Both Syleiman and Hurrem knew that who would be sent in manisa would be dead, but they did not relise that nurbanu would have such an impact over selims game of survival. If you followed the series and history better, then you would know that Prince Mustafa adored his brothers and sister and would never kill them! Even the witch Mihrimah received with open arms without realizing that she had come to start his end! The choice of Selim as the successor was exclusively Hurrem's wish because after the death of Mehmet Selim was her puppet! She wanted to rule the Empire through him, which she wouldn't have been able to do if Bayazid had become sultan! But she was punished for all her misdeeds, and most of all for the death of the most powerful prince in such a way that she did not rule the Empire!

When Mehmet was alive, he is the bet of the Suleiman to be his heir. When Mehmet died Hurrem, Mihrimah and Rustem bet for for Bayezid. But Suleiman choose Selim as heir, why? He is the least harmful to the empire. Mustafa has potentials and strong supporters but impatient, decide on his own, rule by emotions. Bayezid is envious, impatient, rebellious, according to the sultan these behaviors will not only destroy himself but the empire and the country as well. When the Sultan choose Selim, Hurrem waived Bayezid and support Suleiman's chosen heir with the reasons that Selim as drunkard according to the sultan only destroy himself. Hurrem's reasons no one will interest to attack Selim because he is patient and cool blooded person, lesser enemies. This was proven when he became sultan, had stable peace among neighboring countries during his reign, and conquered Cyprus with Sokullo as his vizier.

Like all parents he loves them all for different reasons. Noone is above the other necessarily. Noone wants to intentionally harm their child's heart but tough decisions have to be made and ultimately only he knows why he chose it really. Mustafa would most likely take not being chosen the hardest and his ability to handle the disappointment the worst. He's the obvious choice as the oldest with most experience in theory.

@@jennmarin2862 Suleiman chose Selim over Mustafa the same way he chose Hurrem to be the Haseki over Mahidevran / Gulfem. But I expected him to more fair with the choice of his heir. In the past Suleiman needn’t have sent Mahidevran & Mustafa on Sanjak, when Mustafa was a young kid. When Mustafa stood up for his Mom & asked his Dad - why is my Mom crying all the time ? What wrong did she do ? Why is she the only one in the palace who is crying ? All Suleiman needed to do was - give Mahidevran - one night per week or atleast one night every two weeks. Instead he chose to send Mustafa & Mahidevran away on Sanjak. Surely his increased time - spent with Hurrems sons would have made an impact on the decision of choosing his Heir.

Had Mehmet lived ; he was a good combination of all the princes good qualities. He did make mistakes ( as they all did ) but he was a well rounded prince. He was I believe the one Suleiman wished would have succeeded him. But his life was cut short. And Mahidrivran paid the price of her sin by her precious only son being killed later on. I think Mustafa and Mehmet would have worked together. Mehmet loved his brother, and Mustafa had the closest relationship with him. But where Mehmet defied his mother Hurrem and protected Mustafa ( even almost killing himself being shot by an arrow for him ) and loved him enough to defy her opinion of his brother; Mustafa closed his eyes a lot to the horrible things his mother wanted/did. He knew his mother would order his siblings killed the minute Suleiman died. ( Shown back when Suleiman passed out when Changir was an infant ) He did nothing. He denied knowing, but he knew why his siblings were summoned away by his grandmother. Mustafa's weakness was how much he abided by his mother's will, even when he knew she was in the wrong. Suleiman was right to not have chosen him as the crowned Prince. Mind you, in the end it didn't matter because Selim ends up the last living son.

But I think it is true that both Hurrem and Mahidrivran tried to have each other's son's assassinated. I doubt Mahidrivran just stayed silent while her son was put to the side and Hurrems were shown favor. Technically, Mustafa was not Suleiman's eldest son. He was the third, but the other two died young.

Honestly, there's a lot of efforts to smear his name, but, outside of his drinking, all Selim did was exactly what any of the other şehzades would have had to do after inheriting the throne. Lengthy military campaigns were no longer welcome as it would exhaust the treasury while upsetting all the peace treatments that had been put in place under Suleiman's reign. Add to that how short his reign is, limiting what we have to analyze, and he's worth a closer look.

Because Bayezid is considered a strong candidate to the throne, unlike Selim who everyone pretty much overlooks. She felt it safer to send him there so that her enemies would feel like a weak Sehzade is in Manisa and therefore is less of a threat to Mustafa (unlike Mehmet) and that would save both Selim's life and Bayezid's since he wouldn't be on the "throne province".

The moment a sultan of seven continents love his wife so much she will be the one always in his mind, sons will be 2nd place in his heart. Whatever his love says will be the one greatly influencing his decision. Mustafa is the son of the one he hates and ignores, why would he choose the offspring of that person over the offspring of his love. It's kind of dumb that they decided one specific city or province was where the heir was decided. Just because the city and province were close to the capital doesn't mean the prince assigned to govern it is competent. As proven by Selim, who was the most incompetent of all his brothers. The heir should be decided on who is the best suited for the throne. Even if their province was the furthest one from the capital, if the prince was the best suited for the throne, then choose him. After Mehmet died, Mustafa should of been reinstated as heir because he was best suited. And him ruling the province that bordered Persia, a powerful enemy, should reinforce that.

Mustapha wasn’t a good choice because he allowed the Janissaries to threaten his brother, Mehmed the best choice because he sacrificed his life for Mustapha which showed Sultan that he would not have killed his brothers. People saying whoever became sultan would kill the siblings are not 100%. The law allowed them to make that choise if for the stability of the empire and most of their officials would advise the sultan in to doing it, however the choise is completely his. Had Mustapha become sultan the likelihood of him having to do something like that werelow as the other princes were never a threat to him due to his wide range of supporters. The only way would be for him to not have sons but he did so.. Suleyman basically ruined everything with his choise and killed all his son but one.

Mustafa would have been the right candidate for the throne being the first born son and also he was wise and fair to others that would make him a very powerful man that is also well liked. if Mustafa were to come in power, his personality would have probably made him abolish the tradition of killing brothers much earlier. However, Suleiman was really an incredibly stupid man who happened to come into power when times are good. As they all say, good times create weak and stupid men. Mustafa was disobedient for the right reasons as it can be seen throughout the series that he disagrees with the politics in place and only following them grudgingly. Putting an excelling follower in place would just spell disaster in the future as they aren't able to change with the times. After suleiman, the empire slowly but inevitably went into decline.

The real Mustafa was very different than this fictional one. His actual behavior was very telling, he was arrogant, headstrong, entitled, and impatient and unwilling to wait his turn for the the throne and actually did commit treason (it was with the Venetians and had nothing to do with the Persians; Google it.) He would have indeed killed his brothers, and that rule would not have and did not change for centuries. Mustafa being oldest had nothing to do with access to the throne, that wasn't how it worked. All sons were equal.

No empire lasts forever. Even if Hurrem was never in the picture the Ottoman Empire was destined to fall. At this point in time Spain and Britain were already setting up colonies in the New World. They were speedrunning against each other to become the world's first superpowers. The fact is the Ottomans never would of managed to get past Italy to conquer Europe as the Spanish and British were just too powerful. Not to mention the Vatican managed to rally all of Europe to put aside petty grievances to work together to contain the Ottomans. Who would you chose, the one who is loyal to you, or one of three banded together against you?
