Tumbbad - Themes, motifs, and every fan theory I've ever had.
It is I, Sucharita Tyagi along with Anand Gandhi, as we continue to discuss the latter’s filmography.
Part 1 here - • The Cinematic Universe...
Tumbbad is written and directed by Rahi Anil Barve. Anand Gandhi is credited as co-writer, executive producer and creative director on the film.
In Part 2 of our two-part discussion, this is what you can hope to find -
0:00 - My lame attempt at a soundscape lol
1:00 - The use of rain in #Tumbbad and Ship Of Theseus
3:01 - Circle of Life - Mohammed Samad’s casting as both Pandurang and Daadi
5:27 - 'Future of non-predatory life’/’the cycle of predation’.
7:07 - 'Themes’ found in horror stories
8:11 - Sukesha broke Hastar’s curse? If so, how?
9:53 - Pointlessness of mindless consumerism
12:09 - The three ‘Sarkars’
12:28 - An Oedipal theme? (Anand disagrees with Freud’s description)
15:04 - Why we invent Gods.
18:06 - Stockholm Syndrome
18:56 - Enfante Terrible. Why children in horror?
21:31 - Liberal use of Opium as a motif.
23:41 - A stolen prop!
24:30 - WHY DID TUMBBAD BEGIN IN 1918? (The Spanish Flu Pandemic theory will blow.your.mind)
26:36 - A deleted scene.
27:55 - The death of Sadashiv, Vinayak’s green eyes, Vinayak and Sukesha’s twin daughters
30:08 - Trailer for board game Shasn - Directed by György Pálfi
33:16 - I misspell ‘couldn’t’. What to do.
Thank you for watching Part 1, and thanks for all the new subscriptions. Lockdown mein koi kaam ya kamaayi nahi hai aajkal, toh kuch toh karna thaa, isliye channel shuru kar diya. Aa jaao saath mein, bohot kuch abhi baat karney ko baaki hai.

Honestly till today I have consumed movie as a entertainment factor and never had a single idea that films have soo much deep meaning, everything we see frame by frame has soo many discussed meanings, Easter eggs, theories.. It's just mind blowing. Thanks for inspiring me... I will try to explore and see movies in more of finding these deeper meanings....Respect sucharita and Anand Gandhi...

@@SucharitaTyagi Yeah, right? There is so much meaning that is packed into some movies that we fail to understand because of excess and easy availability of movies. But, there's this thought roaming around in my head that the brain "Invents" some of the meaning. Like we do a job and for the justification of it, we invent a meaning that wasn't there before. Maybe we did the job for a completely different reason before but now, after doing the job, we see a whole new meaning in it. Maybe that's the case here too. Sure, a lot of thought process goes into making films but I am just saying that a lot of intellectualization also occurs afterwards when there are questions you need to answer.

This was a profound conversation. I remember watching the Ship of Theseus trailer as a grad student in US and being blown away by it’s beauty. Happened to be in Mumbai the week it came out and watched it in a theater. Was an immensely rewarding cinematic experience. Since then, have been following Anand’s work closely and have come to expect nothing but wonderful things from him. And Tumbbad did not disappoint. It has only raised expectations. No pressure, Anand. But eagerly waiting for whatever you do next. :) And thank you for doing this, Sucharita!

Tumbbad as Critique of Brahmanism and Capitalism What is called literary criticism or film criticism is not a way of explaining or classifying things, but a way of extending them and making them resonate differently. - Ranciere Some closed the door: Others found it closed against them. Hastar is caste! I first came to know about the movie 'Tumbbad' through a poster, which didn't captivated me because the main characters appeared to be brahmins. Prejudice! Later I decided to watch the movie after knowing that the creative director of the same was Anand Gandhi, who might have something interesting to express. Curiosity! More than the technique and the horror (may be, it is more than horror, or the movie tries to trace the genealogy of horror; what makes us scary? Why are we not scared of caste, greed?), I followed the context of the movie. Interesting. Some days back I read a review written by a friend who says that a feminist reading of the movie is also possible. It is very evident in the cinema. And that made me to write about the movie. Reaction! Extension! The movie revolves around a Hindu mythology surrounding Hastar, first child (god) among the 160 million children (gods) of the Goddess of prosperity, the symbol of unlimited gold and food. He wanted all of Goddess's gold and food, after managed to get the gold, just as he went for the food, all the other gods attacked him. With every blow, he shattered into fragments. But before he could dissolve into stardust, the goddess saved him, on the condition that he will never be worshipped and be forgotten for ever. Was he forgotten? (The rest is too long....)

Can we send the movie to Oscars after the next years of release???
@vaibhawsingh01
@vaibhawsingh01 4 жыл бұрын
Why are Indians so obsessed with Oscars? Oscar is not a benchmark for a film to be great. Alfred Hitchcock didn't will a single Oscar. And he's considered one of the greatest ever.
@god1770
@god1770 3 жыл бұрын
@@vaibhawsingh01 i don't know about the other person, but to me, Winning an Oscar or even getting nominated, is indeed important but in a completely different context. We need to represent the better half of our Filmmaking industry. For years, India has built its image as this ridiculously, mass producing nonsensical action packed box office jugglers, or colours and Raibows with dance number to the rest of the world, which is a huge loss in my opinion. Bollywood, or going deeper, as the indian film industry is almost as old as Hollywood or any other fil industry across the world, but the cliches to our names have stuck on for a long time now, and the rest of the world doesn't try to rethink and take another look at the ways our industry has evolved and explored different genres and technicalities of shooting a film. Being nominated to the Oscars is important for the pride we deserve. Just look at Korea, a few years back it was only a part of the Asian Popular culture, and didn't have it's own individuality as this giant filmmaking industry in the eyes of the mainstream audience (except for some)...but now it's considered one of the best there is presently running because Parasite just won the best Picture. People have finally started to realise how greatly experimental Korea is in scripts and materials. And I think we deserve that too, there are films coming from our country that can go toe to toe with almost any other foreign film in terms of technicality and material. It's not about Validation, it's about recognition.

Very insightful conversation, once again, after the promise of part one. I had a suggestion: It would be really interesting to approach and understand Tumbbad from the eyes of Rahi Anil Barve, a peek into the mind that originally created that world. Similar to this conversation, where you had theories and discussed motifs, to have Rahi share his take on those can give us, the audience, another entry point to access the film. Also, since Rahi has lived and developed the idea for so long, I believe, he will have many more stories of the many versions of Tumbbad that were, before the one we saw. Perhaps an overdose of Tumbbad, but we all love that movie too much to stop knowing more about it. As I was listening through this conversation, I couldn't help but wonder about Rahi's journey with evolution of the film. This is off course, depending on how it aligns with your priorities but it will be super awesome as a follow up to these exhilarating two parts, punctuated with your expressions of 'mindblown'. Thank you!

If you want deep profound layers and themes it is Tumbbad for me. Tumbaad has layers that run deeper than the womb of the goddess... Let me explain. You will be rewarded. 1. Demi god Hastar has the gold and stays inside earth's womb because gold lies deep within the earth and it's rare and precious. But grains and crops grow above earth. Hastar is forbidden to touch food because food can be shared to satisfy all the people's need. But gold doesn't get shared... it is accumulated... it creates something worse than need... it creates greed. That is why when Hastar was born, he didn't go straight for the grain at first. He could have taken the grain for himself before gold, but he first lept at the gold. This shows his inherent greedy nature. 2. In Tumbaad, risk taking nature is required along with greed. Hastar took the risk against his billions of siblings, Grandma took the risk, and then Vinayak and Pandurang too. But Sarkar (the old man who fathered Vinayak) wasn't courageous. He died pennyless with only 1 gold coin in the hand of the baby Hastar statue. The monster Grandma doesn't tell Sarkar about the treasure. But when boy Vinayak and grown up Vinayak asks her about it, she detects his inherent greediness and risk taking nature within him. That's why she tells him about the secret treasure in return for her liberation from her curse. She never tells about the treasure to her own son - Sarkar because Sarkar was timid and had consumed all the gold she had earned. 3. Indian independence is not merely a narrative device, among the many it is also a metaphor for young India (boy pandurang) achieving freedom from age old Colonial greed (burning his father and thus breaking the ancestral curse of greediness that runs in Gradma, Vinayak and Pandurang). 4. The Grandma tries to eat boy Vinayak because she cannot touch the grain (as Hastar's curse spreads through his bite as well). She needs to be fed just like how Hastar needs dough dolls as offering .... She becomes a literal monster always hungry to eat, because even metaphorically also when you are greedy it would drift you away from your humanity. Hence when boy Vinayak is covered with flour alone in the kitchen mishap, she doesn't touch him directly but locks his ankle with her chain and drags him over to her room and fixes him to the bed to unscrew her nailed mouth (which is shut so that she would not bite people) and when she was about to eat him Vinayak remembers the phrase to threaten her with Hastar's name. Her Greed is so much that she cannot die on her own and when Vinayak and his mother leaves the cottage she obtains sustenance from soil by becoming a tree!!! Imagine the greed. ... A few more metaphors --- 1. Dialogue in the film - "Sarkar poori zindagi dhundta raha par use kucch nahi mila" - Sarkar, the old man, tried searching everywhere, for all his life but couldn't find anything. Change the gender. "Sarkar poori zindagi *dhundti* rahi par use kucch nahi mila." - Government tried to search everywhere the whole time but didn't find anything. Tax evasion and black money - difficult to find due to greed of the rich people and the currupt. 2. Dialogue - "Baki Devon ne uspe waar karn shuru kiya ... Poorti ke Devi ne use apni kokh mein sama liya" - The gods started attacking Hastar and hence the goddess of fulfillment kept him in her womb. Explains why Hastar has a wounded, blood red, unborn body. Also he is depicted as a malnourished skeletal demon because he is hungry since ages because he cannot eat grain. Remember Hastar's statues (shown twice in the film) are like a plump baby but the actual demon in the womb has a grown up sickly body due to ages of malnourishment. 3. Hastar has gold coins that flow out of his loincloth from his backside between his buttocks. Does that signify something? Generally old age Indians kept their money in the front of their loincloth so that it's easy to take out. So why Hastar's gold is flowing out of his backside like that? Because it's a analogy for an unborn baby that is so hungry it greedily eats and poops from its diper. The coins coming out of backside of Hastar's loincloth is literally him pooping the gold out while eating the dough dolls. No wonder they are insidious. 4. Why Hastar multiplies? When gods attacked Hastar he was split into particles. To save him the mother goddess took him back to her womb in his destroyed form (millions of particles). So there are many elemental Hastars in her womb, each hungry of food. That's why they appear as per the proportion of the food offered. Greed is infinite. So Hastar is numberless and insatiable. Deep enough for a layered film?

Sometimes the movies in "Bollywood" are so shallow, like characters are just crammed in, without any reason... Same thing has probably crept into our mind as audiences (atleast crept in my mind) that I never thought there would be any reason for character of Sadashiv, the twins, metaphoric meaning of opium or the lack of population in the village.. Mereko laga ki aise hi daala hoga script me spook effect k liye (or extras ka kharcha bachane k liye)... But there is meaning behind every single detail (even the colour of protagonist's goddamn eyes which I obviously failed to notice..) Such thorough work is done behind the scenes by these guys... hats off... Hope the fandom of this movie increases with time and it gets the due appreciation/recognition it deserves (by masses)...

Sucharita...OMG. This was way better than my film school's online classes. Not kidding. Please keep doing such stuff. More power to you. This kind of reading really helps us to understand and reflect better at the content we consume. Thanks for this. I wish you continue with this format. Kudos to you. -Love from an enthusiast.

This is a great discussion and u guys have discussed ll the parts of the movie..but i really wanted to know a part of the story which wasnt shown in the movie..i wish u have asked him that..its the part when vinayaks mom come home after burying his brother and leaves the village with vinayak..she had a big scar on her face and she was traumatized on the boart as if she has seen hastar..so what happened?! did she kill the sarkar? and during doing it she got the scar? or she went inside the womb and saw hastar and somehow escaped.. aahhh i really wish u asked that..i know its nothing big or educational but i really wanted to know that part haha...
