The little hamlet around Sudley Church hosted troops during two battles and was a hospital in between, as well as a popular photography spot for locals. Garry Adelman summarizes it all!
This video is part of our Battlefield Tour Series commemorating the 160th Anniversary of First Manassas. You can view the full playlist here: • The Armies Arrive at T...

The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Awesome job Gary. I like to think that as we lose treasures like Ed Bearss and Shelby Foote, they are replaced by younger, and equally dedicated people like yourself who will continue to keep the memory of this war alive. Thank you!

Wonderful commentary for its clarity of language, speech and description. Whenever your face appears fronting this noble series I know I am about to enjoy total immersion in the reality - the presence - of true history.

If y'all do shiloh (I live in decatur, ala where Johnston wrote the last letter in his life to Davis before the battle) you need to get Dr Tim Smith and/or Bjorn Skaptason form Abraham Lincoln book shop to accompany you. They are the two best Shiloh historians in the world today. Both lead off trail hikes that show the hidden terrain that played a major role in the battle.

Great video Garry! I really wanted you to travel the flank march route to Sudley Ford. I have visited that ford from the north side near the Sudley Mansion site, now the site of a new housing development (formerly a golf course).

The war was already fought so why not learn , study and let the men Rest In Peace. Enjoy the history and go look at the battlefields. Go to the towns and see the beautiful art work in what ever statues are left. Statues can’t do any harm to you. Nothing changes the history that happen. Our country came together and we are reunited stronger than ever. I know this should be the way it is!

I have been trying to find that spot for the last year. Have been to stop #5 on the driving tour. So, I park my car and cross the road and hike down the trail until it runs out. Wish the NPS would put signs up pointing to the Thornberry house. I'll try again this week. Maybe I over looked a turn or something. Great video. Thanks. I don't live to far away. I'm in Leesburg. Can't believe I have never been that spot before.

Battlefield Trust, I really really like you all, I did see you all are going to Shiloh coming up, was curious while youre there, would you be doing a section on the Bloody Pond, reason I ask, I had 2 Great Great Uncles that were in that battle along with my Great great Grand Father, my Great Great Grand Father was wounded with the 59th OVI and My Great Great Uncle was killed in action around the bloody pond, all on the same day, on Day 2. Thanks.

The Union 'right hook' is similar to the same troop movement used by Hooker in May, 1863, to approach the battlefield at Chancellorsville. 'Retreat ..... back'? Is there any other way to retreat?

Are there efforts to try to purchase the private property yet that the original spring house sits on? I was just curious because you mentioned it as private property.
