What a beautiful Haunting song...The guitar and bass lines are pouring melancholy....and Brett's voice is piercing...simply breathtaking!!! I know Bernard wrote these beautiful guitar lines...but Richard does a great work playing these amazing tunes nonetheless!!

Richard is absolutely a great guitarist/songwriter in his own right, and here he plays Bernard’s guitar parts mostly note for note! Brett’s voice here is amazing! The whole band is superb!!

important thing brett said once.. he was talking about his life and his friends/bandmates and they said they felt pretty young at 21 or some age. and he said.. well, we better get moving, yeah? .. the point is, time waits for no man.

I know a girl she walks the asphalt world She comes to me and I supply her with Ecstasy Sometimes we ride in a taxi to the ends of the city Like big stars in the back seat like skeletons ever so pretty I know a girl she walks the asphalt world But where does she go? And what does she do? And how does she feel when she's next to you? And who does she love in time honored fur? Is it me or her? I know a girl she walks the asphalt world She's got a friend, they share mascara I pretend Sometimes they fly from the covers to the winter of the river For these silent stars of the cinema It's in the blood stream, it's in the liver I know a girl, she walks the asphalt felt world But where does she go? And what does she do? And how does she feel when she's next to you? And who does she love in time-honored fur? Is it me or is it her? With ice in her blood And a Dove in her head Well how does she feel when she's in your bed? When you're there in her arms And there in her legs Well I'll be in her head 'cause that's where I go And that's what I do And that's how it feels when the sex turns cruel Yes both of us need her, this is the asphalt world Lyrics of beauty. Even 23 years from now, it is and forever will be the best song in humanity. Nothing will beat it.

I prefer Bernard over Richard even though Richard is great in his own right but when it comes to playing live back then I think Richard put more effort in and gave better performances. Bernard was very hit or miss and could be terribly sloppy in those days, he was probably more entertaining to watch because he had a menacing energy and drifted about all over the stage but listening back to live performances he rarely seemed to be trying particularly hard whereas Oakes, though often stationary and stiff always played like a professional.

I was sad when Butler left the group. But over time, I've realized what a brilliant guitarist Oakes is-I dare say even better than Butler in a lot of ways. Different styles, but Oakes' playing is more interesting to me (see Every Monday Morning Comes, Young Men, Trash, Electricity). Highly underrated and unfortunately forever in the shadow of Butler. I also think they could've mixed his guitars a bit better. Even Ed Buller has said so when looking back at the Coming Up album.

For me Bernard is more emotional than Oakes is. Oakes is good but you won't get into his atmosphere but Bernard can. What more important,you can hear the base guitar from Osman as well as drummer gibson's as a whole part of Suede. Oakes' solo for me is too much and too "solo". The beginning of "Asphalt world" is peak of Suede masterpieces. Sorry for my English.

What are you on about? Terribly sloppy? Bernard was the most consistent in the band, as well as the most technically skilled. If anyone was sloppy it was Brett, listen to their live performance in Blackpool. Richard can play all of the songs perfectly, but Bernard had the tenacity and energy which was why he could write better songs.
@SweetSoulBrother0
@SweetSoulBrother0 6 жыл бұрын
Bernard has joked that he played sloppy back then as well in his Animal Nitrate video on youtube. They're not easy songs either lol that Oakes came in and learned everything previous to his inclusion in the band is understated

Honestly I appreciate the effort put to the comment but I can agree with very few of what's been claimed. Bernard's always been super consistent guitarist in my point of view, and if people watched the video in discussion, Richard's definitely not static and stiff. They're different in a sense, but they're very similar in a sense as well. It's crazy really, havin' 2 incredibly talented yet quite peculiar (in a good way) guitarists in a row in one band. Brett's a talent magnet.

Brett discusses the reasons behind his and Bernard's fallout quite thoroughly in his 2nd autobiographical book "Afternoons with the blinds drawn", although it's one side of the story I doubt it's very inaccurate since they seem to be in alright terms today anyway.

@ChainNonSmoker Don't know what is in Bretts book but Bernards dad died in horrible circumstances (diagnosed with cancer and was dead within about 3 weeks) and instead of postponing their American tour as they should have done to allow Bernard time to grieve the band went ahead. I think they flew out the day after the funeral or something crazy. Bernard's head was a mess understandably, grief is rarely rational or pretty. The band showed zero sensitivity to him and acted like he was killing their buzz, so he distanced himself, traveling separately. That horrible and damaging tour sowed the seeds for Bernard suffering a breakdown during the making of Dog Man Star. Not one person in the group tried to help him or showed any patience or understanding (as is so often the case with mental illness) Saw an interview with Brett years later were he exoresed regret for not being there for Bernard during this time and wishes he had just asked him how he was feeling and supported him.
