I switched to watching your videos only on my computer so I could hover the mouse above cells to see the patterns. When you get to a new section like at 2:42 to pause and attempt to figure it out before continuing with the video. It's been helpful to try to see the patterns before you solve them. My guess was math, I taught for beginners for 16 years before changing careers. After a few years I started playing again, and was I out of shape. I had a fun discussion with someone today about Sudoku, when they told me that they hate math. I told them it's not math it's a puzzle that uses numbers, then told him he could try it with letters. He was intrigued and might be coming to your page soon now.

I got a Sudoku puzzle book on sale for just 99p that I am three quarters of the way through thanks to you. Now I realise that I have a new tactic to learn and can go back to the earlier easier puzzles and redo them using this new tactic to build up my skill. Talk about value for money. Lol

I've been using your lessons to learn Sudoku and I think they're great! In this lesson, you posed a question about whether it was better to start a puzzle using the TMB-LCR method or the three-blank-spaces method. I've tried both, and find that I generally do better starting with the TMB-LCR method. The reason is that the three-blank-spaces method is more productive when the row or column with the three blank spaces has more than two non-matching numbers in it. On hard puzzles, that is rarely the case. If I use the TMB-LCR method first, it fills in some numbers, which often makes the three-blank-spaces method more productive. I think this effect may be more pronounced for hard puzzles, which generally have fewer numbers filled in at the start. BTW, I think it's a credit to your teaching that I haven't finished all the lessons and am already struggling with hard puzzles!😊

At 3:49 you make this exceedingly complicated. Take the 5. Look at the columns and it becomes immediately clear that the 5 can go in only one place, namely the upper right corner of the bottom left block. Because the R and C 5's are already in place and the 5 cannot go in the bottom row. Likewise the lateral row of three blocks at the bottom shows 2 6's already, so it is clear that there's only one cell that will accommodate the 6.

+Malte Christensen You are right at 3.49 This video was to show a technique. One cannot cover too many new techniques at once when players are learning. I suppose it is the the teacher in me.

Agree, there seemed to be some handwaving magic to reduce the 6-5 in L column to derive a 6. Whereas, if the technique is applied to theT row in that block, 3 and then 5 are quickly derived, leaving 6 as the remaining choice for the other cell.

Okay. I try to use your method of going through the numbers, 1-9, and looking for top, middle,, bottom, and left center, right. But the correct number does not always fit into the predictable space. I dont know how to explain it better than that. I am making progress, however. Two months ago I had no idea how to solve a puzzle, and this past week I did a hard one.

Thanks for your comment. If the correct number doesn't fit in the space....leave it and go to another place in the puzzle. My suggestion is concentrate on easy puzzles first. Robin.

I am not sure what you mean but here is something to learn.You cannot have a number which is repeated in a row column or block. Watch the video again and you will hear me say this. Hang in there. Robin

For the walking stick method.. does it only work if there are three members in the block vs say four or five but still have the open row of three?

It only works if it is in a block. The shape can be found in 4 directions within the block. The long part of the stick is always within the block You can have 4 walking sticks within a block. I hope I have understood your question. Robin

Once you have had some experience, by all means if you see an opportunity to solve a new number...go for it. Whenever you solve a new number other numbers may be solved too. Try to remember where you left your procedure so you can go back to it once you have done as many ramifications as possible.

Walking Stick idea is good. But in this Lesson the "Demo" has not been photographed well. I got the feeling it was either difficult to see since he was covering the board with his back or he was rushing through. Could have well been re shot.

+kanga Kid If you look at my latest tutorial #9 it shows you how to look at many techniques at the same time, plus other tricks to make it go faster. The basic procedure is to get into the habit of Horizontal blocks TMB and then Vertical blocks using LCR. to start a puzzle. It is you choice.
