How I created crushed glass fish and set them in resin

In this week's video, I have experimented with crushed glass and resin. The original plan was to create three fish out of the crushed glass and resin, by making a mould out of 5mm thick foam board and then pouring another slab of resin for the fish to sit on.
Once cured, I wasn't happy with the original idea, so moved on to plan B. So now we have two separate resin pieces.
The video also goes into detail on how the resin pieces are mounted into a couple of IKEA frames.
Materials required:
Foam Board (5mm thick)
Plastic bags or Painter's Tape (to line the mould)
Crushed Glass (or equivalent)
Resin
Pigments or paints to colour the resin
Picture Frames
Heat Gun or Blow Torch to zap bubbles

One would think those fish would be gaudy, yet they are quite restrained. They look like swimming fish. The water piece is just beautiful! I am glad you explained you had to add more resin due to the dents, because I thought it looked confined. Your work has a very light organic feel and I thought the way it was framed looked heavy. Don’t get me wrong I am still in love with it. It was just different.

How do you pack your pieces for shipping in order to protect the resin.
@SueFindlay
@SueFindlay 5 жыл бұрын
I wrap them in foam, then add a layer of bubble wrap. Note, never place bubble wrap directly to resin, it reacts and leaves marks on the resin. I then place them in a box.

Hello Sue I love your work. I am working on a project and need some add vice I want to put resin on a canvas then put aluminum foil on it then put my pigment colors then take my resin mold of a bulls head with horns on to it. What do you think?? ty
@SueFindlay
@SueFindlay 5 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I don't apply resin to canvas, as it tends to sag in the centre, I always use boards for my projects. Secondly, I would wait a good half an hour before attaching the bulls head to the resin, this will stop it from sliding around.

Possible silly question coming up 🙂🙂 Could you not have held the fish in place by putting pins in at each side, and top & bottom, just to stop them slipping? Like the kind you'd get in a sewing kit.
@SueFindlay
@SueFindlay 4 жыл бұрын
The pins would be resined into the picture, removing them would be difficult and then you would be left with holes in the resin board, which would require more resin to fill. What I should have done, was left the resin to cure for about an hour before adding the fish. :-)
@amethyst1826
@amethyst1826 4 жыл бұрын
I did wonder about holes, but thought if you took them out in time, the resin might just slip into the holes. I saw a video of someone using pins to hold thread to make some jewellery. That's what gave me the idea. I do love your videos. They're very good.
