What are overtones?
@Violinna
@Violinna 3 күн бұрын
The overtone series is generally based on harmonics that vibrate above a fundamental pitch, and even if they're not necessarily "heard" they affect the resonance or timbre of a tone. There is a whole science to it...I'm sure there are great videos on KZbin on this topic. =)

I do not have a smart phone nor do I carry the one I have when out. It is always a physical score that I carry and use my arm to play my cello and now my student viola. I watched a music student on the bus, who spent more time watching yt and playing games...must be a virtuoso or a violist who only needs five minutes practice per day...🌹

I have recently begun to learn to play the viola BUT damaged two tendons in my left hand (non musical injury) and have after 18 weeks of playing 1st position on my cello, re-started with the viola. I will be away from my cello for three weeks but will take my viola and your lesson with me. Thank you for your time. 🌹🍵

actually I practise way more in my travels than in my house because i travel a lot to all my students houses for the lessons. i use the phone as the violin, each finger in each imaginary handshape position and in each imaginary strings, and in lower and upper positions too, with the thumb resting in the side like a real violin xD and the right hand, holding the phonem is doing each bowing faithfully with the hand movements (but at the same time very subtle because the phone can't shake too much or i can't read the sheets). and with this i conquered entire books, just fixing something here and there in the actual violin later.

I have a problem with my little finger. When I do a Colle, it slips off the bow, and then I lose control of the bow because the bow is not balanced. I don't know what to do to make my little finger more stable on the bow. Is the bow too heavy? Should I hold it a little higher (upward from the frog) to reduce the strain on my little finger?

I went restless for about 7 years. Bad idea, for me. Chronic neck issues, chronic headaches, especially after waking up the next morning, and worst of all? Massive hand problems, and finger joint problems, especially in my index finger from holding the stupid thing up all the time. I also developed a really deep hold over time to avoid pressing against that sore index finger joint on the side.I’m not saying that going restless won’t work for you, but be careful and don’t be stubborn, like I was. Oh, also, I used every kind of chin rest you can imagine, even ones that I made myself.
@Violinna
@Violinna Ай бұрын
Usually when not using a shoulder rest, the instrument rests more on the thumb - NOT the index finger. The base of the index finger makes contact with the neck, but the thumb is the primary supporter, in addition to the collarbone, of course. Basically, imagine the collarbone and thumb are pillars and the violin is a bridge.

Great video. Thank you. Picked up the violin again after 50 years. Played in school orchestra and played along mariachi uncles. Purchased a new violin and it came with a shoulder rest and just could not get used to it no matter how i placed it. So I continue my violin experience with no shoulder rest.

Inochka, do you play with or without? Adam is learning without b/c shoulder rests falling off agitated him & Gregory believes in playing without & it being unnecessary. However, I'm starting to wonder if to try shoulder rest again for him, b/c he oftentimes choses to point down the scroll vs keep high & leveled. I have yet to watch this, but I will, when everyone will get up.
@Violinna
@Violinna 2 ай бұрын
Hi Ira, I don't wear a shoulder rest but use a small pad instead. I did wear one throughout middle and high school. For Adam, it may be worth trying - part of it is due to bad habit, which would need time for readjustment, but I've seen it work very well for some students! Although I usually advise them a different chinrest first...if they can...before assessing shoulder rest situation. It really is individual.

That was helpful. I'm an intermediate player but double stops, especially two left hand fingered double stops I find very difficult. Everyone has to start somewhere and I think I tried playing things that were too difficult for me in the first place. I think I'll try Cassia Harvey's book and go from there. I do have one question, well more than one but I'll just put one here - When playing a four not chord where the bottom two string are open and the top two are stopped do I leave the bottom two strings, once played, and concentrate on the two stopped notes (chord). It would seem obviously yes but I just want to be sure. Thank you for your time, Inna.
@Violinna
@Violinna 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching and your comment. The short answer to your question is yes. I imagine you're practicing a G major or G minor chord, in which the ear will typically perceive the top note as part of the melody, in most contexts.

Thank you so, so much for this video and your other tutorials. My instructor tells me to relax so many times during my lesson. 😅 I do have a question: I find that I get "stuck" in my upbow. And I lose that relaxed grip, so I tighten in order to go up. As am I hypermobile, would stopping before I lock out help even if I can't get the whole bow?
@Violinna
@Violinna 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! Honestly, it's really hard to answer your question without actually seeing you play... No joints should ever get locked. If this means you don't go to the tip of your bow, that's fine.

This video is totally wrong. Pythagorean Just Intonation is what is just intonation and is always the right tuning, even for chords. 5 limit tuning is founded on a relatively new and backwards way of conceiving of harmony that has resulted in basically all music being out of tune in the world. 5 limit harmony, when put to the test is totally incoherent as a musical system of pitches, and is melodically badly out of tune. And using both Pythagorean and 5 limit tuning alternating is confusion because the note C is C. There are no pluses or minuses on the page, no up and down commas, all that is a recent invention. Even meantone tuning, invented and popularized by Jesuitical Roman Catholics, is based on a perversion. It just declares by fiat that the major third should be a 5/4 ratio, and then perverts and detunes the 3/2 perfect fifth to make that which is by nature a just major third, the 81/64 ratio, into the 5/4. The 5/4 is NOT a major third. All of these people are lying to you,, knowingly or unknowingly. The just major third is Pythagorean, it is 81/64.
