The idea that Ray ducked Pryor is completely foolish... Pryor couldn't get a shot at Lightweight & moved to Super Light in '80. He didn't fight Arguello until Nov '82 & rematched with him in fall '83. Pryor was 5'6" & didn't move up to fight any of the great Welters of the early '80s. He didn't fight Benitez, Cuevas, Duran, Hearns or Leonard. It's not an insult to him. He simply wasn't in their weight class... Considering how close Pryor was to Arguello, it's like arguing that both of them could have competed with that group of Welters. That simply isn't the case... Furthermore, Leonard fought Benitez in late '79 followed by Duran twice & Hearns before '82. He squeezed in two more fights before '82 including moving up & winning a Super Welter title over undefeated Ayub Kalule. After beating Bruce Finch in Feb '82 he retired with a detached retina (for two years)... Again, Pryor hadn't faced Arguello yet.
@cooljeb38 жыл бұрын
Why didn't Leonard fight Hagler in the late 70s and early 80s? Are you really asking that question? The fight that we're on is Leonard vs Andy Price, it took place in Sept. 79. Two months later, Leonard fought Benitez in his first world title fight. That night on the same card, Hagler finally got a shot at the middleweight title against Vito Antuofermo!!!! The fight ended in a draw. Hagler didn't win the title until a year later!!! Leonard between the first & second Duran fights, at that time. Leonard wasn't cherry picking at middleweight during that time. It was established that Hagler was two weights up. I laid out the dates of his fights through Finch (& retirement)!!! From fall '79 through '82 he fought at welterweight. Only the Kalule fight was at jr middle (he weighed under the '54 limit, easily). He only came back ONCE in '84. That was against Kevin Howard after two years off - at WELTER!!! He then quit again for 3 years, only to come back when he thought he could beat Hagler. So, it wasn't about avoiding Hagler as champ. Hell, they weren't close to the same weight. Leonard wasn't fight ANY middleweights... Now, did he see that Hagler was vulnerable when he did come back years later? Yeah, he did...

Howard Cosell is right, this was just a stunning KO at the time. Leonard's camp had been criticized before this fight of protecting him, so they had him take on Price, as a lot of boxers avoided him. But what an impressive KO. Just a blistering assault of punches by Ray. Before the start of this video, Cosell mentioned that Price had never been off his feet (though he did have two KO losses) making this all the more impressive.

Pryor AND Mayweather too small to mess with Ray. Pryor was a jr. welter. It was not worth the risk for Ray to drop weight, and it woulda been suicide for Pryor to move up. Mayweather might have had a shot at welter but he's a short welter. Ray and Tommy Hearns woulda been too much for him in their primes.

True. Andy felt Ray was quick, but in pinching exchanges he could outfox him. His corner warned him about Ray’s power and he ignored them, at his peril. Price was a tricky fighter who could lull other fighters into making mistakes, then capitalize on that. That strategy would never work against Leonard.

Absolutely amazing to me Price beat Palomino and Cuevas. He was a PERFECT pick as Leonard's last fight before the title shot. He'd lost 4X in the prior 3 years, with only two world class but not quite chap caliber opponents (Harold Weston and Dave Boy Green, both losses) in that time frame and, as Cosell aptly noted a minute before the stoppage, he is vulnerable to the right. What else could be expected of a guy carrying his left like he was playing with himself? Otherwise, typical inept ref, being behind the fighters when they went to the ropes, so slow to intervene and costing Price about 3 clean shots after he was out on his feet with both hands dropped. By contrast, you will never seen Mills Lane anywhere but on the side once the fighters are on the ropes.
