That is really funny to think about. In the escape from Death Mountain it is Flora who puts herself between Maleficent's army and Prince Phillip. People like to sleep on this movie because of Aurora being useless. When in reality, the movies main characters are the 3 fairies and their journey to protect the kingdom. Not to mention that for a movie made in the 1950's, its really progessive. -3 women and 1 man character is overweight and not shamed for it - the fairies, women leads, ultimately save the Prince who ends up in the damsel in distress role by being captured. -They protect him during battle and help him defeat Maleficent. -Prince Philip says 'screw arranged marriages' and does his own thing and his father (though reluctant) supports him.

For the record, they never indicated what age Prince Philip was, just that he was a lanky boy when he met the baby… I believe the story- quoting their quote of in “the 14th Century”- you’re considered ‘past your prime’ if you haven’t married/had kids by 18, and with folks only living until “maybe” their 30s or 40s (if they’re so lucky), it’s more possible he’s 18 or 19… That’s not to say Maleficent wasn’t still right in her approach, but still slightly different numbers we’re talking here. I’m not even gonna bring up the whole Pocahontas/John Smith debacle of Disney making her look 21 when she was really 11 & he was in his 40s at that time…
@BlancheNeigefanАй бұрын
The age thing is actually a misconception. The Western European marriage pattern, that emerged in the late Middle Ages / Early modern era featured two partners in their mid-twenties getting married after saving enough money, and this would have been the general rule for everyone but the nobility and other elites who bargained for their children like lifestock.
@BlancheNeigefanАй бұрын
Also, if you except all the people who died as children, most people would live on to their 50s in medieval England. It's only the average life expectancy at birth that was skewed by the people who died as babies
@AD-dg3zzАй бұрын
It's actually a myth that people only lived until their 30s or 40s before modern medicine. Lots of people lived until old age, it's just that the average was heavily offset by high infant mortality rates. If you managed to live past the age of 2, your chances of reaching 70 would drastically increase.

Seriously, why did she have to make **that** the way to break the spell?!

I know 16 is young in most places, and 18 should be the youngest it should happen (from the UK here so 18 is considered an adult), Disney was probably trying to keep it true to the actual historical age of being able to marry in the time it was set while also keeping it more innocent than the actual story. Aurora would have been considered an adult already in the Medieval times.

Prince Phillip isn't 23 years old 😅. He's moreso presumed to be around 19 or 20 years old. While the age gap still isn't very appropriate, it's far more tolerable than what people believe Phillip's age is. (And seeing how people nowadays like to exaggerate the other two Classic Disney Princes as well, might as well get them out of the way too. Prince Charming is close to 21 years old in Disney's Cinderella, and she was 19 years old. While Snow white is 14 years old, her prince, Prince Florian, was 18. He wasn't 31 years old as many people seem to believe that he is 😅)
@PanthersclawАй бұрын
18 marrying 14 is still yikes, even if he isn't 31. 14 is still underage for most countries back then.
@2gredvisions8560Ай бұрын
@@Panthersclaw That's earnestly a very agreeable statement on your end 😊. I'd apply what I said about Phillip and Aurora to Snow White and Florian as well. The ages are tolerable but still not very appropriate (even if you contrast it with the presumed age gap). But I do agree that it's still jarring even by today's standards. And that's only touching at the cusp of far more wilder age gaps that did exist back in our older history 😬. Especially ones originating from arranged royal marriages. If it helps add any levity, despite Snow White herself stating that she fancied the idea of marriage, she and the Prince don't actually get married proper by the end of the film. If anything, it actually leaves the audience to draw their own conclusions regarding what the two do after the story's conclusion. Outside of the "obvious" answer of course 😅. So an argument can be made whether or not the two waited for who knows how long until they eventually got married. If you want some further insight into this perspective, I recommend checking out Lindsay Ellis's video on her re-evaluation of The Little Mermaid where she briefly touches on this topic 😁.
@PanthersclawАй бұрын
@2gredvisions8560 That's fair. It's not that they went straight from him carrying her from the coffin straight to the wedding altar. They could have waited until she was a proper adult to marry. Normally, a 4 year age gap isn't too bad, but when it relates to a legal adult(or someone close to legal adulthood) and a minor, then it gets 😬 I'll check out Lindsay Ellis's video. Thanks for the recommendation. 😄

@vari.haitian the age difference is actually only like 4 years? Technically its legal because aurora is considered an adult in her time, and this is a very old tale that was probably written hundreds of years ago, back then it would’ve been acceptable. Although 20 and 16 is weird, they were literally betrothed/engaged at birth and it was only to reunite the two kingdoms. And aurora might as well be 18 or older and nothing would’ve changed, they probably just got lazy and didn’t bother to change the detail of her getting her curse being awakened when shes 16.
