I know that many have already told you, but I have specialized in the Dire Straits sound for just over two decades, not only in playing, but in recognizing the sound structures that come out of Mark Knopfler's guitar, you really managed to decipher the secrets of technique and the sound of the master's guitar, he did it like no other, this is an incredible, admirable feat. You have my admiration and respect, I have learned a lot from your videos, you don't know the extent of your generosity in sharing your knowledge with the world. Gratitude!

As a self taught guitarist from the 80’s I sincerely hope people learning from this don’t just think you showed the slow version for fretboard position or picking/strumming technique. If your learning from this, the accuracy at slow speed is a prerequisite to playing it ANY quicker. If you can’t play it slow you sure as hell ain’t playing it quick. Learning to play any instrument WELL is a long game, be patient, don’t beat yourself up, have a “It won’t beat me attitude” , put the hours in and you’ll get there. Best of luck 👍 Thanks Dylan Guitar for sharing your hard earned skills.

Hands down, the best rendition I've heard of this song, and even more impressive, is the exhaustilingy comprehensive breakdown of techniques shown here. I think you might have just ensured Knopfler's style can live on for another handful of generations, my friend. As a fellow guitar player and admirer of Mark's playing I would like to say thanks for this wonderful effort!

Hey Dylan, any additional advice (other than patience and practice) you offer to work on the thumb and pointer finger alternating technique used in the last solo? Something that maybe helped you get that down as cleanly as you have? Specifically in 5:37 and 5:56? I’ve learned and use my thumb, pointer, and middle fingers, works decently, your method is obviously cleaner, and I’d like to carry this technique over to your Lady Writer intro technique also.
@dylanguitar043 ай бұрын
Hmmm, if you watch Mark during live performances and try to replicate his hand that might help. Once I started anchoring my ring and pinky finger down things become a lot easier.
@mijoperkovic807410 ай бұрын
Dylan I have quick question: I see you are using only T plus first two fingers just like Mark Knopfler, should some who is learning this style of music and is inspired by MK ditch ring finger at the begining immediately and copy MK or use ring finger and then adapt when needed? Thanks
@dylanguitar0410 ай бұрын
If you want to imitate Knopfler and get the closest sound possible it would help to have a similar technique. If you are already comfortable with your ring finger it’s probably not necessary to change your technique since there is more you can do.

Hey I had a question after seeing all those videos and shorts... how do you make your "finger down" sound? Like, how do you make it sound so clear when you just hit the strings down, like 1:35 or 1:37 ? Everytime I try, it doesn't sound that clear!
@dylanguitar043 ай бұрын
I hate to say it but you just have to do it a thousand times until it sounds good and it becomes natural!

I have a technical question about the rhythm beat of the Sultans song. Do you only strike one string downwards with your thumb or do you strike multiple strings and use your index finger at the same time?
@dylanguitar0410 ай бұрын
I do both. There are instances where it sounds like Mark using his index across all the strings. For example, when the song starts It sounds to me like the first strike is the thumb with the index strumming the rest.
@rednail617410 ай бұрын
It seems like a simple rhythm, but it takes me a long time to play it automatically. Great that you take the time to answer your fans questions. You are a fantastic player and your videos are great.
@rednail617410 ай бұрын
Am I right when I hear that in the rhythm the thumb does not come on the 1st beat, but the upstroke of the index finger? Its not what I would expect.
@dylanguitar0410 ай бұрын
@@rednail6174 I think on the first beat it is a downbeat rake with the fingers replacing the thumb.
@rednail617410 ай бұрын
I think I know now what caused my confusion. I practiced the rhythm using your video "Sultans of Swing Techniques Slowed Down - Compilation". In this video the first beat is not visible. I can hear a soft click. Now I have watched also your video "Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live) - Dire Straits - Full Cover". In this video the first beat is indeed a downstroke. I see exactly what you meant. Very beautifully played.

You do know Mark Knopfler’s collection of 120 guitars is being auctioned at Christies in London on January 24th 2024. There’s a red Strat with an estimate of £6k, which sounds like a bargain.

@@bpw8139 The red Strats are of the series production signature edition that MK liked to give to collaborators and friends. The valuable ones will be the brown wood non-Fender instruments used for ‘On Every Street’ and solo work.
@bpw81399 ай бұрын
@@chrishb7074 Yes but even though they are not expensive guitars to begin with, the fact that MK has used them will double or triple their price. For example MKs sunburst schecter strat would usually sell for about 3-4K today. However his personal one that he put up for auction 20 years ago, sold for about 50K.
