Yea I think my most complimented fragrance of all time is Whiskey 1969 by Thin Wild Mercury. I use that and a couple other niche fragrances for my staples and then use some designer fragrances that I like like DG the One or Light Blue, YSL Y Parfum (got it as a gift with custom monogram on my bottle) or Cuir as my fillers in case I want to switch up the vibe a little bit.

Somehow Succession has become today's poster child for "quiet luxury" and the "old money" aesthetic. But anyone who paid attention to the show would know that Logan Roy was born poor and built his empire from nothing. First generation wealth. That is the definition of "new money."

It's worth nothing Jantelagen is not a popular ideal--it was, after all, originally satire--stating that someone can never be better, smarter, more skilled, etc., than how they were born, and is frequently criticized. You see a similar mindset in some poor communities in the American south ("geting above your raising") which leads to certain groups ostracizing successful individuals and discouraging any kind of hard work or social mobility. This is the complete opposite of, say, many Asian immigrant communities, where it's encouraged for children to become more educated and wealthier than their parents.

It’s not just about the generational aspect. You are overlooking the fact that these aren’t some run of the mill nouveau-rich types, they are one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the world (in the show they are based on the Murdoch family.) Because they are so well known and in the public eye, it would be considered gauche and quite absurd to appear ostentatiously dressed, as it would imply a serious lack of concern regarding upholding the family’s image of status and professionalism.

It is true that films and TV shows will use clothing as a “language” to get across a certain feeling/vibe about a character. They have been doing this for a long time. A good costume designer will do this. Why he/she will need to know the scene. Is it a scene with tension? Comedy? Sadness? Violence? Etc. Also the color of that clothing plays a big part. Huge part. To help with the mood of that scene. Character.

They're off the scale😂imagine you want to buy some clothes for what it is to you paying 0.000000075% of your net worth (3,000 divided by 40 billion). Would you choose a certain shop or a brand just for the sake of getting into an empty place where you feel comfortable and have a more pleasant buying experience and get a high quality item? I would. Why any hassle for buying anything (queues and masses surrounding coming at you -they're famous-) when I can just get something really good and a good time for what it is nearly nothing to me?

There's Quiet Luxury and there is obvious luxury. In some professions you have to look rich. Impressing people is part of the job. This is where MAD MEN beats SUCCESSION
@am143-g1m
@am143-g1m 7 ай бұрын
Truly wealthy people don’t even wear these “quiet luxury” brands as Succession suggests. There is no “formula” or “rule” and rich people don’t buy things always because they are expensive. They buy it because they like it or need it. Truly rich people also buy "normal" brands like Lacoste, Levi's, Rayban, Pantagonia, Ralph Lauren, etc etc... and they also buy very well-known luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci etc etc... This is all marketing and people still believe it that truly rich people will spend $600 for a cap... If the truly rich need a cap, they buy a good cap from any common sports brand! Truly rich people are not stupid! And even though there are some very rich people buying $600 caps, they are not the majority. As I said, there is no rule or uniform that all rich people use to be understood as rich. People spend their money in different ways and it’s not always on fashion. Truly rich people actually go bespoke or to a tailor when they need more formal clothes and they dress casual with all type of brands with all types of prices (high and low). They don´t think this way like the "quiet luxury" trend wants us to believe!

I prefer it to the maximalist “creative types” or nepotism babies. While I might also argue that the Roy’s aren’t truly old money in the truest Old Money sense

You could perceive the quality of the attire in almost every scene. The baseball cap thing is a bit weird, tho. Sadly they did not care much about the pens and stationery.

Became a fan of JMM frames many years ago (Jeff Goldblum's iconic frames). Seeing them on Jeremy Strong's character, Kendall Roy, further validates the timeless style. Spendy but worth it.

I challenge the assertion that "You need a lot of money to dress in the quiet luxury style" Actually you do not-you need to know how to identify luxury fabrics and quality construction along with the basic styles (such as blazer, pants, skirt, shirt, etc) to make up your wardrobe. Then I go to resale, thrift or charity stores and buy -for instance-cashmere sweaters for pennies on the dollar. I recently bought a stunning quality cashmere sweater set for *gasp* $25 (and benefitted the charity shop too). Take your finds to a tailor if needed and have them fitted if that's needed. Less expensive and way more green than poor quality clothes made in China, and you'll look like you came from generational wealth.

7:03 I can assure you most of this brands are similar in quality to H&M and Zara. Nowadays if you want quality items you have to go to tailors or good boutiques. Most rich people buy the more expensive item of clothing is because they have the money and don't mind spending it.

I remember when I re-watched the 1st episode after finishing the show... at that time I got into watches so I was learning about the existing brands. On the 1st episode I totally overlooked the watch Tom buys for Logan for his birthday... It was a Patek Philippe! When I heard they mentioned it on the episode I was like damn... that's an expensive watch. Funny enough when Tom gives the watch to Logan he just takes a quick glance at it and puts it away... at the end of the episode you can see the watch plays a cool role in it as it was gifted to the boy that lost the game 😆 I just felt good for recognizing the brand... and understanding the economical status of where these guys are.

The Roys are definitely new money as their wealth isn’t multi-generational, you can see the distinct differences between them and the Pierce family who are actual old money. One of the subplots is how Logan has been rejected by the old money establishment regardless of his wealth, them wearing quiet luxury is intentional and a way to try an “fit in”, Lucas is the opposite of that somewhat embracing his new money status even though he too is trying to to craft an image

Showing no logos is the best thing. It’s opposite what the Chinese want. They are always wanting to show the logos so they can show off to their friends and family that they have some money. I lived in Asia and saw this constantly. I even saw one guy still wearing a stitched on temp logo of a suit on the outside of his jacket sleeve. I told him that it should be cut off he immediately said “NO”. That he wanted his friends and relatives to see that. To give everyone the impression that he had some money. Even though it looked odd to leave it on the jacket sleeve. That’s why I think most people buy these expensive pieces so they can then show off that designer label. It’s ALL about the label. The name. Crazy.
