I have the Libre 14 day one and I love it. I would be dead without it as I am not crazy about sticking my fingers all the time. I have been using it for 2.5 months. I was recently diagnosed diabetic and have been prescribed 500 mgs of Metformin 2x a day. Have had no problems, really. One time a sensor came off while I was sleeping which I found weird. I usually have to use an adhesive remover to get it off. I tend to be a little obsessive and scan my sensor several times a day. It has helped me see a pattern with my blood glucose levels. After eating and taking my medicine than exercising around noon, I now know between 4 and 7 pm, my glucose starts to drop and I need food. The Libre also helps me decide what foods to eat and avoid. If I do eat something "bad" like pancakes, I know I better exercise. I also know if I ear something good like a ham, cheese and broccoli omelet for breakfast, I better have a snack after exercising. It is also encourages me to continue with my new lifestyle changes but I have been keeping my blood glucose under 180..really 160 after eating. My only problem is my glucose tends to drop below 70. As I know this will happen, I am prepared with snacks. My new eating habits also mean my doctor isn't going to up my metformin because the Freestyle Libre shows how consistently my blood glucose is under control. .

Abbott (makers of Freestyle Libre) has taken the early failure rate of their sensors (much worse with old 10-day sensors than the currently approved 14-day sensors) very seriously, even for glue on the sensor failing. I started using the Freestyle Libre very early on and due to having Medicare and just falling short of the Medicare requirements at the time, paid out-of-pocket for the Libre Scanner and Sensors (which over 2 years & changing to the 14-day system) and cost about $50-100 USD/month. Every time I had a sensor fail for any reason during that time, Abbott replaced my failed sensors free-of-charge. I can say that, personally, I have not experienced ANY sensor failures in quite some time...even as far back as last summer where I was surprised that the heat from a midday NCAA football game, as a spectator, in the hot west Texas sun, there were no sensors lost. In fact, I now have to use adhesive remover (available from most pharmacies either as a liquid in a bottle, or on swabs, like alcohol swabs) most times after the 14 days are over, then clean that and the new site with the alcohol swabs. I have found that having the Freestyle meter built into the Scanner(Receiver) rather convenient, as well as having the test strips individually wrapped extremely convenient, as I no longer use 50 test strips in a single month. I am switching to the DexCom G6 this weekend but plan to continue to use the Freestyle scanner/meter as my primary meter especially for the small amount of blood used and easy-to-use, individually wrapped test strips because I refuse to use whatever brand Medicare has chosen this year, & waste a month’s supply of test strips because I opened them, used one strip and the rest have to be discarded in 30 days. The Freestyle meter/test strips actually use the smallest blood sample required, 0.03 microliters, the same as the One Touch Ultra, as this was the entire reason 19 years ago that the Freestyle system was invented. I was very fortunate to be an early adopter of that meter when choosing my second meter. My first meter was used about 5 years earlier (yes, more than 25 years ago) and required 25 microliters of blood (75 TIMES MORE), as I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia. I could barely stand to poke my finger and only did so when I felt close to passing out from low blood sugar. 10 years after my hypoglycemia diagnosis, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at age 35. Medicare has been my primary insurance since about that time and whichever company got the contract for meters & strips was what I had to use. I am very fortunate to have a secondary full coverage insurance policy which has been very useful as I was also diagnosed with an antibody immunodeficiency at 29, & drs out there will understand that I receive 60 g of a very expensive drug, called IVIG, every 21 days. Not only did I still owe $30 on my Medicare deductible Monday of last week (end of Feb) but I also went “catastrophic” during this past weekend’s trip to the pharmacy. Life-altering diseases were not new to me when diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes really stinks, there is no denying that fact. But every endocrinologist I’ve had or known will say that it is treatable, that there are things we can/must do differently from other people...no more extra-large buckets of popcorn at the movies and counting every carb of food we eat, sometimes having to take shots with insulin and having to test our blood sugar before & after major activities. It USED to mean that some career choices were no longer pen to us. But through progress in education and in treating the disease, we continue to overcome obstacles that, when I was 7 and helping my grandmother, who was only a few years older than I am now, read labels because she had diabetic retinopathy so bad that she was legally blind, all I have to do is look at my completely valid driver’s license through reading glasses that are somewhat typical for my age, and pray that the next generation of children only know about diabetes because a grandparent may still be dealing with it.

Excellent introductory video to CGM devices. Carefully detailed and delivered in a human, even occasionally humorous manner. Thanks! That said I have been a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic for 46 years. I started on one shot a day NPH insulin (horrible stuff...totally unpredictable!) and have been on a wide variety of other insulin regimes since then. Currently I inject Levemir twice a day as a basal insulin and use Novolog as a preprandial insulin. I was an early adopter of home blood glucose monitoring and have been doing this since 1980. My first bG meter was imported from England as American meters were simply both extremely inconvenient to use and woefully inaccurate. My diabetes has always been extremely difficult to control and after 40 years and nearly 150,000 bG tests (I average 10 tests a day and at times have had to take as many as 15 tests a day) I simply can not believe how little meter accuracy has improved even as bG strip prices have skyrocketed! While meter manufacturers continue to claim meter accuracy of from 15 to 20% they fail to make clear that range varies from 15 to 20% low to 15 to 20% high. In other words readings can potentially be off by 40%! Try telling a carpenter that the ruler you are selling him can be as much as 40% off and see what he says! And as if that were not already bad enough a hospital group in the midwest ran a meticulous series of comparison tests between finger prick tests and veinous bG sample tests run by skilled hospital personnel and commonly found meter errors in excess of 35%! Eight to ten years ago I was asked to write an article on bG meter accuracy. I approached 3 meter manufacturers and asked for approval for 3 free bG meters and 500 test strips for use in running comparitive meter accuracy tests. I then randomly obtained the meters and supplies at different area pharmacies. This ensured that the manufacturers could not affect test results by sending me "special" meters. Long story short, I terminated my tests after only 5 days as results were so erratic in both accuracy and repeatability as to make further testing a waste of my time. When you add in the time lag effect between actual blood glucose and interstitial bG levels I find myself wondering just how useful cgm devices can be in Type 1 patients like myself with unpredictable bG fluctuations?

I find the libre simple and easy to use, no issues. It also has alarms, and you can set your glucose range as well, as well as set alarms for 30 mins, 1hr ect. But the graphs it gives on the Phone app very useful in seeing how you are managing the glucose at meal time.

I look forward to reading more about the EverSense system as development progresses. Personally, I've experienced roughly a 33% failure rate with my Dexcom G6 sensors. Dexcom is always ready to supply replacements, and has a convenient live chat support feature on their website where I can order a free new sensor in minutes. Still... ONE OUT OF THREE failures? If these were cars or motorcycles, the company stock would crash, not rise as it's been doing. Now, I have started using the Tandem t:slim x2 insulin pump. It depends on accurate BGs from the G6 for proper basal dosing. Jury is still out on this new arrangement, but I definitely keep my OneTouch VerioFlex and Admelog SoloStar pens nearby.

I am using FreeStyle Libre with NightRider to get alarms, earlier I had Dexcom G6. I found Libre sensor with NightRider BluCon is best alternative to Dexcom G6, it is as good as Dexcom G6 and a lot cheaper. I really like its capability to directly connect to Apple Watch which even Dexcom G6 was not able to do.

I use the Libre' and my brother uses Dexcom. So far the libre' is working better hands down. It is easier to order, I don't hit it on anything, whereas he is always bumping his sensor. I have had no issues with my sensors yet he has had his disconnect several times. Also it is sad when my cat alerted us 30 minutes before the Dexcom that he was heading into a dangerous low reading. By the time the Dexcom alarm went off, I had already been treating the issue. Customer services is also better with Libre', I don't feel like I'm talking to a comedy act who can't get it together.

You should let your patients know about certain 3rd party devices you can use with the Libre sensors-one In particular is the Blucon nightrider which I use and has the ability to turn the Libre into a full blown cgm. It can be used in conjunction with the linkblucon app which provides speech and audible alarms as well. In my opinion, this setup gives you better and more accurate results than the dexcom g6-I have used both. The blucon nightrider system allows for calibrations to be done and this is the game changer because it gives much more accurate results when your blood sugar is dropping.

paul G thanks for the comment. We can’t recommend non FDA a approved, not tested and not studied options to the patients. Safety is upmost important. Everybody is free to try anything they feel appropriate but it will be their own discretion. Yet, I am responsible for the safety of my patients. That’s why I can’t recommend experimental or non FDA approved treatments.

Respectfully, after 40 yrs of type 1 diabetes I don't look to the FDA for answers to improving my control-they move at a ridiculously slow pace when it comes to approving technological advancements for diabetes. The other issue is with the ADA and their recommendations on the diabetic diet, specifically the amount of carb intake. Frankly I don't see how they can justify 250 grams per day-I consume less than 50 grams per day and use a 10 yr old animas insulin pump with the libre/blucon setup to achieve an A1C of 5.2 So many diabetics misuse insulin pumps thinking it's an open invitation to a carb feast- I know so many diabetics on pumps who's A1c's are in the double digits because they don't follow the low carb requirements. I'm not sure if you know of Dr. Richard Bernstein and his book The Diabetic Solution-it is the single most impressive book I've encountered in achieving close to normal control of blood sugars. For some reason Endocrinologists don't acknowledge this incredible physician who is a type 1 diabetic himself for six decades

paul G I agree. Every individual is different and one formula or one device doesn’t fit all. Guidelines are for starters and patients should not blindly follow a guideline without analyzing their individual situation with their diabetes doctor they trust. I am using the BluCon with the FreeStyle libre over 2 years, and getting exactly same readings as the Libre Reader. I spoke to a number of so called FDA experts and as per them no FDA approval is required for BluCon becuase it's like a wire, displaying the same information what it's readings from the Libre sensor, and it's matching with the Libre reader. IMO FreeStyle Libre and Blucon system is far superior than the Dexcom G6 becuase system offers all what Dexcom G6 has plus it can directly connect to Apple watch even without the phone which Dexcom announced a couple of years ago but due to technical challenges they are not able to launch, earlier I started with Dexcom system but it was painful and complicated to use so I started using the Libre with blucon and never missed Dexcom for a split of second

My wife is currently using the Dexcom G6 and loves it, no issues ever and her A1C has dropped by a huge amount. All her data is transmitted to her receiver every 5 minutes so it's a quick glance to see her BG and alarms if she goes high or low. But being in the US with our backwards health system, her insurance company decided they know more than her doctors at the Mayo Clinic and said she needs to switch to the Libre. So now she needs to buy a $1,000+ phone with NFC or a new receiver, and even with that she will not know her BG unless she gets her reader within NFC range, so now she will be stuck with a system that's not really any better than finger sticks. Meanwhile her cousin in Scotland has her system covered fully by whatever her doctor prescribes.

I tried Ambrosia Blucon and it is working fine with my libre for the past 8 months. Also, My mother tried Dexcom G6 which worked for 4 months not more than that which made my mind to go with Blucon. Now we both are using Blucon and the best features are its battery and it gives direct readings in my watch too.

Just FYI G6 app is compatible with certain phone. Please mention this in your video too. So that patient should check if their current device is compatible or not. My Motorola G stylus is not compatible.

The libra has been pretty spot on for us.. the only bad thing is the range. My son has had to sleep in my room because it doesn't transmit very far and he gets low at night. Lastnight the libre went off and said 61 tending down quickly. Finger stick showed 58. We are only doing dexcom g6 due to the integration with tandem slim.

I used to have a dexcom and loved it. Then I retired and went to a medicare advantage plan. They said they wouldn't cover the dexcom and it was too expensive with all the other medical problems I have. Just got the libre two days ago. It will not stick to my arm. In fact when the nurse was showing me how to put it on she turned away to pick up the reader and when she turned around, it was gone. Fell on the floor. She tried a second one with the same result. The third one she taped all the way around my arm to hold it (tape wouldn't stick to me either). I don't know what to do now. Also the libre only seems to transfer data when I manually use my phone to read it. How do you get a low warning in the middle of the night (when mine always seem to occur) if it isn't continuously reporting?

My doctor put me on the G6. It was wonderful. However, when I had to switch insurance companies, the new insurer wouldn't cover the g6, just the libre. (On this regard, the American medical system sucks.) It wasn't a true CGM like the dexcom, but a separate device (MiaoMiao) made it work as such. (Gave me alarms too.) However, I've had it CONSTANTLY get knocked off. I'm not sure what IDIOT thought the arm would be a good place to keep something like this, but unless you live a life that involves doing ABSOLUTELY nothing all the time, then it's going to get knocked off. I think the worst part is that the thing could work great if they only made it a bit bigger. I just don't think it's big enough to have enough surface area to get a good grip. (I also think the fact that the g6 has that bit of cloth extending from the device helps a lot.) I have had a few just randomly stop working too. (Happened when I was trying unrecommended alternative sites.) I even put skin-Tak on my arm before attaching and a dressing over it, but it often doesn't help.

Sugar md, I am in the process of losing weight , fortunately I do not have diabetes, but I was looking at both manufacturers to find out different foods might affect my blood sugar ex rice, potatoes etc basically foods high in starch or carbohydrates...basically watch I am trying to say is that I am looking for a monitor that would give me a real time blood sugar reading after eating certain foods to know which to avoid. I‘ve requested the dexcon g6 coming from the Libre freestyle 2 to my endocrinologist. Ever since the second generation of Abbot‘s Libre Freestyle Chips I‘ve had difficulties with my blood glucose values. Either it measures way too high or way to low and thus I‘m doing wrong calculations with my insulin therapy. I‘ve had contact with their service and they are nice and anything but I think it‘s time for me to move away from Abbot. Looking forward to the dexcom g6 !

Good video but when suggesting G6 as being better for patients who experience more lows, is that based on results from finger sticks or physical symptoms? I currently have a Libre 1 for the last year and it typically read 20 points lower than a finger stick but you mention that the Libre is not so accurate at the lower BG levels. Needless to say it reports I have more lows when in actuality I am fine according to finger sticks but I know there is typically a 15-20 minute difference whereby the libre will more closely match a finger stick when I do a reading later than the finger stick. My concern is, especially when I don't feel symptoms of being low, should I continue with the libre or switch to the G6 or maybe the libre 2. Also, it appears the built meter is way off with finger sticks vs my One Touch Verio or even the libre sensor typically reading server points lower than either.

I just got my Freestyle Libre. Type 2 here. So you talk a lot about accuracy and lows. I'm hoping you are talking mostly about type 1 diabetics. I've only had my Libre just a few days and I never experience low lows...NEVER...BUT I've been scanning quite a lot and I have to say my scans are showing lower than what I've ever been used to so for me they are lows. The lowest I've had is 89. Which I just want to do a happy dance because of that... but how am I supposed to know if that is accurate? I have checked with a finger stick and they are close but not exact. I have to say I've been absolutely perfect with my diet and I do fast 36 hours 3 times a week and I'm exercisting at least 3 X a week. I've been making sure to get my good sleep in. So maybe I really am experiencing these good numbers but I'd sure like to know about the accuracy. Guess I'll have to wait 3 months for next A1c to see for sure. Also I am not on any medications for anything. I am 73 years old.

i had a freestyle and my reading were NEVER close to finger sticks or A1C. They just switched me to dexacon Cgm, which can be calibrated to the finger stick readings. I wouldn't get too happy about the libre as its readings can be way off for some and never come close to blood testing or a1c3 readings. My readings show lots of lows and very. rarely went high, but my blood sticks were mostly how and never below 70.

I've had huge failures of the G6 sensor. You hear 1 click instead of 2 and the sensor itself doesn't separate from the injector. They replace the defective sensors, which is expected considering the huge price they charge you. Dexcom is still my choice along with the integrated Tandem T-slim X2 and Dexcom will fix this issue.

I like the performance and accuracy of Dexcom but it's out of pocket so I'm using Blucon on top of the Libre sensor which gives all the feature of Dexcom. Blucon with Lirbe sensor is still 1/3 of the cost of dexcom

Dexcom G6 is awesome, its easy peasy and the no fingersticks makes it much more manageable. I had the Medtronic Guardian, and it SUCKED, so I switched to the Dexcom G6 and it was amazing. When I got the new Medtronic 770G pump, i figured I would give the Guardian system a try again, nope, still sucks. It was a turd before, and now its a turd with bluetooth. I cannot wait to go to the Tandem system.

I'm a type 1 diabetic, I've tried both, and personally I prefer the Freestyle Libre. For all the type 1's out there, if you haven't heard of Afrezza inhaled insulin, check it out. Total game changer for me.

I have been using FS Libre 2 for 3 months. The alarm for false readings is driving me crazy. It wakes me up 2-3 times a night saying that I am in the 50-60s. When I do a finger stick I am usually 90-110. They must allow a way to turn off alarms or I am going to quit.

so yes the pricier ones are actually better while freestyle feels more for budget diabetic patients.. but i do take fast acting 3 times and slow one that is Lantus 1 time... but my endocrinologist gave me freestyle which also i was told by some people that the sensor are not sometimes covered. how well are these on shower or pools?? and what other spots i can try it on for less contact with other stuffs..

This freestyle libre is one of the worse products on the market. These past months I have come accross several defective sensors. All abbott did was to replace them sometimes with other defective sensors. My last prescription were two bad sensors. I had to remove a bad one from my son's harm only to find out the second one was as bad. Impossible to have any reading, just Er messsages. I can't tell you the frustration of having to deal with this issue. Why don't they just issue a recall! I don't understand. Not to mention the fact that they wrongfully claim that the warming time would be 1hour with the 14day sensor. I have to wait 12 hours to be able to make the first reading on a good sensor. Bottom line this is a bad product. I guess you pay for what you get. An angry and hurt mom

My daughter has been on it for two years. We've only had 2 bad sensors and Abbott replaced them with no problem. All in all we love the freestyle system. Give it a little more time.

@@dawns5499 my son has been using it for more than 2 years. Everything was fine until they switched us to the 14 day. The warm up period was supposed to be 1hour. On several occasions I had to prick his finger while he was sleeping because I was unable to get a reading after one hour. The last two sensors I got were defective as well. It happened in all 4 times the past 6 months. Last time I spoke to a representative he said they are working on a new product that should solve the pb. Meaning they are well aware of the issue. Anyway I hope it does a better job.

I have used G6 and G7 and they are great however their alarm tone and volume suck like no tomorrow, I don’t need to wake up the entire neighborhood with my alarm . libre three is my favorite , I learned that the reading is going to be forty points higher than the finger stick and thirty minutes behind the finger stick and I’m ok with that , I know where I’m heading thanks to the trending arrows

I take the slow acting and the fast acting insuline , my A1C between 5.6 and 5.8 , pretty awesome , the more physically active the better the less insuline you have to take

I guess i've been quite lucky with the libre then :D I've been using the Libre for 2 1/2 years and the Libre 2 for the last 6 months and so far, i've got only one failed sensor (due to painful bloody insertion, never gave plausible readings, got a new one for free). Can't complain about accuracy, typically within +/-10mg/dl if not rapidly raising or sinking, the worst off i've bloodily confirmed were +35mg/dl during rapid rising above 250mg/dl. Haven't noticed that the low glucose readings were as bad as described, typically when rapidly sinking into a hypo, the libre (2) will warn / predict a lower glucose than you measure bloodily at that point in time but not the other way around.

I’m using a trial of the libre and so far it’s worked well for me. I know my symptoms when I have lows and having it alert me when urgently low is nice. I am considering the tandem tslim pump. I hear it works well with the dexcom, but does it work as well with the libre or should I consider switching? I have been out of my honeymoon phase for a little while and my blood sugar levels are all over the place. Hence the pump consideration.

Hello, if someone is giving 3 injections a day. aka Lantus SoloStar, once a day Humulin 70/30 twice a day, is this considered 3 injections a day? I’ve been dragged through the the mud for 6 months trying too meet the criteria for a CGM. I’ve also been doing 4 finger sticks a day. When my Blood Sugar is going too drop, it doesn’t drop gracefully, I crash fast & hard. About 2 years ago I got up at midnight, started feeling weak. I tried to make a peanut butter sandwich. My blood sugar was dropping to fast. I called 911. When the paramedics got here. One noticed that my speech was slurred. I need to feel safe. The old way needs too be retired.

I have been on libre almost 2 months now. Wach sensor seems to fall off me after a day or 2. I follow instruction to clean area with alc swab and where to place. I sweat alot. If its waterproof it sure isnt sweatproof. Libre rep suggested liquid skin tec which too failed on me. Go on Amazon and get the SIM Patch it's like a water proof bandaid that will protect your sensor. The sensor is water proof but it will stick better with the patch and from bumping it or like sometimes it catches on my bra strap when I'm getting dressed. I've had great success with it!

I have been on the Minimed insulin pump over 30 years. My concern is that being on Medicare for a year now, the Guardian 3 sensor is not covered by Medicare although it is a perfect match for my Medtronic-Minimed 670G pump. I target tight control and my HbA1c runs 5.9 to 6.4 %. Since Medtronic does not consult me to help them get their sensor approved for Medicare coverage I may have to switch to a new insulin delivery system such as the T Slim with Dexcom G6 sensors. Do you have experience to compare differences to the Medtronic 670G with Guardian 3 sensors with another equal or better pump/CGM system?
