Another aspect about the bird Tom and Greg ate is that it comes unsalted. The idea is that the little bones cut up the inside of your mouth ever so slightly while you eat it and your own blood "salts" it.

At the beginning of the show Shiv seems to want to get away from it all and try to be “a better person”, Logan will find a way to change that, Logan seems to enjoy making them compete. He knows how to get what he wants from each of them, this show is incredible.

What an episode - my favourite from season 1 (although 7 is a close second). I'm glad you guys get how both very funny and very dramatic this show can be! I think one thing to factor in is Roman is genuinely afraid of his father - if Logan has left the room, Kendall hadn't visited Alona or even been in the room then he wouldn't have lost the vote. Also can't wait for you to see Shiv in future seasons - I enjoy her now but her role gets a lot meatier as time goes on :) Also fun fact you may already know. Tom and Shiv's actors aren't American - Tom is British (and played Mr Darcy!) and Shiv is Australian.
@AmazingChi5 ай бұрын
More accurately, if he hadn't called Ilona. Visiting her secured her vote (she was voting against before, and he'd have lost anyway as a result). Ken is his own worst enemy.

A note on the episode title and song that plays at the end: “Which Side Are You On” is directly connected to an incredibly important moment in US history that isn’t nearly discussed enough. The song was written during the Harlan County War, a brutal and long conflict in the mountains of Kentucky between impoverished coal workers and the robber-barons who controlled the coal industries. With private police forces and the national guard on their side, mine owners brutalized, beat, and bombed striking mine workers to attempt to force them into submission against unionization. The song itself was written by the wife of an important union organizer after their family home was illegally raided by the sheriff in an attempt to intimidate them into leaving the movement. She famously wrote it on the back of a calendar. The song has since been covered by just about every great folk musician of the last hundred years. I feel like especially now in this country, we should all remember the Harlan War and this beautiful song. I love it’s ironic and poignant use in this show, very well done. Especially given that the Blind Wave guys are from relatively close to Kentucky, I’m a little surprised none of them mentioned it.

20:41 Ortolan is real and it's one of the most f'd up recipes humanity has invented. The Ortolan is kept in a dark cage which tricks them into eating a lot of grains. When preparing, the live songbird is then thrown into a container of brandy where it simultaneously drowns and marinades. As if this wasn't messed up enough, part of the taste of Ortolan comes from ones own blood as the bones prick and stab the mouth. This practice wasn't made illegal because it was cruel but because the dish was so popular the bird became an endangered species.

This episode is stressful! I watched it a few times already but I still get on edge. The first time, I had to stand up to watch, almost pacing around! I couldn't sit still. I was so tense and anxious lol I think a lot is uncover in this one. Tom and Shiv relationship get a degree more complex, we really see the power dynamics at play between them and how submissive Tom is. We wonder if is out of love or out of self interest... We'll see as the show unfolds. Its one of the most interesting relationships in the show. Kendall can go overboard out of lack of confidence and anxiety. No wonder he is a recovering addict. With this lifestyle and family, its crazy. Roman thrives when he is supported and encouraged but can crash and burn pretty easily under scrutiny, especially Logan's. He is indeed desperate for dad's approval and affection. And then there is Logan. He finally shows his strength after not being his full self in the begging of the show, after he had the stroke. We heard about him being a powerhouse but we didn't see the extent until this episode. And he is a beast.

In the real world, the CEO cannot legally fire half the board. The CEO answers on behalf of the company to the Board who answers to Shareholders. He can't fire half the board, since that would be the shareholders responsibility to vote Board members in or out during the Company's annual meeting. Plus, at least a few, if not most, of the Board members would likely be from large Institutional Investors (i.e. Vanguard, BlackRock, Berkshire Hathaway) with a large minority stake. Firing even one of those members illegally would likely cause external investors in the company to sell their shares plummeting the stock price.

Hell of an episode, glad you guys are enjoying it. The deep fried songbird is a real thing from French cuisine. It's a specific kind of bird called Ortolan. Once caught, they're kept in the dark because their reaction to darkness is to gorge themselves on food. This is done until they're at about double their body weight, then the bird is drowned and marinated in brandy (specifically armagnac,) roasted, plucked and served. It's eaten whole, feet first and holding onto the head. To answer the bone question, the larger ones are spat out. The towel on the head thing is real and one of the theories about its origins is that it hides people spitting out the bones. Hunting the birds was outlawed in the EU in 1999.

@darcypenn67029 ай бұрын
To add to the ortolan discussion: it is said in Europe that it was eaten with the head covered to hide the shame or indeed hide one's sin from God, as the ortolan's song is so beautiful that it must be a sin to eat...more likely the head is covered to keep the aromas etc concentrated...
