My session is tomorrow and this came up *just* as I was prepping an encounter with some incubi - my players are looking for a missing person who's being held hostage in a fancy club that's actually a shrine to Graz'zt. (The owner is a noble lamia who's going to send the incubi to the PCs in disguise as a means of distraction/dealing with them quietly.) Thanks for the refresher!

I plan to use an incubi for my next one-shot as a BBEG, but I intent to have a twist ending that the players won't be able to simply 'punch' their way out of. Why an incubi, because everyone wants to use a Stra- I mean, vampire. That's played out. This video was very helpful, thank you.

I think there's some precedent for them being in both the hells and the abyss for awhile. I remember in 3.5 some succubi had defected to Asmodeus's side. I'm also a fan of the new split species approach

I like to play high risk high reward knife twisting with the party by making succubi (and incubi) tameable. It’s a ridiculously difficult ritual, but when it’s done, the succubus is under the PCs indirect control for as long as the PC wants (potentially forever). The rewards are great: First off, the fiend becomes harmless to its master, and this taming also replaces/inverts the Draining Kiss with/into a custom ability: Restoring Kiss, which inflicts hp regeneration to the PC in question. Also a tamed succubus/incubus cannot under any circumstance retreat to the Lower Planes.

Because some Demon Lords and Archdevils enjoy sex as a past time? I also seem to remember that a few of the Succubi queens have, or have had, relationships with some major power players from both planes. They make good concubines and good spies too.

I think devillish succubi are synonymous with the Pleasure Devils or the Brachadia. Very similar concept. Though Pleasure Devils tend to target clerics and paladins. Powers are very similar too, though pleasure devils don’t have a draining kiss

Can you guys do an episode explaining the difference between the realms? I do not know the difference between a Dragonlance and a Ravenloft. Eberron? No idea. Just to clarify, I’ve unfortunately never played even though I’ve had interest in DND for years. I even bought a 3.5 players handbook and dice when 3.5 came out, but never got to use it. I continue to dabble for the lore.

The different settings are just the official worlds that are published that DMs can set their stories in or plunder for the stuff they like for homebrew settings. Each has its own history, pantheon, and mechanics (especially in previous editions) Ravenloft is a weird one, as it is not just one world. Ravenloft as a setting is made up of hundred of demiplanes that each are the domain/prison of a dark and terrible ruler. Official worlds that I know of and a brief overview of the tone of each that I can actually talk about. Forgotten Realms: set on the planet Toril, HUGE pantheon, baseline D&D setting for 5e. You'll find the majority of published novels and adventures set here. High Fantasy in Faerun, but other continents have different feels (Kara-Tur for oriental, Zakhara for Arabian Nights, Maztica for ancient americas) Greyhawk: Set on the planet Oerth, The original primary setting for D&D, created mostly by Gary Gygax. Most details are about one continent, and focused alot on territory around city of Greyhawk. More Gritty Fantasy feel. Dragonlance: I unfortunately don't know much about the setting as a whole other than there are a lot of wars. Eberron: Set on the Planet Eberron, Setting introduced in 3.0, Less super powerful NPCs, but magic is widespread to the point of being the settings basic technology. Setting info is mostly one continent, divided into five nations who mostly hate each other, but they just finished a 100 year long war. A lot of the less common races have wildly different cultures than your standard fantasy world (example: jungle halfling cannibals who ride dinosaurs). Pulp Fantasy with flair of noir and intrigue Dark Sun: Set on world of Athas, this world is dying and is mostly desert. Ruled by terrible sorcerer kings who are the cause of the planet's state. Arcane magic is likely to get you attacked by angry people. Most things are psionic and want to eat you. It is very mad max esque. Ravnica: The newest official setting, pulled from Magic: The Gathering. Planet-wide City (Think fantasy Coruscant from Star Wars.) There are 10 guilds who rule the planet, with half the population belonging to a guild. Even though the city is very large, there is still plenty of spaces for normal D&D exploration and dungeon delving to occur. Tone is probably very intrigue heavy but can be anything, with a lot of potential story hooks depending on which guilds the characters belong to. Planescape: It used to be its own separate thing, but has been merged into the meta universe of the majority of D&D worlds. you can explore all the various plane of existence which are governed by philosophy and alignment. Spelljammer: similar deal to planescape, but think of it as magic powered spaceships and cosmic exploration. this allows you to go from one planet setting to another.
