In this episode, we take a look at the band's 5th studio record, Screaming Bloody Murder. This record saw the band return to a heavier sound, but with a bit of a gothic touch. Is this record a rebound from the previous poppy release? Or is it murder on the ears? Let's take a look.

I’m of the opinion that SBM is one of the most underrated albums of all time. Front to back this album is great.

This album is a decisive one and I can see why. It’s extremely unhinged and unstable, being completely all over the place and not clean in the slightest…..and that’s why I love it. These songs clearly convey the emotions and whether it’s rage or sadness, this album delivered for me. The last minute addition songs honestly are my least favorites as they feel out of place. My favorite song from this record is actually back where I belong to be honest. I think this album is in their top 3 best along with Chuck and infected

Welcome back. 😄 Finally we come to the really good stuff from Sum 41. Sadly we dont share the same opinion about most of the tracks and the Album 😃 And because its one of my Favourites, i just have to defend my child....i mean Album... a little bit😂: - The Drums/Riff from reason to believe sounds like the Terminator Theme (and it appears in "With Me" as a Acoustic Guitar. As a Terminator Fan i was so hyped when i heard it the first time😂 - in my opinion the SBM Solo is one of their best. I'm surprised you dont like it😳 - i'm really shocked you dont like Jessica Kill 😄 Its my Favourite Track on the Album. I really love that shredding bridge at the end, Derycks vocals and his Screams. I love the Guitar (Rhythm) in the Chorus. - What am i to say. I see we have different Opinions about Solos. I love that dark sounding Solo. Its short, but sweet. Atleast for me^^ - Holy Image of lies. For me the second half is when the Song gets GREAT. I love epic sounding movie Soundtracks and the second half sounds like it could be written for an movie. The Dark road out of hell is like a movie: 1. In Holy Image of lies. Deryck tells us about his Depression and his fears. 2. Sick of everyone. He is so deep in his Depression and it makes him angry. So relatable for me. 3. Happiness Machine. The Finale & the Happy end. It gets better for him.(atleast for now.....) As a Person who struggles with Depression and other problems in life. these 3 Songs are very special. The Lyrics are fantastic and could be written for me. I even made Music videos (with me in it) for holy image of lies and sick of everyone 😄 i'm still waiting for good times so i can make a Video for Happiness Machine... - Blood in my Eyes. One of Sum 41 best Songs for me. Now i just come to the conclusion that we just have a different taste in terms of Sum 41 Music or Music in general😃 For Fans of fun punky songs with fast and crazy Solos SBM is probably disappointing. But SBM gives me the things i want from Songs & Albums: A overall Theme, Emotion, relatable Lyrics, creative/different Song structure, agression, Heaviness. Its not a perfect Album, but in my opinion a really good Album. at the time it was my Favourite. But i respect your opinion. Even if your opinion about this Album is not very positiv^^ Thanks for the hard work. Must be exhausting to make these long Videos every month x.x

Hey dude, good to hear from you again. I knew you were a big fan of this record, so I was curious to see what you would say about this episode. And it seems you had a lot to say ha. So allow me to respond to a few of your points. 1. I'm surprised I didn't realize the Reason to Believe drums sound like Terminator. Now that it's been pointed out, I feel kinda dumb for not seeing the obvious similarity ha. 2. I'm kinda surprised how much you like the soloing on this record. I also like dark sounding solos & riffs, but a majority of these solos just felt so underwhelming to me. Especially compared to some of the solos on the following records. 3. I think that's cool that you made music videos for the Dark Road out of Hell songs. I wonder what they look like ha. And while I can't necessarily relate to their lyrics myself, I respect that they mean something to you. For me, Some Say is a Sum 41 song I can relate to and that means something to me. And also Pieces to a lesser degree. 4. I'd agree that we seem to have different tastes in terms of Sum 41, but it might not be as different as you think. Although I have a love for the punkier side of the band, I also love their aggressive side. Particularly when they mix punk and metal sensibilities. (i.e. No Brains, No Reason) I also like a good sense of emotion and dramatics from to time to time as well. (Growing up on alternative metal like Linkin Park and Three Days Grace, you develop a taste for it ha.) And I also like songs with interesting progressions and musical layers. (i.e. Walking Disaster, 88) So we like some of the same musical qualities, but I think what it comes down to is the execution. There were good and interesting ideas here, like I'd love to see Sum 41 try another multi part song. But I don't think these ideas were as fully realized as they could have been, since Deryck was intentionally taking a less polished approach with SBM. That's what I feel really hurt this record. I think my 13 Voices video might help explain my opinion of this album a little better. And likewise, I respect your opinion and as always appreciate your continued viewership. And yeah at times these videos can be a pain to make, particularly the last two ha. But I'm glad I decided to do this series, and I've received a lot of positive feedback from it. I'm proud of how far I've gotten into the discography and I'm glad others are getting enjoyment out of these videos.

@@andhedrewbees you can find my sick of everyone Music Video on my Channel. I made the Video in 2012. But i dont want to show my holy image of lies Video^^ its very melodramatic and embarrassing😂 About the Solos. I like Solos, but i dont need them. I like the short one in "what am i to say" cause it gives certain feeling that i cant really explain. I just love the sound. But i agree that the Solo or Bridge in Happiness Machine could be much better. I personally like the execution in most of the Songs. But i understand its not for everyone. I have a love and hate Relationship with Reason to believe. It starts so heavy and big, but then it turned into a mediocre Punk Rock Song and it ends with a beautiful sounding ballade. Its so weird. Thats the only Song where i dislike the Structure. What i love about the Album is that it Sounds raw. I remember my reaction from 2011 when i heard it the first time. My reaction was something like "its sounds almost as if they recorded it live, it sounds very spontaneous". i like that. In the end we are all Sum 41 for different reason. I'm 100% sure you will like the next two Albums more than UH & SBM 😃

Being a sum 41 fan on that period was an all time low, I remember it as a really bad time, the album took a LONG time to be out, the only updates were Deryck and the rest drinking and being "rockstars", the album sold poorly, the presentations were average at best, I still remember seeing the show at MTV Winter streaming live in Spain, just terrible. Then the documental, the SBM video that never came, Blood In My Eyes appearing out of nowhere with a video and a grammy nomination even the band didn't knew. The marketing was so bad and the label just dropped them. The album itself has really good songs, but all the problems are because of the lack of production (disguised as "live feel"), they should have stuck with Gil Norton, maybe what album would have come out with someone giving an outside perspective!

Might be controversial, but I'd say that SMB is the last OG Sum 41 album to date. It's messy, raw, IDGAF-attitude like, identifiable piece of music and it's definitely something that only Sum 41 would've composed. And by god, as a mere fan, I really enjoy it. The later albums, while being superior in overall quality (I suppose?), just don't feel as authentic. Heck, I would never guess if a new song belongs to 13 Voices or Order In Decline.

Wow, very impressive video, clearly you put a lot of effort into it and it really shows! As for the rating, I disagree on quite a lot of it, but that's fine, taste in music differs, that's what's great about it. SBM has probably grown into my favorite Sum 41 album (at the time at least, things like favorite albums/songs ALWAYS change for me). But again, very enjoyable video and I greatly appreciate the effort put into it, now time to check out some of your other reviews!

Wow, I'm in another video! Um, yeah I disagree on pretty much all of this, BUT I understand why you feel the way you do and can't wait to hear your thoughts on 13 Voices! Mostly the songs that mean the most to me (Breaking the Chain, 13 Voices, and Twisted By Design) and of course, the song that makes me think of Marilyn Manson in terms of style, There Will Be Blood.

Yeah, you're now a part of Sum 41 retrospective history ha. Thanks again for you're comment, that AFI comparison was certainly uncanny. It seems that I've got the unpopular opinion on SBM, at least to those watching this video. But that's cool, seeing the more postive opinions of SBM is interesting and insightful. Maybe my opinion on 13 Voices will be more favourable ha.

Great video man agreed with a lot, but not all. I think of Underclass and SBM similar, the 2 worst sum albums but each have some of their best songs. Walking Disaster and Screaming Bloody Murder are both top 5 Sum 41 songs imo. -Dark Road out of Hell isn't perfect, but is really good. I also find Happiness Machine to be the highlight of the 3. The brief pause after the bridge and before the final chorus gave me goosebumps the first couple times I heard it. -Blood In My Eyes is actually one of my favorites on the album. I find the chorus catchy and the vocals to be hard-hitting similar to SBM's (title track) chorus. -Time For You To Go and Baby You Don't Wanna Know are almost always skipped by me. They're just boring lol -The 2 ballads are okay, but don't compete with other Sum 41 ballads. (Never There is the best ballad they've done imo, looking forward to the OID episode to hear your thoughts on that) -Off topic, but I enjoyed the spongebob references 13 Voices is my second favorite album from Sum 41 behind Chuck so I'm looking forward to the end of the month. Cheers.

Hey dude, glad to hear from you again. We definitely have some overlapping opinions, which makes me happy that someone agrees with me about this record ha. (at least to some degree) Baby you don't wanna know is definitely an oddity, but it was one of a few songs on this record I played a lot when working on this episode. I just dig it's swing and classic rock groove. (great chorus too) Also I'm glad someone enjoys my references/attempts at humor ha.

I remember the first time I heard that Time For You To Go and Baby You Don't Wanna Know were both last-minute additions written on the same day and just thinking 'Yeah, you can tell!' I don't think either are necessarily bad, but they are way too similar too each other to warrant keeping both on the album I always likened the Reason To Believe drumbeat to the drums in the Terminator theme tune; in fact I'd always assumed it was something of a deliberate Terminator homage, referencing a darker and more violent movie to foreshadow the darker overall tone of the album - Whether that's true or just my own speculation, I think it's a simple enough beat that it probably wasn't directly taken from AFI, put this one down to a case of parallel thinking Gotta hard disagree on what you said about Blood In My Eyes though, that chorus absolutely SLAPS, it's one I can just imagine screaming along to in the crowd at a Sum show. One of my absolute favourites off Screaming Bloody Murder, and from Sum 41 in general When I first heard it I really didn't like this album - for a lot of the reasons you mentioned, inconsistent styles within each song etc.- plus at that time I much preferred the pure pop-punk AKNF sound. That said, after repeat listens and getting more into Sum 41 generally, this one really has grown on me, it's just got a really cool atmosphere to it, definitely a great Sum record.

Funnily enough, I think I had the opposite progression that you had towards this record. When I first heard it, I was deep into Alternative Metal and I loved the record's dark gloomier sound and it's sense of grandure. But as I got older and began relistening to the Sum 41 discography for these retrospective videos, I found myself finding a new appreciation for the more pop punk style material of All Killer and Underclass Hero. I definitely liked them before, but I payed more attention to the songwriting of those albums, and liked their attention to detail. Even though some of those songs had their own problems, specifically on Underclass. In contrast, when relistening to SBM and paying more attention to the writing, I was turned off by some of the choices they made and didn't connect with it the same way I did before. But hey, It's cool to hear different opinions and to compare and contrast. Also, sorry if my responses to your comments seem so infrequent. I do see them and appreciate them. I just keep forgetting to respond ha.

@@andhedrewbees ah no worries dude! Loving the series btw. Yeah it’s interesting how opinions on albums can change over time; like when I first got into music I wasn’t interested in anything remotely heavy, but now I eat that shit up lol. Still do love the pop-punk sound though, so I’m stoked for Heaven And Hell, which in theory seems to be promising the best of both worlds visa vi that But regardless of specific opinions on albums, I think we can all agree that Sum 41 absolutely rock!
