1:52 Diagnosis of Sudden Infant Death syndrome
2:32 Prevention of Sudden Infant Death syndrome
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as cot death or crib death, is the sudden unexplained death of a child less than one year of age. Diagnosis requires that the death remains unexplained even after a thorough autopsy and detailed death scene investigation. SIDS usually occurs during sleep.Typically death occurs between the hours of 00:00 and 09:00.[8] There is usually no evidence of struggle and no noise produced.[9]
The exact cause of SIDS is unknown. The requirement of a combination of factors including a specific underlying susceptibility, a specific time in development, and an environmental stressor has been proposed. These environmental stressors may include sleeping on the stomach or side, overheating, and exposure to tobacco smoke. Accidental suffocation from bed sharing (also known as co-sleeping) or soft objects may also play a role. Another risk factor is being born before 39 weeks of gestation. SIDS makes up about 80% of sudden and unexpected infant deaths (SUIDs). Other causes include infections, genetic disorders, and heart problems. While child abuse in the form of intentional suffocation may be misdiagnosed as SIDS, this is believed to make up less than 5% of cases.

SIDS isn't really a thing, it's the thing we call it when we can't identify why the baby died. The unsettling part about this, is that means all unidentified cases of infanticide have been classified as a SIDS death. There has even been some evidence to suggest that some doctors who knew it was an infanticide covered for the mother diagnosing it as SIDS because the mothers were able to convince them to feel sympathetic with them due to post partum depression.

Their are also documented cases of wrongly convicted parents suspected of infanticide when the cause was infact sids. Actually before this anomaly was widely known, almost all cases of sids where legally treated as murders.

@@aos1932 SIDS isn't a cause of death, its just what doctors put when the cause cannot be determined.
@aos1932
@aos1932 2 жыл бұрын
They know it wasn’t trauma, fever, stroke or heart or other organ failure. Or any other known common cause of death. It happens rarely, but statistically significant enough number of times for a pattern to emerge to conclude that it is a ‘thing’. Plenty of adults die without primary cause of death being known, their deaths are not categorised into a disease like sids. Although the mechanism of death isn’t known, this isn’t just a case of doctors not knowing what to put in a form. The patterns do exist and their is a history of diagnosis. Although it might also be used as an out for lazy doctoring.
@chrisr3120
@chrisr3120 2 жыл бұрын
@@aos1932 No, its not a thing, there is always a specific cause of death. SIDS is not a cause of death, it is a failure to identify the cause of death. I don't know why, but for some reason, our medical field has an issue these days with simply acknowledging there are times when things cannot be adequately identified, so we have situations like these, where rather than acknowledging the cause as being unknown, they just make up a diagnosis to state as being the cause. The problem is we kinda need to recognize this for the failure that it is, both because it discourages such laziness as to use it as a crutch, and also discourages its use in covering for mothers who killed their babies, as it often has been used for that purpose as well.

@carlipretorius7829
@carlipretorius7829 Жыл бұрын
You are correct. Thiamine (vitamin B1) is a cofactor for various multi-enzyme complexes in energy metabolism, and plays a major role in the synthesis of cholinesterases such as butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). BChE plays a major role in the brain’s arousal pathway, and low levels would reduce a sleeping infant’s ability to wake up or respond to its environment.

@lucienhalf7105

Agreed. A baby should be in the same room as the mother/parents so that way the mom, dad or either parent can be prepared if the baby wakes up feeling hungry or needs his/her diaper changed while also checking/making sure the room is at a right room temperature that's not too cold or too warm but needs to be at a balanced temperature. So the infant can sleep peacefully without problems/issues. But yeah I agree that a baby should never sleep alone in a seperate room.

There were night were milk will back up but not all the way out his nose but I could hear he was suffering. Omg there night he slept on my shoulder just to make sure he will be safe . Specifically in African American populations, disparaties in the system do not give them access to adequate education, particularly about issues like these. Lack of knowledge on prevention of SIDS may contribute to higher incidences of this happening. It does not necessarily have anything to do with genetic makeup or likeliness for disease occurrence. A lot of medical issues within this population has to do with access to adequate healthcare and proper education. A disservice to the population as a whole.
