This is the only song that shows what it's really like for a young person being misunderstood and attacked at all angles. He starts out just wanting time alone and then you literally hear the music fall apart and swirl up into a full mental breakdown. It's funny because my Mom also came into my room while i was staring at the ceiling and yelled at me for being on drugs when I was just tired from school.

First comment about it that I've seen. It's kind of unfortunate how most people's takeaway is "haha funney, he said a brand name". Now, I admit, the Pepsi bit is pretty (inevitably) humorous; but from a serious viewpoint, this is a great criticism of a universal experience, as well as ableism/sanism, being misunderstood, belittled, pathologized, and/or possibly abused.

*LYRICS* Sometimes I try to do things and it just doesn't work out the way I wanted too And I get real frustrated, and its like And I try hard to do it and take my time And it just doesn't work out the way I want it too It's like I concentrate on it real hard but it just doesn't work out And everything I do and everything I try, it never turns out It's like I need time to figure these things out But there's always someone there going Hey Mike: You know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately You know, maybe you get away, and like maybe you should talk about it, You'll feel a lot better And I go: No it's okay, you know I'll figure it out Just leave me alone I'll figure it out You know I'll just work it on myself, And they go: Well you know if you want to talk about it I'll be here, you know And you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it, so want don't you talk about it And I go: No I don't want to, I'm okay, I'll figure it out myself And they just keep bugging me and they just keep bugging me And it builds up inside So you're gonna be institutionalized You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes You won't have any say They'll brainwash you until you see their way I'm not crazy - institution You're the one who's crazy - institution You're driving me crazy - institution They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy - myself I was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about everything But then again I was thinking about nothing And then my mom came in and I didn't even know she was there she called my name And I didn't even hear it, and then she started screaming: MIKE! MIKE! And I go: What, what's the matter? And she goes: What's the matter with you? I go: There's nothing wrong mom And she goes: Don't tell me that, you're on drugs! And I go: No mom I'm not on drugs I'm okay, I was just thinking you know, Why don't you get me a Pepsi And she goes: No you're on drugs! I go: Mom I'm okay, I'm just thinking She goes: No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't act that way! I go: Mom just give me a Pepsi, please All I want is a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me Just a Pepsi They give you a white shirt with long sleeves Tied around you're back, you're treated like thieves Drug you up because they're lazy It's too much work to help a crazy I'm not crazy - institution You're the one who's crazy - institution You're driving me crazy - institution They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy - myself I was sitting in my room and my mom and my dad came in And they pulled up a chair and they sat down, they go: Mike, we need to talk to you And I go: Okay what's the matter They go: Me and your mom have been noticing lately that you've been having a lot of problems, You've been going off for no reason and we're afraid you're gonna hurt somebody, We're afraid you're gonna hurt yourself So we decided that it would be in your interest if we put you somewhere Where you could get the help that you need And I go: Wait, what are you talking about, we decided!? My best interest?! How do you know what's my best interest is? How can you say what my best interest is? What are you trying to say, I'm crazy? When I went to your schools, I went to your churches, I went to your institutional learning facilities?! So how can you say I'm crazy? They say they're gonna fix my brain Alleviate my suffering and my pain But by the time they fix my head Mentally I'll be dead I'm not crazy - institution You're the one who's crazy - institution You're driving me crazy - institution They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy - myself It doesn't matter, I'll probably get hit by a car anyway

Grew up listening to Suicidal. Ironically when my daughter was a teen going through her stuff, this song helped us to connect a few times. Music was one of the only ways I had to reach her, to tell her that I been there and will be there through it all. Even when I dont understand.

I resonated with this song as a teenager so much. My parents never took the time to hear me out, or ever really care about how I felt. They always just kicked me out, or chalked me up as a “troubled kid” when really a lot of what I was going through and the trauma I have was from them. This song perfectly expressed the anger and resentment I had towards the world at that time.

I think many people have had similar experiences with all sorts of bands, thats the beauty of music as an artform, it relays and retells peoples internal feelings and experiences, music is hearing someone's experience and hearing someone else feeling what your feeling is one of the most reassuring things on the planet when your dealing with things you dont know how to or just cant describe. or just a *vibe*, and knowing someone else sees it. and man does this song have a vibe. I always think about how awesome it is you can write something, maybe in the process of figuring yourself out or just because you feel the need, and decades later someone in the same spot can hear it and feel like they are not alone

LYRICS Sometimes I try to do things And it just doesn't work out the way I want it to And I get real frustrated And like, I try hard to do it And I like, take my time, but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to It's like I concentrate on it real hard But it just doesn't work out And everything I do and everything I try It never turns out It's like, I need time to figure these things out But there's always someone there going "Hey Mike, you know, we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately, you know? You should maybe get away And like, maybe you should talk about it, you'll feel a lot better" And I go, "No it's okay, you know, I'll figure it out Just leave me alone, I'll figure it out, you know? I'm just working on myself" They go, "Well you know, if you wanna talk about it, I'll be here, you know And you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it So why don't you talk about it?" I go, "No I don't want to, I'm okay, I'll figure it out myself" But they just keep bugging me They just keep bugging me and it builds up inside So you're gonna be institutionalized You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes You won't have any say They'll brainwash you until you see their way I'm not crazy (institutionalized) You're the one that's crazy (institutionalized) You're driving me crazy (institutionalized) They stick me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy, myself I was in my room And I was just like, staring at the walls thinking about everything But then again, I was thinking about nothing And then my mom came in, and I didn't even know she was there She called my name and I didn't hear her And then she started screaming, "Mike, Mike" And I go, "What? What's the matter?" She goes, "What's the matter with you?" I go, "There's nothing wrong, mom" She goes, "Don't tell me that, you're on drugs" I go, "No mom, I'm not on drugs, I'm okay, I'm just thinking, you know? Why don't you get me a Pepsi?" She goes, "No, you're on drugs" I go, "Mom, I'm okay, I'm just thinking" And she goes, "No, you're not thinking, you're on drugs Normal people don't act that way" I go, "Mom, just get me a Pepsi, please? All I want's a Pepsi" And she wouldn't give it to me All I wanted was a Pepsi Just one Pepsi And she wouldn't give it to me Just a Pepsi They give you a white shirt with long sleeves Tied around your back, you're treated like thieves Drug you up because they're lazy It's too much work to help a crazy I'm not crazy (institutionalized) You're the one that's crazy (institutionalized) You're driving me crazy (institutionalized) They stick me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy, myself I'm sitting in my room, and my mom and my dad came in They pulled up a chair and they sat down They go, "Mike, we need to talk to you" And I go, "Okay, what's the matter?" They go, "Me and your mom, we've been noticing lately you've been having a lot of problems And you've been going off for no reason And we're afraid you're gonna hurt somebody And we're afraid you're gonna hurt yourself So we decided that it would be in your best interest If we put you somewhere where you could get the help that you need" And I go, "Wait, what are you talking about? We decided? My best interest? How do you know what my best interest is? How can you say what my best interest is? What are you trying to say? I'm crazy? When I went to your schools I went to your churches I went to your institutional learning facilities So how can you say I'm crazy? They say they're gonna fix my brain Alleviate my suffering and my pain But by the time they fix my head Mentally, I'll be dead I'm not crazy (institutionalized) You're the one that's crazy (institutionalized) You're driving me crazy (institutionalized) They stick me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy, myself It doesn't matter, I'll probably get hit by a car anyway

I had nu metal for my teenage anger I felt back in the late 90s-early 2000s, but man oh MAN did this song encapsul how it was for me and my parents back then! From the church thing, wanting to seek therapy but being denied it, parents breaking my metal CDs because they thought it was "satanic" and making me "evil and depressed", etc.
@allouttabubblegum1984 Жыл бұрын
Hard music is therapeutic, it kept me from hurting myself and others. Even if it was "Satanic music", we still have the free will to decide if it will influence us detrimentally.
@Alexandria87 Жыл бұрын
@aofmual I’m aware of that lol. I’m just saying that Nu Metal also was an outlet for angry, young teens such as myself back in the prime of it who weren’t born around the time this song came out and bands like this in a way inspired bands after them to carry on the same message in a way to a new generation of teens back then.

Do you really want Trump to do more constitutional damage to your country's institutions [pun not intended] though? Since you're stuck with a two horse race, surely the only decent thing to do is to make sure the aspiring dictator fascist is stopped. If that means voting for Biden, maybe you just gotta compromise this time.

Me too. I was drugged a lot as a kid. Was so happy when I turned 18 and threw my pills away and told my psychiatrist to discharge me. My parents were so mad they called the cops and I said I'm 18. They have no legal authority to drug me anymore and I've never been okay with any of this. So the first chance I got I threw my pills out and refused to go get another prescription and now they're mad that this is the first choice I've made. They're shocked at how long I've wanted to do this. Tell them they have no right to force me to take drugs to put up with their f'd up drama. Cops said they didn't think it was the best choice but it's mine to make. Police told my parents I was a legal adult and could make my own decisions and couldn't be forced onto drugs anymore. School system said I couldn't attend public school if I was unmedicated cuz I was still finishing out my senior year when I was 18. I thought about legally fighting them on that but decided it was easier to lie to the school and tell them what they want to hear to make them shut up and then turn around and change nothing.

@@Gnomezonbacon Bravo! I'm proud of you buddy for seeing through the lies and sticking through it! It obviously takes a lot of courage and intelligence to say that what you were told growing up was bullshit. Most people unfortunately don't get to that point and they fully believe everything mainstream Psychiatry says is the bible. Despite in reality, it having very little scientific evidence or even proof of it working... More often arguably the opposite. It's just a form of control for those that, don't conform to the masses.

I first saw Suicidal Tendencies in 1982 at Dancing Waters in Long Beach. I think they were opening up for Bad Religion. I saw about 3 songs of their set before I had to get the fuck out of there. What I remember most was how horrible Suicidal was, how they looked and dressed like my older brothers (18st. gang members) how they couldn't even play their instruments, how the noise would drive us out of the club and into the parking lot til they were done. Then they were voted worst band in Flipside magazine, so they put out an Ad that said "new album coming out and you'll be sorry." Everybody was like 'whatever' but then the album dropped and it was a punk masterpiece; the whole Punk Rock Community was stunned. They could play their instruments, the guitars were shredding, the beat driving. Mike could command the stage, dance and prowl, sing and growl, could write about his anguish, his ideology, his perspective on the world and it was all so wonderfully poetic and angry. I never saw a band transform more than Suicidal in so short a time for the better.

@@8barbies779 Thx, I lost that account info but yeah I wrote that. I still remember how they were the opening band and played when no one was there, maybe 30 of us on the floor watching them. It was so confusing to everyone because no one knew who or what they were. I mean they look like fake homeboys but were playing what sounded like a punk band who hadn't learn to play their instruments. Someone said " Who are these Mexicans, another" They suck" Later alot of their followers- The Suis would show up to their shows and cause trouble. They'd fight with the LADS of Hollywood. I got jumped by a dozen if them in Culver City, claimed i was a LAD, i wasnt. Several years later i got my revenge when 2 of them- brothers, at a Descendents show in 1990 got mad at me because they said I was too rough in the Pit slam dancing. I beat up one of them and when the bouncers came, he fought them for some reason and they dragged him away, then a guy came over almost crying and said " Thats my brother" Of course I said something stupid to him and then we fought. Bouncers ended up roughing us up but I didn't care I got my revenge. Anyway back to the 82 show, when Bad Religion was still raw and Greg the singer was still menacing. They put on a great show. Oh yeah one of the early bands had a bucket of tiny frogs, might have been the Vandals, an he started throwing them at the crowd, they were all getting squished. Eventually the pit was all slimy and bloody with crushed frogs.Poor lil guys, It was wild back in those days. If you had long hair, you'd be called a hippie and get beaten up. Anyway I got a million stories from all the shows and riots I was at during the 80s.
