Yeah, the domino effect of this vote is pretty incredible. Because Kendall isn't there, Roman folds to Logan's bullying. Because Roman appears weak, Lawrence plays it safe. Because the numbers aren't obviously in Kendall's favor anymore, Stewy backs out... and yeah, like others have pointed out, the only reason Kendall misses it is due to unforced errors: Ewan and Ilona wouldn't have attended the meeting if Kendall hadn't clued them both in that something was happening that day. No Ewan, and the vote swings to Kendall. No trip to see Ilona, and Kendall is in person. Just a comedy of errors all around when they had the killshot lined up.

Kendal missing the vote in person was the turning point. Had he been there, Roman would have taken his side, maybe even Stewy. That's why they had this terrorism sublot in the episode. Kendall had the votes, even secured Llona's one, but he ended up unlucky.

A little more background on that song “Which Side Are You On,” it was written during the bloody decade-long conflict known as the Harlan County War in Kentucky. The war was a struggle between mine workers and the mine owners (who had both private agents and the national guard on their side). The song was originally written by the wife of a union organizer after the sheriff and his men broke into her home at night to terrorize both her and her children. The most famous version of the song, performed by Pete Seeger, was recorded about a decade later. The Harlan County War and other labor conflicts in Appalachia are absolutely essential pieces of American history that we very rarely talk about in history classes and political discussion. Especially in this day and age, everyone should know about this dark chapter in this country’s history.

The only reason Kendall had to go to Ilona (and get stuck) was because he called her the night before making her suspicious, Ilona had no plans to call in until that call from Kendall. So had Kendall been more chill this whole situation would never have happened.

I don't think Kendall played all his cards right but in this case I think its only clear in hindsight. If he hadn't called to make sure Ilona isn't coming, he wouldn't have had to go and convince her, and could instead be at the meeting and likely sway Roman, if not Stewy too. And if he hadn't told Ewan, Ewan wouldn't have been at this board meeting. But in both cases, these are just examples of Kendall taking risks that didn't pay off. And he has to take risks if he's going to change anything. But yeah this one is a rough watch.

Also Kendall, Shiv, and Roman have the same mother and she's the second wife before Marcia. Connor's mother was Logan's first wife. Again, I'm sure y'all know this by now since you're ahead lmao. I still think Kendall should have listened to Frank and not rock the boat. It's really a comedy of errors with the vote. If he didn't miss the meeting and if he was in the room the vote would have gone through in Kendall's favor. Lawrence and Stewy would have voted in Kendall's favor and the only needed Lawrence OR Ewan.

The first episode showed us a few reasons why Kendall didn’t get the top position yet. And those little things also affected his vote of no confidence. He’s rash, takes risks without being prepared for all possible outcomes. But most importantly he hasn’t invested enough in his relationships. Logan has the POTUS on his side for crying out loud meanwhile Kendall is making frantic phone calls to board members who literally all saw through him. The CEO of this mega-corp needs to have presence even when they’re not in the room. It’s not a worthy excuse that he wasn’t physically there.

He should have gone with the plan and being there would have secured Roman’s vote as well as all the other votes they planned but lost to him not going with their plan. Why should I vote in favour of a guy that couldn’t even make it on time to the board meeting? That’s why he lost, he prioritised something that shouldn’t have been a priority, the same thing we see in ep 1 of the show and through the rest of the show.

The board vote fiasco was definitely Kendall's fault. He did not listen to advice. Frank literally told him not to call Ilona, but he did so anyway and handled it so poorly, he had to go in person the next day to do damage control, which gave him no margin for error in regard to potential delays on the trip to the office. He also failed to shore up Stewy's vote and simply assumed Stewy would vote with him. He screwed up.

Ultimately it was Kendall’s fault. If he never tells Ewan he doesn’t show up and never votes for Logan. If he doesn’t go to see Ilona he’s present at the meeting. Roman, Stewy and Lawrence all vote with him if he’s actually there and in Roman’s case can be the big brother and protect him from their dad.

*Regarding the black eye mystery* In interviews, the creator of the show explained that the idea behind the black eye was that Shiv "accidentally" elbows him in the eye the night before because he was too close to her in bed. There is actually a book with all the show scripts and that moment is in there. The scene was cut for time.

Kendall did not make the right moves. It’s not the universe fucking him, it’s him ignoring reality (shown by literally ignoring Stewy). Ewan kept his advice to Greg vague so that his decisions can’t be traced. Ewan voted for his brother ultimately because he believes in him even if he doesn’t respect what he does. Roman didn’t vote for his brother because he doesn’t believe in him and he fears his father.

Kendal fucked up by calling the other Chairholder. he shouod never have called her daughter, because it's obvious they had a thing, and he ruined it. She told her mom a lie and told her mom, which forced Kendal to go across state to plead. Forcing him to be late. If he nver got cold feet, and called her, she would never have tuned into the meeting; and he would have had Roman vote 100%, and if he was there, he'd have gotten Lawarences vote, due to Roman. Roman would have voted immedtily if Kendal was there. Kendal and Roman are cowards who cannot make an decision without a push, they are shaky, and never 100% on anything. which is why Kendal fails, and Roman hides behind his dads leg like a dog.

I don't think I've seen it discussed but, another element in this episode worth noting is the traffic, and crazed crowds in the end. It's implied (but not explicitly) that this happened during 9/11. Air traffic was shut down, cars were deadlocked, and people fleeing. All the while this weird bubble of wealth had bigger concerns. lol

Diegesis is best succession reactors imo, those gals are really well informed and have interesting discussions!
