Nice to see someone else using clay with resin!! :) I use polymer clay with resin all the time. I bake it first but I have seen someone else do a video using unbaked polymer clay in resin and they said it held up fine over time. I just like the polymer clay better because I am used to using it and it comes in so many colors already including my favorite - glow in the dark - which isn't really a color but... :p - Heidi

@@karentravis3996 I usually bake my clay in a dedicated toaster oven but there have been some times when the clay piece was too big for the toaster oven and I used my regular gas oven. I have not noticed any residue left in my oven from the few times I have used it to bake clay pieces. :)

Another medium that you might try is cold porcelain. You make it yourself and there are a number of recipes out there. Most people try two or three and then pick their favorite. It doesn't crack and is much less likely for the thin pieces to break. It's fairly flexible when it's dry. You can get it SUPER thin without sacrificing strength. I used to make flowers out of it and they're so beautiful and strong, considering their thickness.

Most definitely, dip the twine and yarn into your resin, run it through your fingers (wearing gloves of course) to remove the excess and then apply to your board. It will cure nice and hard. Incidentally, you have given my ideas for some new pieces 😉 thank you 💕

You have completely amazed me with the work you do. So talented! One of a thousand questions: When you pour resin on your flat surfaces (like round boards) why doesn't it all run off? My resin is very thin and does not set fast at all. I feel I'm wasting too much resin on the run-off. You seem to mention several resins and I don't know which ones to go with.
@SueFindlay
@SueFindlay 4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you are mixing too much. Do you use a resin calculator for the amount of resin you need? I use www.uresin.com.au/art-calculators/ to calculate how much I need. If that doesn't work, then try another brand. Mastercast 1:2:1 or Stonecoat resins are popular choices.

I love seeing how you use different mediums together. I've used homemade air dry clay for a lot of things and love working with it but it does have it's little quirks. The draw back is that it should be dried for several days to make sure it's completely dried before being painted and sealed to avoid it molding in the future. I've also used polymer clay also which avoids the time delay, but I prefer the air dry for molding.

Can’t tell you Sue how much I love this piece 💕 it’s the closest to my heart 💖 Do you prime your boards in general first with transparent material like clear gesso? Because I’m wondering how do you keep the wooden raw look! It looks much better than the white gesso, I know I cover it with resin later so it doesn’t make difference the colour of the primer. But the sides of the board can show the difference, because if the sides are not fully covered with resin (some missing spots), it’s better to have the wooden raw look than the white gesso. You know what I mean?

I don't bother priming these placemats because I normally use them for testing and experimenting on. I may paint them a colour to match the base colour of the resin I am about to pour. 💕

I recommend using a damp cloth and then drying with a lint free cloth to remove streaks.

This is great Sue, are you in Perth also? I’ve bought air dry clay to use as a “wood” substitute look for placing in my silicone jewellery moulds. But I’ll also try adding themes or 3D texture to some boards or geode creations. Looks like you use the same round boards from Kmart that I use, sooooo cheap n awesome. Lovely art. X

I am in Perth also and do use the same boards. These are ideal when you are trying something new, because they don't cost much 😉

Sue. How would you shape the polymer clay to fit the board before cooking, use a metal sheet with the circular outline ? 🦆💕

Hi Sue, do we need to seal the air dry clay after the design is dry? I was thinking about mod podge/resin to apply at the front. Because I’m wondering if someone cleans the piece later with damp cloth, can the air dry clay absorbs moisture and becomes soft again. Or once the design is dry, it can’t get soft again? Thanks
