Allready kitted with torsen, rollcage, yellow koni coils, etc etc. Plans for a turbo-miata has violated my head for ages and now i plan to make it reallity, the right way.. not haggard-way =) Been following you for a while now and must say i love your miata and im really looking forward to see your build! My son and I are building his NB...So far our build is identical! We are going Fab9 side mount, EFR 6758 40mm Turbosmart, 4 port controller, 5 pound gate spring, tuned on 94 (we are Canadian), fab9/AEM coil on plug, and precision intercooler....For a start. We are flirting with the 7163...Hoping to coerce you into trying it haha! I think we are going to try the RX7 gear box and accept 4 good gears and one cruise gear...This is not going to be a track car of course...will be autocross (only need two gears for that :) ) ...Still have to run some number and see if I can make the best of a crappy transmission situation. We can't wait to see what your build consists of!

Doing a similar build for my 1.8 right now, as is my friend. We both ordered a set of super-techs from Fab9 but they called us to say they were on national backorder for about 2 weeks (I called last week). But Fab9 hooked us up with wiseco pistons instead for a slight loss on their end so we wouldn't have to delay. Would recommend Fab9 for what they did for us. Can't wait to see you finish the build greg and maybe if you're ever in Texas you can see ours :) keep up the awesome content.

You'll really like the Supertechs. I run them in my endurance race car and they work awesome. I don't need to idle the car forever before I go out for my warm up laps. The only thing is the snap rings are a HUGE pain in the ass to get in; fingers bleed, egos are crushed, life ending. Make sure the machine shop knows that theses are not the typical 6061 AL but the 5032 (? I think can't remember the exact ally off the top of my head). The piston to wall clearance formula is much different. Supertech uses NPR rings. I haven't had a problem with mine but I am N/A so they are low stress. I normally change the NPR rings out to Hastings racing rings on the cast piston builds I do.

Greg just want to say thank you so much for your videos. They are so well done and informative. I'm an old school motor head myself. Where I struggle now is with high tech tuning. Any way I love your epic 1.8 build and just drool at the parts you've got. I have a 2002 Miata. Couple questions though. Why did you go with Volvo springs vs Comp cams or some other high performance aftermarket? The head being so critical to horsepower, you could just do a polish yourself. It's fun and easy. You'd love it. Could you explain a cooling re-route on a 2002 or above. Can't tell if it's needed with the new headgasket design. One last thing if you could explain how to tell if the VVT is working. Thanks again and your videos are great. Doug T.
@Joshf93.8 жыл бұрын
Awesome vid Greg! this is EXACTLY the route i would of gone down if i was building a VVT block apart from the pistons, i would of stuck with 83mm but hey if you've got the block stripped and you dont mind taking it to get machined then why not right? Cant wait for the end result man!
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
You know I probably would have, but both Wiseco and Supertech only offer 83.5mm as the smallest bore, so my choice was either to go with stock pistons and be stuck at 10:1 compression, or bore up. CP makes 83mm versions but they're nearly $600. In hindsight I may have opted for 83.5's but I think I'll be safe still.

i was following mightcarmods and haggard and some others, but i didn't really enjoy watch their videos. They seemed too shady about the technical sides...and not telling all information following too much steoreotypes, or giving basic/simple minded information not considering risks, reliability, and having a car that works fine on more than a track day. I found you because the video was related while watching, the episode in which haggard mounted a turbo out of the hood in the mx5. Next year i'm going to buy an mx5 (don't know which model or year) because of this channel, if i was going to follow the trend i was going to buy some less cheap and worth car, and just for the hype of the moment. You're doing a great job, i didn't understand when your engine blew, because i follow you just on youtube. Maybe it's like you said and i lost some part because of other social medias. Higher compression is achieved by freeing up more Fuel Octane. Aggressive cam profiles reduce fuel octane requirement and increase high RPM torque and power, but at a cost of fuel economy, low RPM torque and a rough idle due to the engine pushing air out of both the intake and exhaust ports. Rich fuel mixture also reduces Fuel Octane substantially and increases power slightly but at a high fuel economy cost. Running too high of a ratio will make the engine run rich thus decreasing overall performance. The optimum is 14.7:1 (14.7 parts of air to 1 part of fuel) to fully burn the fuel. Compression Increases horsepower and fuel economy at Fuel Octane cost, but above 10:1 compression ratio, you're using too much octane for little power benefit (for non turbo engines). There's a lot more but these play a main role in how your engine feels, produces power and at what economy.
@svriderpokey8 жыл бұрын
You're such a badass. That's going to be a bitchun motor, for sure. Congratulations. Will you still be using the Megasquirt? I didn't know that could do VVT. I'm really looking forward to see what you do for a valve train.

Will you rebalance your crank? Maybe together with the flywheel? This will get you a smoother engine run. Its just a little thing but as smoother the engine is running it'll last longer and gets maybe a bit more power.

These engines do have bad harmonics when you go forced induction (isn't a problem if you're just NA as they don't make a lot of power), one way to address this is to have the rotating assembly balanced at a machine shop. Eliminate the problem at the source. I see the ATI damper as more of a band-aid solution. It also doesn't cost nearly as much to have the rotating assembly balanced. If you're stripping the engine apart to replace rods and pistons you may as well get the rods, pistons, crankshaft, flywheel, clutch and even stock pulley balanced while it's apart

Nope. I wanted something that would be plenty safe on 91 octane since it's a flex fuel setup. I wouldn't change a thing about the motor itself!

Question: could you explain how the harmonic damper works? Do you reduce the vibrations by running a heavier damper (lowering the resonating frequency), or is it a similar weight to the stock pulley but just has better dampening capabilities? I'm contemplating removing the acc bit on the stock pulley of my BP6D as I don't need it and figured it would remove most of the vibrations induced by the spinning pulley. Thanks! +thecarpassionchannel

Hey Greg, I have a question. I bought and installed the Cometic MLS head gasket you recommended. After torquing my head bolts to lowest spec I ended up having a small oil leak after running. I'm going to try torquing a second time and maybe going a bit higher. Before I do though I wanted to ask if you had to do a second torque on your HG or if you got it on right after the first try. Should I be worried? Also, what ft-lb did you use for yours exactly? I'd like to try hitting the same number. Thanks for reading Greg, and thanks for everything you do for us!
@TheCarPassionChannel7 жыл бұрын
I have not installed the head yet. I believe it's 65lb-ft with ARP studs, but stock bolts will be lower than that. If you check out my crankshaft install video (recent) there's a link in the description that will take you to a PDF with all engine torque specs
