Each to his own. I find the false colors, weird tints a distraction. Black and white has its own richness, depth and avoids the phoniness of early colorization. Otherwise, I find this movie better than a "B"--nice pacing and plenty of menace from Sinatra. I'm not sure if Sterling Hayden is convincing as the "marrying kind" but does well as the hero. Also, I am not old enough to remember but think I miss the age of passenger travel by rail, especially in which even smaller towns had a train station and seeing who was coming and going every time the train stopped was the day's excitement. Not to mention the double-feature Saturday afternoon.

At 76, I well remember this movie because at age 8, in 1954, it was the very first film that I saw, without an accompanying adult! I believe that it was a "B" movie (2nd film), but outstanding in its acting, espec- ially that of Frank Sinatra, playing a "crazed assassin"! Top notch!

*The boy who played "Pidge" (Kim Charney) continued in movies and television for another ten years, then went back to school and became a doctor. Although he's now 77 years old, he still works as a surgeon in Southern California. Sterling Hayden DID win a Silver Star in WW2, serving as a Marine Corps officer. He died at the age of 70 in 1986. Finally, Nancy Gates (Pidge's mother) died a short time ago, in 2019. She was 93.* 😇

What a treat to see this great movie in color! I’ve watched this movie through the years but always in black & white. I remember how frightening it was to watch when I was a kid. Very good acting and great story. Frank Sinatra was a great actor in addition to his other talents. The supporting cast was excellent. I read where they built a fake house on the hill since it was nothing but grass. A lot of the same train station remains. It’s nice watching a movie with acting and a good story. In this era of CGI with nothing but ridiculous special effects, gratuitous violence & sex it’s extremely rare to find a movie as good as Suddenly. Can’t anyone write anymore? Or are audiences so conditioned to only respond to lots of stimuli like amoebas?

The movie owes part of its notoriety to the fact that Lee Harvey Oswald watched it on television with his wife Marina on October 12, 1963 (six weeks before Kennedy's assassination), when it was being broadcast with another film, John Huston's The Insurgents, according to Marina Oswald's testimony to the Warren Commission on February 5, 1964. The Dallas Morning News of October 12 does mention in its programs the Huston film broadcast on Channel 11, but not the Allen film. However, according to Bugliosi, a last-minute deprogramming may have allowed it to be broadcast, since Marina Oswald gave a precise description of it to the Commission. A Secret Service search shows that the film was broadcast on Dallas TV on February 26, 1963.

I’d say the modern and artificial colorization process has finally reached the kind of color the Hwood industry had at the time for their biggest productions. Historically, though, let’s never lose sight THESE VERY B-MOVIES, THIS VERY GENRE was essentially linked to B&W in the collective memory. So, who would ever consider watching such classics as ‘The Maltese Falcon’, or ‘Sunset Boulevard’, or even ‘The Third Man’… in color ?!? Perfectly OK for the mainstream YT audience but obviously out of question for any serious Film studies scholar and any true film-buff. That would just be sheer heresy…
