Yes, it is. The Japanese word for it is horagai. Hou=the teachings of Buddha Ra=reverberating Gai=shell.

Not part of the ceremony/prayers. Many Asians wear masks if they have a cold, so they don't spread it to others. (I couldn't tell if he coughed after removing it or if that was someone else.) Also, the mountainous areas can be very dusty, so a mask is worn to prevent breathing in dust and other particles. This is very common in Korea as well with the Yellow Dust that comes out of China.
