Fills my heart with so much joy to see someone get to experience the magic that WAS Suffocation. I know they still tour and produce albums with just Terrence Hobbs as the sole original member. But if you were lucky enough to witness them in their prime it was truely something special. Myself, I saw Suffocation over 20 times and all I can remember from every time was wanting to go crazy in the moshpit. Mike Smith will always be the originator of the blast beat to me. Mike Smith took an ambidextrous approach to drumming he was neighther right handed nor left handed. Frank's lyrics were deep, insightful, poetic, dark and challenged so many ideas. They really freed peoples minds and their darkest dreams. Terrence and Doug crafted so many riffs that challenged the listener and student in so many ways. Because we are all students to the almighty Suffocation. Many replicated but never duplicated. Suffocation had many challenges throughout their career but I believe their perseverance to adversity was their greatest strength. Mike Smith was quoted once saying "whatever people expect from us we must do the opposite." That statement sums up Suffocation better than anything ever could. Their riffs were backwards and upside down the beats had snares on 1 and kicks on 3. They lived and thrived in the upside down world. This translated to the album art and the music it's self. If there were ever a death metal hall of fame I'd say after we hand out trophies to Death, Possessed, Massacre, Morbid Angel and Autopsy and then we make a new category. Because GOAT doesn't even begin to cover what Suffocation were. There were a few before them but there have never been greater after them.

Look at the recording work of Scott Burns from Morrisound studios . He did most of the great early death metal records including suffocations first. Pioneered some dope techniques.
