I've always been a fan. I'm also a big fan of the Breda trains used on the purple and red lines, but Metro and a lot of the passengers really do a terrible job in keeping them clean!

I'm guessing this was shot most likely on a Sunday. During the weekly rush hour it is kind of busy on the Metro. Sunday afternoons are actually quite a joy to ride because no one, as you can see on this video, rides them. I have the station and train pretty mush to myself. I often find myself going for a ride to the beach (blue line to Long Beach) or heading to the foothills for some drinks (Gold line to Pasadena).

Well it’s a couple of years since this video was posted and there’s been some changes. Ridership is way up. In fact it would be higher if Metro had planned for park n ride lots on the new Gold line and Expo extensions. They only had 15 years to plan for it. There is a shortage of train sets resulting in crowded rides with people standing most of the way during rush hour. Metro is expanding further down the Crenshaw line which hopefully will finally make a direct transit link to LAX a reality. The expanded heavy and light rail network has made getting around LA so much easier than just a few years ago. Certainly it’s so much more user friendly for tourists who can now see more of the city on their own without tour guides or renting a car which is not really all that appealing for visitors. Additionally the expanded network has spurred higher density developments aided by progressive planning policies which bodes well for LA’s future as a world class city of vibrant livable communities and reduced dependency on glass and steel boxes containing a few hundred pounds of internal combustion engine and four seats mounted on rubber wheels that need thousands of square feet of real estate to function and get around and store as well as deplete large chunks of peoples income just to enable people to go to work and go grocery shopping. It’s time to stop the madness. The day will come when we’ll have a car-free world and we’ll wonder how did we ever think that the motor car was such a good idea.

Why is the metro so empty? Compared to NYC. And downtown is so....quiet, I mean it's like two different worlds between LA and NYC. Is it always like this?
@SimplyDedayLifeInAmerica10 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right, you cannot see congested people here in downtown area. It is quiet here , the only place that I believe a little bit busy and noisy is in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where tourists flocks together.
@leeszikiat795310 жыл бұрын
Well, to be honest, that kind of disapoints me, seeing a big city like LA not thriving with walkability and such. Do you see it improving then? I have read it has improved though.
@DethWulf10 жыл бұрын
Lee Szi Kiat It kind of depends when and where you go. Downtown has always been bustling when I've gone there on the weekends, and I hear it's also picked up a lot during the week as well. I'd say it's overall rather lively, though there are some dead areas at times. As for the subway and trains, the only time I've seen them this empty was at 2am catching the Red Line back to North Hollywood, so I don't know when else it might be this empty (maybe closer towards the middle of the day).
@leeszikiat795310 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've recently seen alot of pics in a forum of street level LA. And from what I saw, it really is bustling, and some places have Manhattan-esque pedestrian traffic, I love it! Granted, LA is still a pretty suburby, sprawly city, but DTLA has definitely risen from the ashes of suburban sprawl, and I think (and hope) that LA would be as urban as the other walking cities in this country. What do you think?
@DethWulf10 жыл бұрын
LA is actually one of the least-sprawling big cities in the country, and (depending on the data you look at, I can't remember which) it's either the most- or the second-most dense urban area in the US. That's on average, though - some areas are less dense than other areas, but as a whole, it's fairly evenly-packed. It doesn't usually look that way to most because the city itself is so large (and when people think of LA, they usually think of the county and beyond). I actually like the way LA is now, and the direction it's headed in, if it can get things to work out right, hehe. It doesn't need to look as urbanized or dense as other cities in the US, as it's not (and I don't think it'll ever be) a...I dunno, downtown-centric city (I couldn't think of the word). Yeah, I would love it if Downtown and Hollywood and Century City and Pasadena and maybe even Long Beach and Warner Center in the San Fernando Valley would get more dense and urban and walkable with more high rises and such, and the city as a whole is kind of inching toward that direction (mostly through 4-7-story mixed users), but beyond that, I think (and hope!) it'll be fine :)
