This entire album is a masterpiece, but it’s such a painful album to listen to. I really have to be okay mentally to spend time with it because it’s one of the rawest bodies of work I’ve ever heard
@mompvti24082 жыл бұрын
True. The melancholy and pain in this album is just too much to bare, but I keep listening to it. I'm sorry he had to go through that pain but he channelled and turned it into something magical
@elusiveDEVIANT3 ай бұрын
Without trying to sound dramatic, I understand and have experienced all of these songs. The only thing is one that hits me really hard. Had someone in the past, knew they were special but situation was fucked. Listened to eveyone else but my heart and him and nothing but profound regret and pain since. Never fucked something up so spectacularly. And the burden of what I did and what I lost has only grown with time. It's absurd. So it goes.

I saw him play this album on tour a long time ago, and it was like.. a life altering experience. It's just such a moving opus. He sang through the whole album and then apologized for not bantering/talking between songs but said that the album is a marathon... and he can't stop til it's done. Then he was very sweet and played some hits but WHEW what a gift

Sufjan has a way of floating you on a sonic cloud of emotion. This album is by far his saddest because of the subject matter. It’s his reaction to the death of his mother, with whom he had a loving but difficult relationship. She suffered from mental illness and a lot of that is present in some of these lyrics. You really hit the nail on the head when you talked about the ending of the album and the way he held his voice throughout. I think the reason this sounds so “warm,” as you put it, I’d because though he had these difficulties with her he still loved her, so that love is brought through in the warmth. You should definitely do more of his music. I promise that this is the hardest hitting emotionally of anything he’s done. And watching you be emotional and not talking much during this review actually conveyed more than a “talking” review could have. This album just hits differently.

This is my grieving album about my grandfather. It’s just perfect that it came out that year. Love that you said the arrangements is somewhat warm as a contrast to the lyrics, and I took comfort in that warmth for sure

I LOVE Sufjan! I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to Come on Feel the Illinoise. He has a 5 disc set of Christmas music which is sort of bizarre but has some solid gold originals like Sister Winter.

@ns52232 жыл бұрын
@@2553he Eh, I dunno. I think if you're not including interludes, song-for-song Illinois is the better and more consistent album, as well as possessing the better highs. I just think it's a better record. Carrie & Lowell falls apart a bit for me in the second half. Every song is still good, though.

@@ns5223 I think that's my problem with illinois.. all the interludes and 20 tracks it kills something in the album for me.. and I agree with you C&L doesn't keep its strength and gets weaker and weaker towards the last 4 songs but it's still a masterpiece and one of 2010s best albums
