The Atheist Experience episode 20.45 for November 13, 2016 with Matt Dillahunty and John Iacoletti.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblog...
KZbin comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZbin comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Lesson to Billy: Don't argue for intelligent design, when you have no intelligence yourself.
@AntitheistHuman
@AntitheistHuman Жыл бұрын
Pretty fair, but also to make the very argument of design you have to be a bit deadheaded, they don't undestand that argument comes with an infinte loop of a god creating another god until infinity because in their argument if the universe is complex it needs something even more complex to create it (here comes the imaginary god) but again, the very thing that is complex needs a former creator which had to be even more complex, so god has a creator god and the creator god of the creator has a creator and so for, intelligent design is debunked and dead long ago

@@jasonspades5628 This is incorrect. Science doesn't demonstrate something to be true. It actually tries to prove things false. The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection is not 'truth'. It's a tentative explanation for the observed phenomenon we call evolution. When we test the theory, we're testing it to prove it false, not true. If we can't prove it wrong, the theory of remains as the best explanation. But if we prove it wrong, we make a new theory to explain it. Like Newtonian Gravity. Newtonian Gravity has been shown to be false, and was replaced by General Relativity.

That's Jordan Peterson's m.o. , it's always "well it depends by what you mean by x" then redefine x to the point it's lost all intent or known meaning. I saw him answer the question "do people need God to be happy?" by redefining "God" as "whatever someone cares about the most". He literally said to a lot of people their children are their primary motivation so their children are "God" to them and "people need God to be happy". All of the comments were fawning over his genius of his answer even though his fans would never accept that sort of blatantly dishonest rhetorical device from one of his interlocutors.

One of the frustrating things, besides Billy’s ignorance, is when he kept trying to butt in when the hosts are talking on THEIR show. I see this all the time with religious folk who call the The Atheist Experience. I keep yelling out loud, “Shut the f@&k up and listen!” I know you’re trying to hold on to your delusions Billy, but shut up and learn something. Lastly, ANYONE who calls into the Atheist Experience: it is their show and therefore, be respectful of the fact that you’re calling in to find out answers from the hosts…not to question them to death, not to preach (I really hate that one), and not to butt in every time they are in the middle of talking on their show. It just shows that you’re not listening and just waiting for your turn to talk/preach.

The first grave misconception was the idea that supersymmetry had been disproven. It hasn‘t. It has just not been proven by experiments that according to certain strains of string theory should have been observable but weren’t. That surely was a setback for those particular strains of string theory, but even for those, it was a mere „call for refinement“, not a death sentence. And even string theory as a whole class of models isn‘t the only hypothesis that’s being discussed, and there‘s no way of telling whether the correct answer might be yet another naturalistic model we just haven‘t even come up with. In short, those experiments found that certain strains of a certain class of models were not viable in their current form. That’s hardly what I would call a „disproof of any natural cause“.

There have been times where I've been watching these videos and I'm screaming in my head helplessly, because I know why the caller isn't understanding and what the hosts should be saying to make them grasp the concepts and points being expressed to them. Sometimes it's just noticing an issue like the caller missing a fundamental fact that the hosts haven't driven home, and that the call is pointless until the caller realizes and accepts that fact. For example, Billy's reasoning leads me to believe doesn't grasp that to claim something has been demonstrated to an empirical standard, like the universe required an INTELLIGENT creator, that it's not good enough to appeal to philosophical possibility (something is possible because it hasn't been shown to be impossible), you have to actually show that it's empirically possible. If Matt drove that point home and wouldn't permit Billy to move on until he showed he understood that concept and accepts it as necessary, then either Billy would admit his "argument" and "proof" are fallacious, or he'd stubbornly refuse to give up his biased belief and Matt could save more time by telling Billy to go fly a kite. There needs to be more emphasis on not giving these dickheads the time of day if they're not going to accept the superior and demonstrable standards of logic, reason and empirical standards over feelings and "personal experiences". If they're just gonna stick to the lazy and narcissistic notion that their demonstrably fallacious opinions and "arguments" are equal/reliable to truly credible methods, then they don't deserve attention & validation and go enjoy the echo chamber of talking to other theists and charlatan apologists until they give up their biases and agree to give up their inferior ways of reasoning. Some opinions are objectively fallacious and shouldn't be tolerated. I refuse to allow any theist to get away with the cultivated appearance of being rationally justified, because they aren't and don't deserve respect and veneration. Sure it's a form of elitism, but dammit if we let the bar be lowered by these chumps, then it becomes harder and harder to keep the well free of poison. Compromising and allowing people to comfortably hold irrational beliefs is a contributing factor to why there's anti-vaxxer medical PROFESSIONALS and strong support that Creationism should not only be taught in schools, but in SCIENCE classes. They and their ridiculous beliefs are a cancer to academia and respectable thought and it's high time we stop indulging and force them to comply with proper standards. If they refuse, they don't get to participate in any science and medical fields. Which is fine by me because they don't deserve to be there. I don't subscribe to the polite idea that everyone is entitled to believe whatever they want. If I have to share a world with you, then you are not permitted to comfortably hold irrational beliefs, and you are especially not permitted to express them out loud without being challenged to properly justifying them. I would expect nothing less from myself and actual scientists/scholars, so there's no fucking way I'm giving these lazy and ignorant turds a pass.

It's people like Billy who believe that 'they' have the answers, and that everyone else should just agree with them without question, and if we 'do' question them, they get hostile and defensive, of which then, they shut down any ability to communicate, because they aren't willing to consider ALL of the possibilities that don't include the supernatural. It's their way and that's it. The facts and reason be damned.

I hear this all the time. Instead of making arguments based on accepted common definitions, we'll just redefine terms to fit our arguments. Also, instead of presenting evidence, presenting something, ANYTHING, and calling it evidence.

In all fairness, Sherlock Holmes flat out says that his record is far from perfect, and that he's annoyed that Watson only ever writes about his most sensational cases (the narrative framework of the entire series), which he's usually able to figure out (and even then he's still occasionally unable to catch the culprit).

Billy is a classic example of someone who has seized upon any number of arguments based on bad or fallacious reasoning and is utterly baffled when those flaws are pointed out rather than passively letting him proceed. He gives the distinct impression of someone who has never heard the arguments against his supposedly clever arguments and thus has few tools other than becoming agitated when he encounters them. My favorite part is when he points out error in Matt's argument and thus why his reasoning is invalid.....all while failing to understand that Matt's argument was HIS OWN argument turned back on him. This is what happens when you are so convinced of your own cleverness that you lose the ability to listen.

I think the Supernatural by definition does not exist for one reason: if you demonstrate a supernatural event , like, say, telepathy or telekinesis, and your demonstration is real and true, you just moved those phenomena into the natural world, so they are no longer supernatural, even if we can't explain them yet.

Agreed , The Beginning of the universe can never be demonstrated or understood by Human minds.
@truerealrationalist
@truerealrationalist 4 жыл бұрын
Bingo! I refer to this is retroactive naturalization. Without an all-encompassing defintion of what is "natural," it isn't possible to provide an example of anything supernatural. Because science evolves by design, upon being researched, literally any hypothetical event or phenomenon will be deemed under the conditions that allows or causes it. The result is a built-in moving goalpost.

And I do not understand why people are so damn bothered by the idea that we don't know everything? What the hell kind of world would this be if there was **nothing** for us to discover? I'm absolutely fascinated by the study of black holes, sky surveys in general (speaking to SETI and the more prosaic scans where you are just looking for things not visible in the normal visible light spectrum, etc.) I'm fascinated by the study of Nuclear Physics, both for energy production and just in understanding how the fundamental laws of the microscopic work, etc. The reason these things fascinate me is BECAUSE we don't know every fucking thing there is to know about them!
