Intro: RM - "Persona" (the idol or the artist that they portray/show in public) Interlude: SUGA - "Shadow" the darker part of yourself the ambitious one being on top realizing you can't handle the situation of being well known or famous and end up being scared. Outro: JHOPE "Ego" The acceptance of oneselff, persona and ego together and realizing they're all part of you. The stronger and wise version of you.

This is the second album based on Carl Jung’s concepts of there being parts of the psyche some of which are conscious and others unconscious and even a collective unconscious that’s expressed beautifully through the visuals based on contemporary artworks.

SUGA'S Note to BTS Title: What A Relief It’s already been five years since we debuted. We were just boys with many dreams. We had nothing, but now we have many things. We were only dreaming, but now we are the dream for someone. Life is full of choices and regrets. I’m scared and so are we. We dreamed of flying high up in the sky, but it’s too high and cold. It’s hard to catch our breath. The brighter the light is on us, the bigger the shadow. What a relief that we have seven members. What a relief that we have each other... ---Min Yoongi (Suga)

The album is based on Karl Jung's theory, that humans consist of three parts, Persona, Shadow and Ego. In BTS' album, Map of the soul 7: the rapline directly covers this: RM: Into: Persona SUGA: Interlude: Shadow J- HOPE: Outo: Ego All are linked.

This is from Map of the Soul which is a concept created by Carl Jung, who founded analytical psychology. "The Jungian shadow can include everything outside the light of consciousness and may be positive or negative. Because one tends to reject or remain ignorant of the least desirable aspects of one's personality, the shadow is largely negative. There are, however, positive aspects that may also remain hidden in one's shadow (especially in people with low self-esteem, anxieties, and false beliefs). "Everyone carries a shadow," Jung wrote, "and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. Jung stated the shadow to be the unknown dark side of the personality. According to Jung, the shadow, in being instinctive and irrational, is prone to psychological projection, in which a perceived personal inferiority is recognized as a perceived moral deficiency in someone else. Jung writes that if these projections remain hidden, "the projection-making factor (the Shadow archetype) then has a free hand and can realize its object-if it has one-or bring about some other situation characteristic of its power." These projections insulate and harm individuals by acting as a constantly thickening veil of illusion between the ego and the real world. You guys really need to check out Persona then watch the DKDKTV explanation, which will go through Jungian's process of individuation! Glad you guys are getting into this side of the guys. Suga has always been very open about his anxieties and depression. :) Love you guys! Thank you for reacting!~

I personally believe that the "shadow" links back to the greed that he refers to in his first mixtape (on the song The Last), where he talks about how greed is like a collar around his neck and turning him into a monster. He was greedy to get to the top, but now that he's there, he doesn't know what to do with it. But in this song, he accepts that there's this inner, greedy part of himself, and it's good for us to accept all of ourselves, even the "negative" parts, because it's still part of who we are.
@jawatisdi31253 жыл бұрын
Again, great analysis! 👥 For me the shadow Suga is referring to is not so much his older self but the doubts, panick and depression that all of us have. I feel he says that he wanted to be up here and thought he would lose all that, but as you said as well, in the bright spotlights the shadow gets even darker, so he can’t get rid of it. And in the end he’s saying that he will integrate/accept the shadows but he’ll make sure they will not break him. DKDKTV has a great explanation video for this song, it explains the whole Map of the soul concept, which comes from the psychology of Carl Jung and is the theme for this BTS chapter. 💜

This song still gives me chills when I hear it. One of my absolute favorites, so well done! I connect with Suga because of his struggle to manage his dark and light sides. Some of us can't merge them to make gray so balancing them is the goal. We shouldn't deny the shadow because it is us too and him being able accept the shadow because ultimately the hunger it gave helped him get where he is today is just a beautiful concept to me. 💜💜💜🔥🔥🔥

It might be too much to ask, but I’d absolutely LOVE to see you react to his full D-2 mixtape (10 songs including Daechwita). Of course you could look at all the songs separately, but I really think the experience is much more amplified if you listen to it all at once in order. If you’re not into it that’s completely ok, you give us more than enough already!! But I just love your analysis so much that I think it could be really cool and interesting to see your thoughts on that mixtape!! 💜

👥 I CLICKED SO FAST. One of my favorite songs!!! This is one of the songs from their album, Map of the Soul, which is based on the studies and book of psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s Map of the Soul which talks about Persona, Shadow and Ego. Shadow is done by Suga while Persona by RM and Ego by J-hope. You guys got it on point. This is kind of what Suga and BTS feel and go through as they gain success. I believe a lot of people who chase their dreams and are slowly gaining success totally relate to this.

👥 SUGA's lyricism usually is emotional and raw. He puts is feelings out there and presents things as they are, no sugar coating, but usually with a hint of optimism. He is also an amazing story teller. The thug SUGA you guys have seen so far only shows up in specific tracks. He is very multi layered when it comes to music, both lyrically and sonically, since he produces almost all of his solo track too. If you ever want to experience that in full I would recommend listening to his mixtapes AgustD and D-2.

You're absolutely right about how hard it is to not make fame go to ur head. And I think bts are very aware of that and actively try to stay true to themselves. Of course they've changed over the years but almost every person that comes in contact with them say that they're just as respectful and humble as they were 8 years ago. I think it's a result of all the struggles they've had over the years but also the constant acknowledgment that army has supported them along the way

Shadow in the Map of the Soul represents the part of yourself you are always trying to repress. I feel Yoongi js tal,ing about his socual anxiety/depressikn that Yoongi has battled with. Map of the soul is finding the way to bring your Persona(the face you put out to the world) your Shadow( your inner demons) a d then coming to terms resu,ting in Ego. RM sings PERSKNA, Yoongi sings SHADOW, and finally J-Hope sings EGO. Search Carl Jung's theories, this RM'S inspiration for tbe MAP OF THE SOUL, PERSONA and MAP of the SOUL 7.💜

I think you guys should also react to DKDKTVs explanations. Becs this is part of their album concept. So the shadow hes talking abt isnt his shadow being cast on OTHERS, but his dark side his shadows that he is hiding. The album is derived from carl jungs teachings, so the “persona” of a human is by RM, shadow by suga and the “EGO” side by Jhope. This album talks about human mind and how balancing out our parts are important to attain individualism. In the end sugas shadow (in red, aggressive tones, the song switches up in music too, another brilliance by producer suga) the shadow suga sings to him youre me im you we can never be seperated, we are the same. Yes you guys nailed it!

If you’re going to do this song then you GOTTA do Into: Persona and Outro: Ego too since they all 3 go together to tell the story of the Map of the Soul album series. They represent Jung’s map of the soul theory and tie it to their own journeys of self. 💜

I requested your reaction to this music video and you guys did not disappoint! There are some different interpretations of the concept of shadow. Suga is I think one of the fan favorites because of his deeply raw, vulnerable, honest lyrics especially evident in in his 2 mixtapes. His songs Agust D and Daechwita you’ve reacted to are more aggressive/cypher-like diss tracks but most of his other songs like First Love (which isn’t a love song) and The Last show you a different side of him. (Even Daechwita starts off almost braggadocious but he then he says “i wanna put my feet back on the ground” and kills off his tyrant self showing his development when he got to his 2nd mixtape). If you watch/read his interviews he is incredibly well-spoken, intelligent, deeply expressive about his thoughts on music/state of society and what he is trying to accomplish with his writing and producing. Please react to the live version of his song “First Love” which was the first Suga song I ever listened to and made me instantly a fan. There is a version with the lyrics on the screen.

"Two idiots like us"? Hardly. You did an excellent analysis catching the application of Jungian psychology used here without actually attributing the psychological theories which were being referenced. Map of the Soul songs such as Shadow, Persona, and Ego all refer to aspects of the human Psyche in Jungian theory and songs such as Black Swan and On address Jung's concept of individuation. These ideas are presented in applied form as opposed to in literal recitation which makes them personal, emotional, and relatable even if we are unfamiliar with or inattentive to the underlying Jungian skeleton.
