Yes but I think this still has a lot to do with Tom. Shiv wanted Tom back before ”because it makes sense”. It is one thing that she seems to want and Tom was hesitent to say the least. Accepting Tom as a CEO and voting against her brother gave her the family that she wanted (and not wanted). But it is also true that she got really mad at her brother and she is probably honest when she says that she think he will not cut it. Also the brother left her out of them not wanting to go through with GoJo deaal. I think that is a serious betrayal for her and it is a lot of old stuff as well. But both those things matter her not being able to stand her brother and her will to have this family of three.

Exactly how I saw it too. I’m puzzled by all the folks who see Shiv’s decision as some sort of “self-sacrifice for Tom”. He was the lesser evil to stomach for her- she couldn’t bare to see Kendall sit in Logan’s chair and call the shots and seeing how easily he gave out power to Stewy, she realized how she would be quickly sidelined (a point made by director Mark Mylod in his newest Variety interview). If she couldn’t win, she had to make sure none of her siblings would either. There’s nothing selfless about Shiv’s character. Never has been.

Looking back Tom´ s biggest ammunition is that he is underestimated. He is still perceived as unthreatening, all while he already slit the throat of his own wife twice . Even here Shiv called him servile, but he proposed to go to jail coz he was playing the game and trying ot get the biggest player (Logan) on his side, which in the end he managed. Tom plays the servile clown, so he is allowed close to the big dogs, then he gatherts intel and waits for his opportunity...if you ask me, this is a better tactic to gain power than any of the kids had.

Tom won. When he extended the hand it was his way of asking “are you with ME?” For the first time in their relationship she will need him to stay relevant. And not the other way around. Shiv was reluctant to side with Kendall the day before. So her changing her mind was not surprising. And she was right, Kendall would be bad as CEO. The Roman scene is what gets to me. He acknowledges that he’s nothing, they’re all nothing without their dad. He looked like he was holding back tears saying it.

Macfadyen is at least half wrong though. Jesse Armstrong clearly tied together what it's about in two scenes. First we see her on the plane with Tom on the phone, asking him if they can make their relationship work. That goes full circle after she made him the "king" when they sit in the car and he gives her his answer "yes", by offering his hand. Shiv is vindicitive and felt she was sidelined by the brothers all along, and still she decided to make Ken CEO when she initially found out she got screwed by Mattson. That changed once she found out that the new CEO will be tom, which he tells her himself right before the board meeting. The scene where Ken is seen in his presumed new office and the way he displays added to that, but wasnt key, since again, she knew him for that all along. But as a total opportunist and in that regard, the "winner" of the siblings, she became the heir to her father. She is serious. She couldnt be CEO herself, she got ousted by Mattson and her brothers, but for her it's preferable to be the wife of the CEO who happens to be father to her unborn child. She chose herself and her own family over her prior family, also something her father would have done, and also something her mother would have done. She isnt any different from Ken, but if she couldnt have the crown herself, at least Ken isnt getting it either.

Macfadyen's take on Shiv's logic is interesting--and different than the episode implied. At least partially: She doesn't believe in Kendall, AND she still has a shot to stay with Tom. It can be both. In fact, unless Tom dumps her, it is both. Take Tom out of the equation--would she have voted the same way (against Kendall) if the CEO were to be Gerri or Lawrence? Kinda doubt it.

It took me a while to process the ending of this show. Because she effectively worked outside the company, Shiv was never going to be CEO. Voting for the deal blocks Kendall and Roman and as the wife of the CEO she still gets access to the trappings of office; the planes, the parties, the meetings with heads of state. She didn't "win" but she finishes ahead of her brothers who simply walk away with no voice in GoJoWaystarRoyco.

This is what I absolutely love about the ending, how ambiguous it is. Shiv definitely came out on top, but from her perspective she's now doomed to become her mother, subservient to a powerful man. All these children lack is perspective, because their father was incapable of providing it for them. So many ways to interpret the ending and gauge how the rest of their lives might go.

According to show logic Mattson can name and fire a CEO without even asking the board, so Tom might be gone the day after for all we know. Shiv changing her mind started that morning, when she and her mother had a moment looking in each others' eyes when hugging and saying goodbye in Barbados. Something about turning into her mother may have seeded in her mind, rising doubts. Then, seeing Kendall's arrogance emerge, sitting in their father's chair and putting his feet on the desk and acting like he already won gave her a good look at what the future would be. I really don’t believe Tom had any sort of long-term Machiavellian strategy, he kind of just kept his options open and fell into the position. He just happened to have the right skills and he showed under Logan multiple times that he was willing to take the fall for the company. What?? This is how men get their feelings hurt. Give Shiv credit! Her brothers, her father and sometimes her husband talk AT her, not to her. She thought it through. She made an agreement to sell Waystar (her brothers were all in on the plane home from Sweden) which is why she got the higher share price from Matsson. Her father wanted the company sold; her Mother told them all that the company should be sold. Yes, she thought that she was going to get a title out of it, but it did not work out, but she stuck to her agreement. Her brothers went behind her back to keep the company, remember Gerri to Kendall that the company had $3 Billion in debt. Keep the company on sentiment? Whose?? Since Kendall and Roman are businessmen, they can start again. Since everyone says that Shiv is not, her husband certainly figured out the corporate game, so logic says get in the car with him (it's obvious she was in the bed with him).

​@@annkey4091 She became hysterical when Tom told her that he was possibly going to be appointed CEO, then, she betrayed her family live during a board meeting vote and she made Kendall drink her own spit for nothing. She is unhinged and overly emotional because she is pregnant, so she has mood swings, like cats or dogs acting irrationally around the gestation period. She knows she can't have the big seat so she just wants to break daddy's toy, like this business she had with the democrat candidate attacking his dad, that was ridiculous. In conclusion, she doesn't need or care about ATN or Waystar anymore because she is going to have a baby anyway.

@@alainportant6412 Look! Logic kicked in the end. When you are a woman, you go with the best offer. At least she didn't "betray" her brothers behind their back (usual MO for this family). Her brothers offered her nothing, zip, zero! Face it, when you are a woman, you get offered a hard time and/or a hard . . . not necessarily in that order. Shiv holding on to Waystar would benefit who?? Certainly not herself, but it would benefit Kendall's ego. Look, Roman gave her the opening when he hesitated during his vote. If she was thinking all long about changing her vote, Roman gave her the opening. Her family is her baby and its father, not her brothers. Her brothers became high strung ("unhinged and overly emotional" to quote you) and went to fisticuffs and wrestling on the floor. As I said, keeping Waystar would benefit who? As for the spit, Kendall is a grown man. He did not have to drink the concoction, but his ego and his possible future king role, told him to play tough and drink it. On another point, Daddy (Logan) told the three of them to build their own toy. They now have the money to do it without him looking over their shoulder. As I said, Shiv was rational about her decision. Like you said, she is going to have a baby, and the hired CEO, her husband Tom, is delighted and don't think that he is not. When Roy dynasty ends, there is the possibility of a new one --- Wambsgans.
