People who argue that Murali was the goat spinner always miss how seldom Warne got to clean up the tail. What his stats would have looked like if he wasn't so often the anvil to McGrath's hammer to close the innings. Of course, McGrath was one of the best anvils ever himself to Lee and Dizzy with the new ball and to Warne on a spinning pitch. Such a dominant attack.

South African batting lineup was pretty solid for the most part, but on a given day you can count on it to collapse as spectacularly as Pakistani batting lineup. Which is why they are the men and you are little boys, that is exactly why they are the greatest cricketing nation ever by a huge mile and this team is the greatest of this century even Undertaker cannot have an unthinkable 34 matches unbeaten streak which this Australian side have in the main World Cup it will never be repeated again their dominance was something legendary and the fact is you may not like them because they trashed you and everyone but deep down you respect them because of their greatness and manliness they had an exceptional team and they wanted to do something with that team so the best possible way to do it is to dominate absolutely everyone in the biggest stages and to ensure total one sided victory and to do it over & over & over again that's why they had that much success...

This is the perfect example of why warne played more test than murali and have fewer wickets. Bowling in a pace friendly pitch and have to share his wickets with the greats like mcgrath, lee, gilespe etc. On the other hand, murali used to bowl in spin friendly wickets and he goes on and on. Wickets were made only for murali in srilanka. I have seen him many times he is bowling his 50th over. Warne didnt get that chance. Murali got 170+ wickets against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe at that time. Warne only had 9 as Australia didnt play test with these two teams.

When asked which of those would win, Viv Richards essentially put it that it depends on where you set the time machine. If playing in 1980, Viv reckoned WI would win. If playing in 2000, Viv reckoned Aus would win. :)
@TheJonkerr77 жыл бұрын
That's actually a really good point. The biggest thing the WI team would have to cope with if playing in the 2000's would have been minimum 90 overs per day and 2 bouncers only rule. Clive Lloyd and Viv knew how to manage their bowlers so they were constantly fresh only bowling around 65 to 80 overs per day and sometimes less if they needed to. Would make a big difference to sustaining their pressure I think if they had to bowl up to 90.
@exceltraining7 жыл бұрын
hmmmm...... i was 4 till 13 in the 70's.... my formative years for watching cricket...... I have to say that the 70s and 80s Windies team were just a bunch of thugs bowling fast bouncers. That's not cricket. Shane Warne's skills far eclipses that era of bowling - it had finesse, tactics and also strategy. He bowled batsmen out, rather than dismissing them because they were in fear of their life. The 70s and 80s Windies bowlers should be shameful of themselves and they know it.

This is why rules were changed - www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/136043.html "What revelation wrought this miracle? What new scientific insight goosed the ICC into preparing to abandon its recent chucking guidelines? The clincher, it turns out, was the news that a survey of the bowlers in the ICC Champions Trophy revealed that 99 per cent of all bowlers chucked. This isn't so different from earlier declarations that 90 per cent of all bowlers chuck, so the turnabout must have to do with the names named rather than the general conclusion. It turns out that under the current definition of a legitimate delivery, such pillars of the bowling establishment as Glenn McGrath, Shaun Pollock, and Jason Gillespie chuck. They straighten their arms in excess of the current 10-degree allowance for fast bowlers."

Statistically, over the last two years, India has been by far the best test team. Their W-D-L record is 20-5-2 with 8 straight series victories. But the only away series in that period was against those dismal WI & SL squad. It's an abomination that a cricketing powerhouse like India takes almost 3 years to play a test @ countries like SA, Aus, and Eng. I think BCCI has figured that every time they go on an extended tour of Aus, SA, NZ, and Eng, someone always loses their job, so they rather tour those countries as less frequently as possible.

In this particular game, Australia won by an innings and 360 runs. Martyn scored 133, Hayden 122, and the world's best ever WK-batsman Gilchrist an unbeaten 204 from just 213 balls. There was a reason this Australian team were so good. The people waiting in the wings in the Sheffield Shield competition at that time were potentially the second best team in the world. The time it took for Matthew Hayden to become a regular in the test team says it all. He had to contend with Mark Taylor, Michael Slater, Matthew Elliot to become the regular starter. The people who never got much of a chance but were incredibly good players at the time include Darren Lehman (eventual regular but not for long), Stuart Law, Michael Bevan, Martin Love, Jamie Siddons, Jamie Cox, Michael Di Venuto, Brad Hodge. That’s why that team were so good, they knew if they didn’t perform someone just as good would have replaced them.

Michael Bevan was a very average test player. Brad Hodge and Martin Love were unlucky not to have played more test cricket.

The late 90's to early 2000's Australian team is the greatest bunch that ever played the modern day game. They could hit any target and defend anything. Top notch!

it's nice to be reminded how exceptional that team was under waugh . they were next level .NOBODY could stand against their ability to maintain the pressure ,so the other team just fell apart .still remember the semi final of the world cup when they subjected the south african's to so much consistent pressure ,they couldn't think straight and totally lost the plot in the last over when zulu was clubbing them to the boundary.it was one of the GREAT ones. i remember the die hard SA fans crying because the disappointment was so great after being totally convinced they had it . but steve waugh asked the boys to go up another notch in pressure and the SA's just blew apart .steve has to be one of the greatest captains to play the game with his skill to lift the team and pull the absolute best out of them .

This Australian side was so dominant that it left opponents in the dust ... what made it even worse any opponent that was touring would have exhibitions matches against the state side who they would struggle to win but more likely loose = it shows the amount if talent the backups were knocking on the Australua team's door If you wanna see what i mean see ODi Australia vs Australia A... how Australia A were a better side than the msin Australian team

The Windies produced a string of great fast bowlers like they had a fast bowler factory somewhere between Barbados and Antigua. Astounding consistency. Then there was Viv Richards, who excelled at, well, _everything._

This is when Test cricket was exciting to watch. Even though I liked watching Australia bowl more because of Warnie, I still liked watching Australia bat, specially when Gilly was in. They nearly always had a good run rate batting and were exciting in the field
