A very effective shifting exercise for the violin or viola (and other strings). Single finger shifts establish a strong base for understanding the fingerboard and how the left hand frame adjusts in different positions. Practicing single-finger shifts by chromatically increasing intervals trains the ear and builds a strong connection between aural skills and physical motions. This warmup covers small and large shifts, covering 1st through 8th positions (or beyond, if you so choose) in a very short time. Advanced violinists and violists can also try this shifting exercise in octaves for an extra challenge. Remember: Hear it before you play it!
