She almost didn't release this song, with how personal it was for her. It's a good thing she did, though. An amazing song about passing up her friends and inspirations in the underground rap community, and how many weren't happy for her. She did a lyric breakdown on one of her streams, and was crying as she explained it.

Calli first went to Japan and tried to make it as a rapper in the small "underground rap" community that inspired her. These musicians tended to play smaller venues, like bars. In the lockdowns with Covid, all those locations had to shut down (many to never reopen, one of the meanings behind the line "ladder fell and shattered all the bars that we had played"). Some of her old friends and inspirations also decided to give up on the scene at that time. Covid lockdowns was also the time in which Calli debuted, and immediately exploded in popularity. She was doing concerts, making albums, even (likely) in talks with UMG about signing to them at the time this song was released. She, overnight, surpassed the success of all the very bands that inspired her in the first place. This did not go over well for some in that group, and Calli herself has often struggled with feelings of inadequacy around this. This song is about her recollecting about those times. Even though she has now "made it" in the way they always dreamed about, a part of her still misses those simpler times struggling to get by with her old crowd.

Someone else will probably give better details but the song is essentially about how she got her start VTubing. She did indie rap in Japan but it basically got stopped during Covid. She got the opportunity to try out for Hololive and got big through it. But not everyone from her old life was supportive and some saw it as selling out. So it's kinda like about leaving her old life behind to pursue her new opportunities.

This is Callie at her most vulnerable and raw. This and Cursed Night are some of her most impactful songs. Initially Callie has a biased opinion of the idol industry before she started rapping in Japan but over time she realized that they worked just as hard as anyone in the music industry. When Callie signed up for Hololive EN, she did it as a joke thinking that she would not get chosen, she didn't tell her friends about it and you can imagine how that turned out. When she was doing a lyrical breakdown of the song you could hear her crying when she explained that her friends were now seeing her as a villain because she "Sold Out" to Hololive.

A rendition of this song that blew me away not too long ago was a concert performance of it by three of Calli's gen-mates, Ina, Gura and Ame. The three of them sat on a circular stage, facing away from each other, singing into the ether as if drifting in their own thoughts. Having the three of them sing together meant that the other two could sing the harmonies this song has for just about every part. Hearing this already extremely emotional song in such a beautiful yet eerie way just broke me while watching the concert, and I can't count how often I've listened to it since. Gura who puts so much emotion into her singing, Ame who has improved so much over the time she spent in Hololive, and Ina whose voice shines in calm and contemplative songs like this, all in a similar range... It just works so well...

Before Covid, she lived in Japan and was a part of the Japanese Underground Rap scene. When covid hit, she took the advice of a friend and got into Hololive and boomed there. All those friends she made in the underground rap had to go back to 9-5s and some felt some betrayal from her continuing to go on and make it, and she felt like they abandoned her in their hateful comments and just wanted them to be proud of her for making it. And this is just a vague cut down description of the meaning behind it all.

Calli has a naturally husky voice for a woman, and this song really showcases what she’s capable of doing with that gift.

Lose-Lose Days - an older song of hers that recently got a animated MV, similar to this one as it's about her start in VTubing but more upbeat and positive. Midnight Mayoi - Featuring Kobo its a chill lofi song Q - Duet with Gura

This song is still one of my favorite songs Calli has released because it is so personal, she even talked about on stream that she thought about not actually releasing it because it was such a personal song which makes sense but glad she chose to let it out anyway. The basic gist of this song is that the first verse is Calli thinking about an alternate version of herself that made a different choice and didn't become a member of Hololive that's why she calls her the me I could never befriend, she is saying that her experiences up to that point if she had continued down that path she doesn't think that Mori Calliope could relate enough to her to be friends so the way I always have read the song that part is important because it seems like the we she sings about in the chorus is her and her that other Mori and the hey thanks for saving my life is her wanting to voice that to the persona Mori Calliope. The second verse is especially where it gets real emotional as that verse looks into the mind of current Mori who obviously is very happy and successful, but she remembers her struggles getting there being part of the underground rap scene in japan and having people she looked up to as heroes that when the pandemic happened were all forced to stop pursuing their dreams of becoming musicians when all the bars that they were performing at were forced to be closed so they had to fall back on more traditional forms of work and some never came back after things returned to normal, plus she laments how some of those people she looked up to perhaps may have been jealous of her success after joining Hololive and becoming a successful musician through it she even broke down on the stream talking about the song saying she wished some of those heroes would say that they were proud of her and those feelings is why she calls herself Mori Calliope, the grim reaper, a villain in the song because in some way she feels like she is one to them, but then she also does realize that she is blessed to be successful which is why she is hard on herself in the line after that saying she shouldn't feel pity, but she is human so we all feel emotions and shouldn't have to hide them which is why I think this song was a very necessary song for her to write and release because in a way since it is so personal and emotional it is a way to let herself feel the emotions she tries to hide which is something she needed to do to make some peace with those emotions eventually if ever. I'd highly recommend watching the highlight of the stream where she talks about this song because it is a good watch and makes the song hit so much harder as well.

Still one of my favourite songs of her, and one of the most profound and emotional ones. I've always interpreted it as a autobiography sort of thing. It's a bit of "if you know, you know" situation... but long story short: Hololive helped her grow FAST.

Short explanation this song is about her career pre covid. Basically she was a street rapper, made a ton of friends, well covid hit, the "ladder fell, closed every bar" and she was forced to become an English teacher, so she tried out for hololive, made it, just for all her friends to call her a sellout, and worse.

My recommendation is for Left for Dead Lullaby, one of the most richly symphonic songs Calli has ever done, while still having that hard-hitting personal anecdote feeling, and not losing the sound of being a lullaby. It deserves so much more attention than it has ever gotten.

Yeah, this is Calli's song that was almost never released, telling us who she is, where she came from and what her worries and hopes are. I actually think that there's a funny pattern that these kind of songs by hololive talents tend to become the (imo) best work they ever made. Calli's End of Life, Suisei's Stellar Stellar and especially Mumei's mumei. Many others have already explained it in the comments, so i don't have to but i still wanted to thank you for the reaction. Also, if you want to listen to an alternate version of this song that is also fantastic, Ame, Gura and Ina sang this song together for Myth4Ever. I'd recommend checking it out :)

Some specilation on my part about how this song fits in with what was going on with her past life around the same time: I've always held on to the idea that the title could also have been an allusion to her consodering whether to continue her activities under has past life. Right around the time this came put she did her first stream on her past life since she joined hololive, and she implied during that stream that she had been considering whether or not to continue using that persona. I get the feeling from the way she talked about things at that time that she had very seriously considered abandoning her past life, potentially having made the decision only to go back on it at a later date. Personally what O think happened was that she wrote "End of a Life" with the idea of abandoning jer past life, and then ended up going back on the decision, burying that song for a while, and then after writing the EP she decided to release both around the same time. Of course, this is all speculation and will probably never have evidence one way or another.

So a bit of a fun fact I found as a newer fan of Hololive, “Excuse my rudeness but please R.I.P” was a song she half wrote as a joke not putting a whole lot of thought into it, but this song, this is her emotion, her heart, her imposter syndrome, put on FULL display, every line, every pitch and tone of her voice and words personal in meaning for this song.

to build on the already amazing and informative comments: Calli had a public after party stream talking about this song and the lyrics and meanings behind it. im going to paraphrase what i remember "When the ladder fell and shattered every bar that we had played Does it matter in the end the sound diminished and decayed And your friends grew tired of fantasy? You’re wishing they had stayed? You don’t get to say “I miss you” You watched your heroes fade Into the rear view-mirror of the villain you portrayed Stop the pity party, listen, you don’t get to be dismayed You don’t get to be emotional, feel blessed you got it made These the best of years of life because you chose to make a trade" This entire section talks about a large potion of this song honestly. Calli moved to japan to join her rolemodels and dream rappers , she rapped on the circuit and then covid hit. The bars and venues closed, so some of her circle quit and went back to office work and stuff Calli watched her heroes quit and fade from memory while she was the "villian" because they all called her a sellout for joining hololive. She wanted them to say "you did good kid" but instead they just flamed her for making a choice to continue with music through vtubing. And thus she gets to live her dream, the best years of her musical life because she made the trade and signed up with Holo
