My wife and traveled around Portugal last November. I think Porto was our favorite overall stop. Maybe the best meal we had all trip was the lunch at Quinta de Marrocos in the Douro Valley. But DO NOT MISS the Pinhais Sardine Factory tour in Porto, even if you are skeptical about tinned fish. Also if you are driving around Porto or Gaia be very careful. We got our car lodged in a narrow side street and derailed our entire evening one night trying to get it extracted. Although it was a nightmare at least we did get to meet some of the real locals.

This Porto travel vlog is an absolute gem! The way you showcase each place is both captivating and informative, making me feel like I'm right there with you exploring this beautiful city. Porto indeed seems like a must-visit, with its art deco architecture and delightful attractions. 🇵🇹 The Douro Valley looks like a perfect day trip, and the quirky Harry Potter rumor adds a unique twist to the adventure. Can't wait to plan my own Porto trip, thanks to your wonderful insights! 🌟

For anyone considering visiting Porto, I recommend that you avoid Café Majestic, as it is a tourist trap. If you are interested in a historical art deco café, that has been restored and reopened to the decor that it had in the 1920's, try A Brasileira. Also expect it to be packed with people, although, the prices aren't anywhere the entrapment you'll encounter in Majestic. Another more afordable option, albeit a bit more recent, is confeitaria do Bolhão (not as high end as the other 2 options I mentioned, but an historical café, and a quite interesting one at that). In another part of the city, you might consider also Petulia, near in Rua Julio Dinis.

Thank you very much for your helpful video. My wife and I did 10 days in Porto and your advice was very helpful. We did the Douro Valley tour with your alternate recommendation and had a blast. We bought the Porto Card and Adante travel card for 3 days. This was a no brainer for us. We checked out the museums that it got us in for free and used it for the discounts elsewhere. The Adante card was really helpful. We stayed a bit north of the main tourist area and had a Metro stop that was 5 minutes from our hotel so we again got our monies worth. One thing that I didn't follow was either your channel or another said to scan the card at the end of the ride. I didn't see others scanning their cards so we didn't. It didn't appear to make a difference. Again, thank you for your video and document.

Great video! I went to Porto last week and really liked it, but I have to say, it felt soooo heavily populated by tourists which made it difficult to see most attractions as the queues were either ridiculously long or all the tickets were all sold out. About the JK Rowling / Lello thing: years ago, the bookstore had a whole section dedicated to Harry Potter and would advertise it heavily. Rumour has it they never paid royalties though, so once they were pressed for it and negotiations failed, Rowling publicly disavowed them and they completely removed that section and any mention of Harry Potter from all of their media. Rowling for sure knew the bookstore (trust me, when you live in Porto it's impossible not to, unless you're a newborn). Now, to say it inspired locations in the books is something else, but there's probably a lot to this story that we don't know.
@SuitcaseMonkey
@SuitcaseMonkey Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’m sure you’re right. I can see it possible though, that in the mid 90s when she was there, before the internet and such, it would be possible to not have visited. There’s a bunch of places I haven’t been to in London and if the internet didn’t exist I would be less informed about them. So it’s possible. But I know what you mean.
@lucashungaro
@lucashungaro Жыл бұрын
@@SuitcaseMonkey Good point, I failed to consider that! But yeah, something happened a few years ago that caused them to remove all references to HP, and right around that same time Rowling made the post. Not taking sides of course, as both Rowling and the bookstore are in it for the money, and it surely helps the store a lot to be associated with HP. Still, it's an amazing place! Shame it's always packed with people. Anyway, congrats on the video, it's a great showcase for the city! Oh, and next time try the Francesinha at Santiago or Lado B. From the looks of it you went to Brasão, which has a good Francesinha, but not as good as these two. :)

But the thing with that story is--and I hope I don't come across as contentious and antagonistic here, because I know it's not " your" story--is that it's just one "rumour-has-it" tale trotted out to replace a previous one that got deflated. Occam's Razor is in effect here, as I think the simplest explanation here is the most plausible: She made that tweet and then Lello ramped down its promotion of its dubious ties to Rowling as a response. (And, to be frank, I'm still quite sceptical of the claim that there was some immediate diminishment in their promotion of their connection to Rowling which corresponds to the tweet. Again, that sounds like story time, and that's only reinforced by the fact that, legally, royalties would not have to be paid to her for such a vague claim.) Rowling is feisty and persistent, especially when it comes to protecting her carefully-maintained brand, and she was quite capable of bringing negative attention to the bookstore had their been any escalation to that minor Twitter drama. I'll also note that it is wholly plausible, and actually quite likely, that she never visited, nor even heard of Lello, in her two years in Porto. Historicization is necessary here: While it seems unbelievable at this time that a resident would have never heard of this bookstore, what with all the hullabaloo about it and the lines for it winding all the way down to Aliados, Porto has only very recently turned into the Disneyland it is today. Lello in the nineties was, believe it or not, a rather quaint and sleepy bookstore, one that was certainly well known to some natives and an admixture of bibliophiles, but one that was unknown to significant number of residents, especially someone like Rowling, who lived in Rua do Duque de Saldanha, exactly two kilometres from Lello, in a pre-Metro era of lower mobility when people's radius of experience was far more circumscribed. And I can actually attest to this: despite the fact that in a previous life (i.e., a few decades ago) I was professor of literature and, of course, a booklover, and despite the fact the I lived in the early 00's in Loios, one block away from Lello, I only heard about the bookstore in my third year in that small neighbourhood, and then only because a friend visiting from abroad passed by it and took an interest in it. After that, I visited the place a few times and never once entered the shop when there were more than three or four other patrons. I understand the business perspective in Porto promoting its ties to JK Rowling, but most are specious, don't stand up to even slight scrutiny, and often rely on painfully literally-minded connection-making. (A random fountain features a griffin; therefore, that must be what inspired House Gryffindor---never mind that the house's emblem is a mere lion.) Note that I say "most" here, because, yes, even though JK wasn't too fond of her time in Porto--that's an entirely different post--things did rub off on her. She has confirmed, for instance, that the cloaks worn by Porto uni students, themselves modelled after Coimbra attire, did in fact inspire the Hogwarts dress code. Maybe it appears that I doth protest too much, but I have a pretty invested reason why some of this misguided mythology irks me. Just one insight: My former boss has been cited multiple times as the definite inspiration for Professor Dumbledore. At first it was mentioned as a mere possibility; over time, though, and as these things go, that notion has ossified into established fact. I mean, just look at this picture of him posted in a "Here's What Inspired Rowling" article in a local paper! If you squint, does he not look like he could pass for an elderly, wizened professor? Well, yeah, I guess? But, maybe, you know, don't put your finger on the scale and instead be honest by selecting an image that's contemporaneous with Rowling's tenure in Porto, not one from a few years ago? Because, you know, on the day that she left this city--in quite a rush and quite unhappily, I should say--that guy was in his early forties. And because I have a lot of ties to her, I get very, very frequent inquiries from media outlets and biographers (mostly of the tawdry variety) for interviews. All of them, without exception, are interested in myth, not facts. Because, really, there's not much of a story with the latter. Rowling's a writer. Perhaps not Saramago-level, but she does have an imagination, and that's something that can't be ascertained and quantified by people on the outside-looking-in, though that fact doesn't seem to deter them. Although a lot of what she dreamt up for the HP books are undoubtedly composites of countless personal experiences, she's quite capable of coming up with characters, places, and events without having to rely on the 1:1 cognates that other people, in their desire for a more graspable (i.e. simplified) narrative, unimaginatively default to. (e.g., Why would she need a single reference point for Dumbledore? The wizened, wise old Gandalf/Obi-Wan/etc. mentor is the oldest trope in storytelling.) But that will never stop them from trying, because they need their stories too.

Hmm. Interesting. I would say that if you want different experiences I wouldn’t do Lisbon and Porto as they are similar. From an ease POV Lisbon is probably easier/cheaper to get to from most places. We personally preferred Porto but Lisbon is great too. If you want diversity stick Madeira on there as number two. If you want two cities then Barcelona is different enough to be a great companion. @@SuitcaseMonkey Thanks. Two more questions please. How you record sound and what editing software you use.

sound is just recorded straight from the iPhone when on holiday. To do the voice over I use a Shure MV5 and pop shield. I edit with FCP. For editing I have done a whole video on my second Carry on Monkey channel about how I edit videos.

When you say things like "Not too expensive" to describe a room or meal, specifics would be helpful. That room looks like it's $400 a night.

Hey. Yeah recent videos I’ve been putting prices on them. But sometimes I shy away as they change so much through the year and depending on what country you’re booking from so it’s just easier to link the hotels you can see for your own dates which only take a few seconds to check. But yeah fair enough

Haha no worries. If you tap the thumbs up, I believe it changes it to up and cancels the down. I appreciate your honesty!

If space was unlimited I’m with you. But going to 4k was a bigger priority. If it makes you feel any better you’re probably the only person to have noticed 😂 so congrats!

@@SuitcaseMonkey yeah, i like 60 FPS videos. I can understand space needs for it 😄. 4K looks beautiful. By the way, i like your videography & especially narration in background when you talk about the places
