In real life, that's pretty much exactly what happened. The show makes a bit of a mess out of the timeline, but, historically, it was the death of Hafsa, which allowed Hürrem to be freed, married to Suleiman, and created as the first Haseki Sultan to take over the position of the Valide Sultan.
