Suction Issues and Troubleshooting with the Elvie Pump

Elvie Breast Pump had been such a lifesaver during my breastfeeding journey. I was exclusively pumping since my daughter wasn't the best latcher. During this process i learned various troubleshooting and tips when using the Elvie especially when it came to suction and milk production. I mean, don't get between a mama bear and her baby cub's milk. haha. Watch this video for more knowledge and ways of fixing most common issues with the Elvie. Very helpful, thank you! I’ve been hearing so many mixed reviews about the Elvie. My sister in law swears it hurt her milk supply while I see others exclusively pumping with it. The price point is so high too I didn’t want to risk it. I ended up choosing a medela pump but still want this one for when I return to work. Thanks!

@Rebecca Medela is always the safest bet when it comes to pumping. With the Elvie it really depends on that person unfortunately. If it helps, there are groups in Facebook that sells their used Elvie only if you’re interested. Thank you for watching.

2:34 good morning, this is what my pump is having issues with. It’s not suctioning right when I lay the other green piece on it. How do I fix this though? Thank you so much!

Hi @gracelindsey3406 if you’re not getting any suction when you lay the green piece, it may be a set up issue or a hub issue. Is this a problem from the beginning? Do you feel the air sucking in from the actual hub when you disassemble everything? If so, it’s a set up issue. If not, then I would contact Elvis support. In the event you feel the air being sucked in from the hub, there are multiple issues we have to look at. #1. Try these three things and let me know if you were able to solve it or not. Cheers

Hello @veronicamoretti would you clarify the second test ? Is this when you place three seal in the hub test? If you are not getting good suction from the hub, you would have to contact Elvie in hopes for a new hub.

Great video! Thank you. 1.what is the brand of the cold water tablets to clean the shields? 2. What does it mean if while pumping milk leaks out of the Elvie onto the inside of my bra ?

Hi @Amy &Chris! I personally didn’t use the cold water tablets but this is what Elvie support suggested. I suppose any brand would do. In regards to your leakage issue, are you stationary? In an upright position for most of the time ? Leakage can come from various factors. it can mean the valve isn’t functioning correctly. What I mean by this is that the valve isn’t able to open completely and is stuck together after washing. Leakage can be due to moving too much or angling the Elvie too much. Hope this helps.

I noticed you mentioned the valve shouldn’t be worn but if it is completely sealed it will create issues. How much of a slit should it have in it?

Hi Kirsty, great question. You just need to make sure the value isn’t stuck together. As long as you can squeeze it and it splits, it’s good to go. Now, if there’s too much spacing present (without squeezing the valve) then you may need to replace with another to have optimal suction.

Is the high pitch sound when everything is connected? Does the hub sound different before set up and after?

@@AkkoandTamo it doesn’t immediately start making that sound, and it’s not all the time but when it does, it starts anytime during my pumping sessions.

Hmm it’s strange that it’s not consistent. I would try Elvie’s customer service and see if they can help further.

Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I have trouble with suction on one of my pumps and I followed your steps to see where I'm having issues. I have no issue with suction when I place the seal into the hub but if I fully assemble it and place the other seal where my nipple would be (as you did at 2:27 in your video) I'm getting no suction at all. Any thoughts on where my issue may be or what I can try? Thank you!

Hi@ Azada I’m sorry you’re having Trouble with suction. It can be frustrating. I’m thinking the problem is in the valve or seal. Have you checked to see if the seal is nice and flat (see 1:00) if that’s not the problem have you check to see if the entire upper part of the valve is showering (see 4:40) ? Please let me know if this helps?

My wife and I had this same problem, I was able to get it to work by ensuring the seal for the soft plastic portion didn't move when inserting the hard plastic portion. That's the only thing that I can think of that would have caused this issue. Hopefully this helps!

Somehow my milk is getting stuck in the green circle at the top in between the shield, when I take pump off all the milk comes pouring out. I don’t know why it’s doing this

Does this happen when you are just sitting still? If not, try that it’s possible that there’s too much movement. If you are just sitting, try completely drying all parts especially the green seal. And making sure it’s properly places against the breast shield. Let me know how that goes.

@Ana hi, I did not have this problem. Are you having to continually go back to the let down step? Have you checked to see if any of the parts are wet or even moist? Are you moving while pumping or still?

Hi @cantcatchthis the warped breast shields usually are due to the sterilization process. How do you sterilize your breast shields? if you are noticing the clicking and creaking I would definitely contact Elvie for further assistance. Hope this helps.

Hi Akko, may I please know how long have you been using the Elvie and has it been able to maintain your milk supply? I'm using the Spectra S9 now and worrying of decreasing milk supply when switching to the Elvie.

Hi! When I would travel I used the Elvie but when I was back home, I would use both the Spectra and Elvie. I used the spectra because I didn’t have to pump for as long as the Elvie (~35-40min) to get the same amount. Everyone is different so I would advise you switch slowly. And if it doesn’t work out, use the Elvie during your outings or when you need to be hands free. Hope this helps.

Great question, I would say the usually wear and tear products such as the replacement of the valve, possibly the breast shield depending on how you wash; it doesn’t tolerated the dish washer very well. Those are the two items I probably had to replace during my pumping journey. I can also see that some may need to replace the seal.
