Joe strummer and mick jones reminds me of paul mccartney and john lennon Joe Strummer = john lennon because of political and protest songs, the activist one Mick jones = Paul McCartney 'cause he was more pop, he was the musical genius I'm glad that The Clash "sold out", they did punk music, but they were not a punk band, they did a lot of styles (reggae, rockabilly, jazz, new wave, pop, post-punk, ska etc) The Clash, the only band that matter RIP Joe Strummer

Never gets enough credit? It's probably their most famous song in terms of mainstream popularity and radio play. At least in the top 3 along with Rock The Casbah and Should I Stay Or Should I Go. It only started life as a hidden track because the album sleeves had already been printed when it was added to the album, it wasn't because they wished it to hide it away... they released it as a single after all.

This one clip shows in 3 mins and 47 seconds just what an incredibly cool, visually and sonically band the Clash were. I started listening to them when I was 11 in 82. They were like romantic troubadour rock and roll cowboy poets- the grease in their hair; the lyrics, the passion. Those four guys-in any order - Mick Topper Paul Joe. Still a heroic foursome. Never been another band like them. Perfect.

Without a doubt,the best 75 minutes of my life..saw The Clash live in 1982,,,they were spot on,all of them,and they knew it,,it wasn't typical what they did,The Clash opened the show,,,7500 people were expecting Joe Ely and the Flatlanders to open,as is usual right.....the crowd is buzzing around,settling in,the lights go down a bit,then a bit more,,then bam! total darkness,so dark in that place,you could feel movement all around you,but could,not see person next to you...how the clash got on the stage in total darkness,I don't know then the music starts in the complete darkness,,,Death or Glory the opening bars and the lights explode on.and there they are bringing it,,Strummer and Jones are handling their guitars like machine guns,,Simonon thumping out the base,,I heard a bunch of opening songs at many concerts over the years,but I don't know if I've ever heard a better one than Death or Glory performed that night...and for the next 75 -80 minutes the Clash brought it,,,and that crowd and myself,,you new it was something special happening,a rare thing,and all those folks appreciated what they were seeing and hearing,,and we gave it back to those guys on that stage,,and I was damn lucky to be pretty damn close to the front,,The Clash played off the buzz in the crowd,and the crowd fed off the energy of those guys,,,and Strummer knew it,,you could see it in him and when it was'nt his vocals ,,you could see him talking to the other fellas,,encouraging,pushing,willing them to give it all,,,and I'm witnessing this knowing full well that I was one fortunate son of a gun ,,and they're getting to the end of they,re set,and u feel it's coming to an end,,,,And Strummer asks "do u want us to go on,do u want us to keep playing,and that damn crowd starts a chant ,and a noise that you could feel throughout your entire body,,,and they won't stop,and some son of a bitch turns the house lights up,and people get even louder,not mad,or angry,,,just louder,,and louder and when you think they can't sustain it much longer,,,man Strummer starts up with that guitar and it gets downright off the wall,and the others,,Jones ,Simonon Headon you can see there spent,and they just want to exit the stage,and they are voicelessly pleading with Strummer to somehow end this,,,and Strummer is pointing and gesturing to the crowd ,and he strikes a bargain,5hey play one more song, and he thanks everyone for coming out,,and as the music begins for that one last song,,he says " We're gonna go get some badly needed rest,and he say Joe Ely's coming out and tho give him a gracious welcome,,and to enjoy the show,,,,and the other fellas are unhooking and slowly walking of stage,,and Strummer mentions the bargain ,,and says "you all show these next guys some love and if you do,,,if I you really ,truly do,,we gonna come back out,but you all gotta bring it like you did for us,,,and we did man,we did,and I'm telling you ,,35 -40 minutes later,,,,man out come the clash ,,and I ain't never seen it ,,but I heard about it a lot growing up in West Texas,,I seen lightining strike twice in the same place ,. That night was damn remarkable,,,it's been something close to 40years ago.... I hear a Clash song on the radio now or get them on my phone,,,,takes me back

That intro that you edited in, with Joe telling the audience there's always the toilet if they don't like this song and Mick (wearing a different shirt on a different night) looking completely defeated... damn. Makes it look like Mick was on an island with this song. I don't know how fair that is. Definitely not everyone's bag or expectation, but it is a f***ing classic in the end.
@maddie84157 ай бұрын
I do agree that Joe's little spiel suggesting some might not be interested was a bit tasteless, and the image of Mick edited in there doesn't help. I think Joe was worried about doing a typical "love gone wrong" type of song that might not carry as much meaning to the audience. But the song was well received and is very memorable now, so it doesn't really matter now. I think this song is so enduring because Mick was singing about something that was powerful to him, you can hear it in his voice.
@Nazzz65 Жыл бұрын
Mick was an ardent rock and roll fan. He didn't seem to be at all ready to "destroy rock and roll" and IMO that made him a very, very formidable musician. It's hard to believe he's 67 now, the year of our lord 2023. Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think...

Absolutely in my tip toppermost gigs of all time. By the time they came on it was way past 10pm and they played till well after midnight. Absolutely on the top of their game, perfect in every single way, a fantastic rock and roll band, who nailed every song they played that night. Mikey Dread and Joe Ely were supporting. We were stuck in Lewisham as the trains stopped running by the time the band stopped playing.Happy, happy days. It would never have happened without Sammy, those tickets probably sold out within the hour back then. If you want to know if the legend is true about this band, take it from me they were fantastic that night in February 1980. I can never understand if how they filmed it only 3 or 4 songs have ever seen the light of day?
