Explore the haunting tale of the Sultana, a steamboat disaster deadlier than the Titanic. In this video, we delve into the tragic events of April 27, 1865, when the Sultana exploded and sank in the Mississippi River, claiming the lives of 1,167 people. Uncover the story of a vessel designed for the lower Mississippi cotton trade, its role during the Civil War, and the fateful decision to overcrowd it with released Union prisoners of war.
Discover the details of the catastrophic explosion, the chaos that ensued, and the aftermath of the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history. Join us as we investigate the causes behind the Sultana disaster, examining the mismanagement of water levels, boiler construction, and the role of key individuals like Captain Reuben Benton Hatch.
Despite the magnitude of the tragedy, explore why no one was held accountable, the subsequent investigations, and the lasting impact on the survivors. Compare the Sultana disaster to the more well-known Titanic, and understand why this lesser-known maritime catastrophe deserves its place in history.
Subscribe for more gripping historical narratives and join us on this journey to uncover the secrets of the Sultana, a shipwreck deadlier than the Titanic.

Although a few facts are incorrect, overall a good presentation of America's worst maritime disaster! You are keeping the story alive, which was the goal of all the Union survivors until the last one passed away in 1941. That's now the objective of the Association of Sultana Descendants and Friends, an organization I started in 1988, which now has hundreds of members nationwide. In a couple of years, there will be a state-of-the-art Sultana Disaster Museum in Marion, Arkansas, a small town near the final resting site of the Sultana, now many feet underground. Norman Shaw

There wasn't only a day or two in between Lincoln's and Booth's death. 11 days.

OK, so maybe not deadlier than the Titanic... But this is a frickin' river steamboat! The fact that this small vessel is among the top peace time maritime disasters in history is astonishing.

I don't think the titanic would be considered a US shipwreck. It was UK flagged and sunk in international waters.

I suppose you could say Captain Mason held himself accountable... by dying as a result of his bad judgement.

1500 died on the Titanic, so not deadlier than the Titanic.

The titanic was a UK flagged ship and it sunk in international waters. I'm not sure how it would qualify as a "US shipwreck".
