Suede and nubuck are both unusual types of leather that a lot of people confuse. Here's what you should know.
SUEDE
What you think of when you hear "leather" is made from the outside of the animal's skin. Suede is made from the *inside*, what you'd call the "underside." It's softer, more pliant, and less durable than regular, full grain leather.
SEE MY REVIEW OF THE SUEDE TAFT DRAGON BOOT: • Review: Taft's Dragon ...
NUBUCK
This is made from the outside of the animal's hide, but it's been sanded or buffed to give it a slight nap of protein fibers. So it's fuzzy, which is why it gets mistaken for suede. The upside is it's more durable than suede, but it's harder to clean and doesn't patina as well - old nubuck isn't great to look at.

CARE
There are plenty of brushes for suede and nubuck - here's a good example: amzn.to/2LFsTkx
You can also clean your nubuck with Renewbuck, which is linked above.

In my experience it’s easier to get stains out of suede than smooth leather. I have suede work boots and I can just take a stiff brush (even a wire brush, something I can’t do with smooth leather) and a little soapy water and wash em in the sink and the stains come out super easily. I then just use whatever conditioner I have and I’ve never really disliked the results, even with stuff that says don’t use on suede. Last time I used beeswax and coconut oil, gave them a nice dark rustic waxed leather look. Next time I wash them I’m pretty confident I can get all the beeswax oil and dirt out with soapy water and a stiff brush and they’ll be like new again.

Nick, nice discussion and commentary on the differences of Suede vs. Nubuck leather. I find myself always getting confused between the two leathers, thus your video is very handy and I’m sure I will be referring back to it frequently. Nice job! Keep up the good work. Ed

saphir medaille d'or makes amazing protucts to protect your suede and if they are dirty to clean them

Thanks, "Neek".... I always look forward to your posts. Your channel is outstanding, informative and entertaining. Please keep it up. Have you tried that Saphir spray for suede? I picked up some Common Project$ Chelsea boots that will get dirty just looking at them. I held my breath (figuratively and literally) and generously sprayed them as well as my RM Williams suede. The spray did not leave any evidence or residue and the water absolutely runs right off. The Saphir certainly isn't cheap... about $25 a can. But I used it to protect about $1,500 in several pair of suede boots. I can wear my suede now without panicing about getting near water. The can covers about 6 pair of boots. I highly recommend it on all high end suede.

That means a lot dude, thanks for your thoughtful comment! I just got some common projects sneakers (Achilles) too and I'm paranoid about them getting dirty every second I wear them. I'll have to ask the company themselves what they recommend.

is waxed suede also called apache leather? the smooth dark leather that gets marks on it easy. Like a fingernail can literally mark them without trying to. I have a pair of shoes I'm trying to figure out how to remove these marks from being tossed around in the closet floor. Never worn but have marks all over them. Nit appealing at all. Thanks

Friend, one question, I recently bought 2 pairs of nubuck timberland boots, but currently I am working from home, and I hardly go outside, so I don't use them much, and in my house there is usually humidity, could this affect the leather of the boots? the fact of not using them and keeping them in the plastic bag for long periods of time? Or is nothing going to happen to them?

What do we think of WD 40
@TylrVncnt
@TylrVncnt 4 жыл бұрын
AZ Battle School - lol, you’re not serious yeah? Don’t use WD40.. it can “displace” water but it won’t *waterproof* anything... Plus it has naphtha (lighter fluid) and mineral oil (this wouldn’t be bad for the leather) in it, but the naphtha would prob be a bit aggressive on dyes/etc since it is a solvent (a useful one for many many other things! Just not for leather IMHO!)

Tylr Vncnt not my idea, it’s fairly popular. I’ve done that and waxed boots both work just different properties.

They will be ruined now then yeah, if they are Nubuck after what 2-3 months, £150 spend, totally ruined because it had a speck of water on them, yeah?. Waste of money and a con Nubuck, total con.

@KiwiGraggle

You dont, you go and you buy another pair. Now you have learned not to buy Nubuck mate. Like you I realised you cannot live in a country that rains, has mud or grass to weak Nubuck shoes, Gods honest truth. They were made for Dubai and Dubai only mate, the only place they wont stain and get ruined with a spit of rain, haha.

Roughout is different , it's made from the underside of the grain but suede is made by splitting the leather, so it’s not as thick as roughout.

Those Waxed Dragons you got aren’t a waxed suede. It’s a top grain leather which has had wax applied to it but without sanding it down. That’s how I’ve read it on CF Stead in the past anyway. I might be wrong but it’s a great video anyway, thanks Nick :)

Unless Taft's description of it on their site as "suede" and the people at Taft I sent the review to are wrong, I'm pretty sure it's suede? Like it's fuzzy.
