I’ve never really been much of a competitor nor was I wanting to coach. Bjj was my stress reliever, but I’ve competed and kinda feel into helping teach. I’ve been on the mats for 14 years and currently a brown belt. The most rewarding thing ever in bjj was when that first white belt told me he hit a move I taught him in a live roll. So you just never know where this sport will take you. Just enjoy the ride 🤙🏼

This is why I always roll at 40 to 60% intensity most of the time. Never 100% every session for 3 - 5+ years straight, so I can go train more and I don't end up spending all the money visiting the doctor while reducing medical financial stress on my family.

I'm getting back into BJJ as a white belt after 2 years away from training, because of mental health reasons. Doing better now, and looking to also get in better shape physically. Just 2 more weeks until my first class back, really looking forward to it, training at a good gym in my hometown in southern Indiana.

100% - Arguably the best coach of all never competed…Danaher…

You don't have to be actively competing to be a great coach. In fact many of the best coaches no longer compete for various reasons. It will just allow you to dedicate more time/attention to your guys that compete. I'm also a purple belt with chronic neck issues that I have to manage. It's not worth it to push it and make it worse. I'd rather tone it down and be able to keep training for years to come.

I'm in a similar position. I've competed a good few time but I don't really show up when the time comes. I've done good but not great. I've recently coached a few teammates at a naga and when they won their matches I felt great! Id love to be that top of the podium guy but I'm getting older.
