She was the side chick begging the man to stay with her. Then she was fed up with being promised they were going to be together, he was going to get a divorce and be with her. She realizes that she is getting played and tells him to stay with his wife because he can't give her what she needs. Her voice is perfection! Thanks for the reaction!!

No Sir. She was telling him to stay with his mistress. She is very much a savant. She did the song from her husband's mistress perspective and at the same time her own. She got fucked over hy the man she vowed to spend the rest of her life with. She planned for her headstone to be next to his. I wish people would actually think and invest in their relationships. If you want to die alone then don't worry about doing so.

Great reaction. There was no switch. Listen again from the the start from the perspective of the side check, front to back. At the bridge, she realizes she deserves better, starts realizing how much time and love she’s wasted on the player, so in the last chorus, she tells him he can’t give her what she needs, so the next time he wants a side piece, and wifey begs him not to go, stay home with the wife. BTW, Jennifer was going through a divorce at the time after finding out her husband had been unfaithful, so you can see where the pain is coming from. Cheers!

She wasn't going thru a divorce. She was singing this song from the heart, yes. The emotion was very real. But she wasn't even married when they did this song. But the song by Reba and Linda Davis, "Does He Love You",and the Reba song When who evers in New England was the first part of this scenario, and when Jennifer sat down to weite the song, She WAS singing from the point of view of someone who was the other woman, and imagined what it would be like to finally come to the realization that he was never gonna leave his wife.

It’s part of what makes this song hit so hard. She is singing from the perspective of the “side chick” but in her real life she was the wife. It’s the double meaning and pain of the lyrics. The next time you think to leave her bed for mine, why don’t you stay. I’m up off my knees. I don’t have to live this way. You can’t give me what I need so why don’t you stay (in the bed that’s not mine). It fit the song and also sadly fit her personal life as well.

When listening to country, you will find that lyricism is a very common art, and one of the most notable is a twist on the double entendre. It's not at all uncommon for one phrase to have two or more meanings, but the meaning changes as the song develops. In this, "why don't you stay" through must of the song is asking why he doesn't leave the wife already and stay with her.. in the last portion, she's realized that she's going in something that isn't going to happen, so "why don't you stay" becomes next time you think of coming over, you should stay home, cause I'm over it. The artist was going through some hard times in her own life which added to her ability to just overflow with emotion, even though the story itself isn't her own. In writing the song, she said there are many songs from the viewpoint of the wife, but she wanted to explore what is going on in the mind of the side chick. On another note, there were a few copies early in the sing that she was the side that you missed. She said when he got the call, he would go home. It would probably be worth just listening to the song (and many others for that matter) on your own after. Once the meaning becomes apparent, you can hear the story with that in mind and you will pick up on more of the subtle things. Last thing.. if you want one of the best songs that fleshes out the double entendre aspect, I would suggest Tim McGraw's Don't Take The Girl. The chorus evolves every time it's repeated to present a powerful story.

Jennifer Nettles wrote this song after her relationship dissolved because of her husband’s infidelity. She’s not just a beautiful voice. She understood the pain of her “rival”. I have been in "her" shoes. While I have never slept with another woman's man, for years I have in love with one of my best friend and he didn't know. He never knew. And it would slowly kill me. And when I heard this song, "It's too much pain to have to bear to love a man you have to share" , i understood that I couldn't keep going like this. I slowly pulled away from him, from our friendship, for the sake of my mental health and my heart. Years later, I have been in love with someone else. I have been with him for 8 years now. However, to be honest, in the anonymity of the Internet, my boyfriend has to share my heart,. Because even though I am not close to the other guy anymore, he is still very good friends with my brother, so I still see him from time to time. And I still feel this little clutch in my heart every time I do. And it reminds me I did the right thing by pulling away.

That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; Leave My Heart Out of This by Bryan White; I'm Not Strong Enough to Say No by Blackhawk; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks.

The tears in this video are 100% real and Christian (guitarist and the other half of Sugarland) told the director to keep filming when he suggested they stop filming to let her get herself together. he said this was real and raw and was important for people to see the real emotion and pain to get the message across

Jennifer Nettles has such a raw talent, her song Unlove you is kinda like the prelude to this one even though it was recorded after this

She was the wife. Her man was with the side chick. She loved him so much she wanted him to stay, but he thought thry weren't good anymore. So he just kept going back. She had enough, and said "stay with her: cuz she couldn't take it anymore. You have to see her sing that on the Grammys.

She's singing from the side chick perspective. In the last verse, she says "the next time you find that you want to leave her bed (his wife's bed) for mine, why don't you stay? (Meaning, stay home with his wife) She goes on to say that she's finally up off of her knees (she's no longer begging him to stay with her) and that HE can't give Her what she needs (a man totally devoted to her). It's a story about a man lying to both his wife and his mistress telling each that he wants to be with her.

When she sang this, she was going through a divorce because her husband cheated. So powerful and understanding. It's not the other woman it's the lying man. He is lying to the girlfriend, the wife and most to himself that is not at fault for everyone's pain.

First two verses she's the other woman, but in the last verse she stands up to him and tells him to stay with his wife and that she's done with him. In real life, this song was already in the works when she (Jennifer Nettles) found out that her husband was cheating on her. She was going through a divorce when this video was filmed. It was their wedding rings on that chain she was holding. The guitarist (Christian Bush) wouldn't let them film her more than once... he said no more, it's too painful for her. Such an incredible performance she gave. She won two Grammys and a bunch of other awards for the song and the video, so I'm sure that helped her to get over her ex!

This song is a tear jerker, but the side chicks know what they're getting into when they start the relationship.

Haha! This is great. 😂 She was the side chick all along. In love and begging him to choose her. In the end, she got tired and woke up and found herself and her strength and told him to stay with his wife. Haha. It was fun watching you figure it out. ❤
